W and it can't be confused with any other sign from the back or if it's partly covered. Thankfully no major country have had the bad but typical idea of doing their own thing, with confused People everywhere as a result. Yet.

Little bit of extra trivia for everyone... Stop signs are the same shape all over the world so if someone doesn't speak the language they still know what that sign means. It's also so you know what the sign means if it's mostly covered in snow but you can see the bottom bit of it or a side - it's the only road sign that's an octagon.

t0nito well it’s something we see everyday so we don’t really put that much attention to it Bc it’s not really necessary for us to know. Like for example which hand is used for the stop light. The Stop Sign is an Octagon, the reason it's a unique shape is because it allows road users who are approaching from a different direction to see that it's an Obligatory Stop sign, It can be identified easily at night because it has reflective strip around the edge, and even if the written ''STOP'' is covered by snow or dirt the unique shape will mean you must stop at the junction. How do people pass their test nowadays?

I don't live in Britain, I've never seen a STOP sign in UK, but I knew the answer. Because, aesthetically, a hexagon is too pointy on the horizontal axis OR vertical axis. A hexagon sign is not as simple as a triangle, and not as symmetrically pleasant as an octagon. In the same way everyone knew is not a pentagon or heptagon, simply because is not a vertical-horizontal symmetric shape (same shape by 90 degrees rotation) the same reasoning applies to hexagon.

ArsenalThom Yes but you missed the part where I said it can be overlooked. Plus doing things from memory is harder when you can't see it in front of you, hence when people take longer or are unsure on spelling a word in their head, as opposed to writing it down.

Neat it is one of the most common signs in traffic. If you can't tell what shape it is, you simply do not pay enough attention or you have to be a few sandwiches short of a picnic. Even my twelve year old brother knows how it looks like.

It's all about how the brain evaluates the information it receives and how it weighs up its importance in the situation it is presented in. For objects that are frequently seen and interacted with every day the brain will have determined important details and details that are irrelevant about that object. Important stuff about a stop sign, what it reads and its colour. The brain will recognise these things and they will be taken into consideration when making choices regarding them such as slowing the car down to stop at the junction. The shape is used to make a distinction from other road signs and their purposes but as someone becomes more accustomed to them through their driving career the shape becomes less relevant and in many will be forgotten as the brain can by that stage automatically recognise what it means and initiate the decisions that a new driver would have to consciously think about on approaching a stop sign, but with experience has become an unconscious response. I'm awful at explaining things but can you get what I'm trying to describe? There are youtube videos that explain the effect much better. This is the third comment I've seen about this. I copy and pasted the block of text above from my reply to another comment. Anyway, as a result new drivers or even those who don't drive are in some cases more likely to know the shape of the sign than an experienced driver or car enthusiast who have become so familiar with the sign that the shape is no longer a detail they can recall off the top of their head. If Neat, Zootopia96 or myself were shown a selection of pictures of stop signs slightly varying in shape, with text and colour identical, just the shape is different for each one, like the shapes in the question, I would be pretty certain that we would all immediately choose the octagon without being told a stop sign is an octagon. We all know it, it's just not deemed relevant information to our brains anymore. The more common the sign, the more likely for this to be the case. the only time the shapes are used is when you're learning what different signs mean.

@markwright3161
@markwright3161 6 жыл бұрын
When you're first learning the shape is important so that you can recognise it from other signs but once you start driving your brain begins to automatically recognise signs and what they mean. The important part of a stop sign is the colour and what is says. Something like the shape is disregarded by the brain as that's not the important part of what it's seeing so is 'forgotten'. If the question showed pictures of the sign but in each shape it would have been much easier and any somewhat experienced driver would instantly go for the octagon as that's what the brain recognises on the road and then in the question. It can be different for different people, but there is a point where it will happen in most people's brains. In this instance it's not quite directly showing how easy people forget it but that is unfortunately true for some, important details and all.

carlcepillo01 unless there’s a stop sign with one extra or one less side which means a completely different thing, then I think in this instance it doesn’t really matter whether you can remember if it’s a heptagon or an octagon, as long as you can remember it’s one of the ‘gon shapes you’ll be fine.

When it refers to the highway code it's specifically the UK's road sign design, though the contestant's time spent in Ethiopia could have caused them to doubt themselves if signage on their travels was different.

I haven't looked at a highway code since 1988 and I knew this without giving it a second thought. Clarkson is a motoring journalist, surely this is the sort of fact he should be able to call on without even a first thought? Still, having seen how many people are out on the roads who don't seem to grasp even the basics, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised.

No sense of humour? During the useless phone-a-friend the friend doesn't know the answer so he changes the subject to ask how his day has been, I thought that was pretty funny. Also at one point during the show he joked about Clarkson being subject to maybe a little bit of controversy in the past, which was funny. Either way, I think that contestant has been the most memorable on this series so far!
