VIP Sample video 2 of 20: Clarity, Precision, and Shaping in Beethoven Sonata Op.2 No.1, 1st movement Dear friends - awhile ago, I published a post stating that I would provide samples for each of you of the VIP MasterClass Series videos that were 6 months old and older. I've fallen a bit behind in honoring that request, so over the coming weeks I'll be uploading the remainder of the 2017 VIP MasterClass Series samples (just so you know that I’m not bombing you with advertising this series out of the blue…just trying to catch up :) ). I know many people have expressed that they cannot afford to subscribe to the series full-time, but would be interested in purchasing individual full-length videos. Thank you Josh- because of your steadfast video production and your insight, I'm feeling more confident than ever. I just wanted to say thanks.. after 4 months of self-teaching, I can play the coda to Chopin's Ballade no.1, his Nocturne in C# minor (Op. post), and almost all of his Etude Op. 10 No. 12. I know it's a little off-topic, but I just wanted to tell you of my gratitude.

Arrau is the best Beethoven pianist by far.

Because he's a disciple of Martin Krause who was taught by Liszt, who was taught by Czerny who was a student of Beethoven. So, the acquired taste of the composer will be tremendous. And I also prefer Schnabel.

Barenboim sounds good, but most professors wont go for his pedaling.

Friedrich Gulda is absolutely essential listening and, for me, unrivaled in the opus 2 sonatas - as well as most of the later Sonatas. Barenboim is very mannered - copy and paste rubatos and as Horowitz would say, confuses musicality with musical effects etc. Gulda is refreshingly true to the score and adds all the drive and intensity that is Beethoven.
