Some of the older migrants had a habit of investing back home before their new country for a number of reasons: 1. Some came illegally and can be deported at anytime. 2. Others saw moving aboard as a temporary option, but later get 'stuck' 3. Their immigration status is in limbo- for example permanent residency has not been given 4. Not feeling part of the wider community All these factors and more make it hard to commit to certain things especially 1 and 3. I think all should do their own research and do what works for them. What worked 18 years ago may not be relevant today.

The same argument Lagosians ask why particular ethnic group build mansions in their villages than in the cities they live. My answer is just invest in a place you call home.

You mustn’t forget that things have changed a lot over time. In those days it was London or London. Now other cities have opened up and more encouraging with jobs etc. Did you know that in the 80s you would not find African stores in many cities.? Internet has changed everything. Information is now more available to everyone. So things have changed a lot!! Nigeria has also changed . Mentalities have changed! In those days you went to the UK not to settle. Now people are literally escaping from the country. Investments were more rewarding . So everything in context.

First what's investment? Isn't it to grow income/wealth? Going back to Africa to invest where more than 50% of the money would be consumed by inflation within a year (maybe a slight exaggeration) and when you are old it won't amount to much. Or you won't be able to use it and invest in your children's education (please don't talk about children going to inherit the properties as research has shown children born abroad rarely go back "home") or you want the kids to suffer like you did. Anyway, unless it's a high yielding business like a fuel station someone mentioned or building a place to lay my head when/if I go back I won't saddle myself with that responsibility. Today it's Lagos that's destroying properties tomorrow it might be other states. May God guide us all.

Real bad advice. The smaller cities are better because wouldn't compete. As long as you are ready to learn the culture, you will excel.

@@mojolaayeni3240 I think it is immaturity. Some of the people they snub could be their lifeline to being established in the country. Our people usually size you up based on your car, house, etc. The one who is not flashy could be the one with the vital information that will open massive doors for them. But also most of our people are there to collect at the detriment of others. And they won't stop at pulling the next person down just to move up

It is possible, but the risk is very high and they can come with very high interest rate. A friend of mine bought a house as a student, though it was some time ago. If there is a spouse, then it could be easier, but you will need a good mortgage adviser/broker

Either old or new the bottomline is making sure you get advice from someone who has updated information. Many new migrants don't have enough data to give informed information and many old migrants have too many outdated information to give, bottom line learn to research information yourself, an example is asking people not to marry from Nigeria, I did not listen and married from home and my first marriage failed and almost got me deported, but I still went back home to 9ja and married my second wife and It's the best decision of my life.
