Explore the fascinating evolution of Clark Air Base, originally envisioned in 1903 by the United States Army Air Service, into a dynamic hub blending aerial dominance and economic resurgence. From its pivotal role in World War II and the Cold War to the catastrophic closure triggered by Mount Pinatubo's eruption in 1991, witness the resilience and transformation of Clark Air Base. Its post-closure revival as the Clark Freeport Zone, marked by a $64 million resort and economic revitalization, reflects the strategic balance of geopolitical forces. Now a driving force in Pampanga's development, boasting a 4,400-hectare free port, it hosts major businesses, contributing significantly to the region's economic progress. Clark's emergence as a globally competitive aviation hub, highlighted by the Clark Civil Aviation Complex, underscores its potential for logistic excellence in Southeast Asia. Additionally, delve into its strategic role in U.S. military operations, with permanent bases vital for regional deterrence. In 2023, witness an economic resurgence, with the Clark Freeport Zone attracting $5.5 billion in investments, fueled by gaming and tourism. As Clark ascends to Asia's next major casino hub and continues its infrastructure development, including the expansion of Clark International Airport, the future promises growth and prosperity. In conclusion, the journey of Clark Air Base encapsulates resilience, transformation, and economic revitalization, symbolizing progress in the Asia-Pacific region and shaping global engagements and regional stability. I used to work in BPO, and I had an old customer who actually help build the airstrip in Clark Air Base. As a Filipino, I thanked him for it, and that he and the boys did a good job.

When they kicked the Americans out they messed up. Presence of US in Korea and Japan helped the country. Troops could have helped rebuild the country during that time but nope it didn't happen. Yeah they got kicked out because the americans/military also had a lot of negatives that wasn't resolved, but it would have been interesting to see what would have happened if they stayed.

Americans left not only bcoz the phil senate voted not to renew their continued stay but also for other reasons. First, the cold war was almost over and the US sees no need to maintain huge military bases abroad (China was still very weak at this time). Second, the mount pinatubo eruption which destroyed clark air base and subic naval base , rehabilitating it would entail tremendous cost. The reason why the phil senate voted not to allow continued US use of the bases is bcoz of several reasons as well. First, social reason, there were thousands of children born with american fathers who later abandoned them, second, human rights violations, US pilots killed several members of the cultural minories, sometimes using them as target practice. Third, US govt only offered to pay US$200m a year for the use of both clark and subic base. The US$200m will not be paid in cash but thru grants and with many conditions attached. Part of the payment will also come in the form of excess military equipment such as vietnam era huey helis which phil military dubbed as "flying coffins" or "widow makers" bcoz they tend to crash. Phil senate said payment is quite unfair considering US pays egypt and pakistan billions per year just to remain an ally of the US whereas clark air base and subic naval base are US biggest bases outside mainland USA and is important to project power in the far east. Anyway clark air base is currently being developed into a smart city where everything will be interconnected via internet. The new airport just won the most beautiful airport award globally. and will soon have a highs speed rail system attached. Subic and clark will also have rail connection apart from the current world class tollway. Things are looking up at clark city.

The Americans left because of Mt. Pinatubo's eruption. Otherwise, they refused to leave despite the Senate's fashion for them to leave.

It wasn't Ramos who drove them away. It was the Philippine senators who voted the US military out. Ramos wasn't the president when the decision was made. Ramos was the president when the final pullout was made.

I kind of wish KZfaq would stop suggesting videos like this. I was there til the 91 eruption, and would rather forget it. Every video looks back and treats it like it was all “sunshine and rainbows”, but fail to mention the nastier side of the Philippines. The coup attempts, the assassinations of military members, not being able to travel off base or told to go straight home and stay in your house. Just this old guys opinion, nothing more.

I kinda agree with you. But you have to admit that it was a beautiful place to be stationed 68/70. You’re right about having to get water by the main gate to use off base. Break ins and stealing were not to be believed. But I can’t think of to many things that were missing on base. The schools were modern and so was a lot of the base housing. The taxi or the bus could get you almost right to anything. I wish that someone could get a map of that time. And overlay it with what’s there now. I would like to find our old house. On base it was one of the prefabs. Nice floor plan. I really miss some of the fruit s . I loved the Mangoes. When they were still green. You could slice them like a potato. But that’s where the similarities ended. But I loved it with salt. And there was a small green pepper type thing. That you could get from the youngsters. Walking around Angeles city. I don’t remember the name or really the taste pretty sourer I believe. Again very tasty. The boiled peanuts.! Not a fan..🫤

And the proud natives of Pampanga because their place is hosting a US military base that the adversary knows is potentially storing battlefield nuclear weapons ( which the PH government is not allowed inside to conduct an inventory of what weapons they are storing) that in an event of a shooting war between the US Military and another super power, the place where the base is located is at risk of a tactical nuclear strike that could leave the area uninhabitable for generations to come for a war the Philippines will be dragged into. , Yes Pampanga go, go, go.
