This is a video showcasing the acceleration/speed performance of the second gen class 377s built after 2010 with more modermised and updated technologies, including the traction which is developed from the older variation (despite sounding very similar, they do have some slight added audiable layers though)
Electrostars on third rail are known to have some very limited power uptake capabilities and are worse in multiple sets, for example, an older Gen 8 car set will accelerate almost 20 seconds slower to 60mph than a 4 car set. In 10 car formation using older units (e.g 3 car+3 car+4 car) will also acceleration very similarly to an 8 car set.
That being said, Class 377/6 and 7s are a interesting case. At 5 cars long they are capable of great third rail Acceleration, almost on par with class 378s, but lack the same starting acceleration capabilities as class 378s, however have exceptional mid speed and higher end speed acceleration. however in 10 car formation, featuring 2X5car second-gen 377s, despite being limited further in 10 car formation, they are faster than any 8 car class 377 or 375 set, which is very odd comsidering they have more carriages in 10 car formation, but thats good none the less.
They take just around 70 seconds to hit 60mph, and have slow BUT STEADY acceleration towards 70mph regardless, and do so in decent time too. this is why i like the modernised Electrostars. A couple factors at play here, (probably) , it is entirely possible that alot of onboard electrical appliances/undercarriage electrical boxes have been updated with more efficient usage. meaning less overall power consumed for the train , and more power directed at the wheels as a consequence. Secondly , the development of the traction may make it more efficient on its own to be feasible to use more power at the wheels. and third option, could be that requirements for the newer class 377s are that they need a good standard of acceleration for metro/suburban routes. Id wager its a combo of all three factors, they are newer after all.

If you do want to see a class 377/6 using Notch 4, (which I have experienced before), hop on a Dorking train from Victoria. After Clapham Junction: the drivers like to use notch 4 sometimes to get to line speed. I'd usually get off at Sutton because from there the stations are pretty close together in proximity.

Yeah I hear you. There wasn't really a notch 4 until it hit like...25 mph also , the 10 cars usually come into platform 2 which it then has to switch onto the fast lines, so the driver can't just go full power . I'll try to find one that departs from platform 3 norwood junction. And even then its like southern drivers have been trained to only go notch 4 when it's like 10mph, obvs I could be wrong but it's not that common. It's annoying when trying to get footage lmao

These are pretty phenomenal at higher speeds for a power capped unit at 10 cars long. Merging all accounts of time together. I.e how long it takes to get to 12mph then adding that to how long it continues to get to 60mph and assessing the other clips between, overall it takes 68 to 70 seconds to 60mph for a 10 car 377/6 and around 63 seconds to 60mph in 5 car formation. And likely around 1 min 38 seconds to 1 min and 40 seconds to 70mph. probably the fastest batch of 3rd rail electrostars at the momemt. But only time will tell

The 377/6s do seem to sound better than the old 377s tbh but they are uncomfortable sadly

They do , they are sightly louder and more crisp . I.e you can hear them better at higher speeds than the older ones which seem to fade out of hearing range. The newer ones are more likely to have some strange obscurity in sounds at times too. Not all motors but some for sure. Some are just as quiet as oldies, but are still more crisp at speed

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 Nah the older ones are still loud if you sit in the right places

@Solomon_C I sit in the exact same place , they are louder I agree but after 50mph they taper off in audibility compared to second gens. Second gens just scream after. 75mph is the sweet spot for the sound to scream, the oldies do scream, but just not as strong.

(Me commenting on my own video for everyone to see dont mind me ) I really really want to see these hit 90mph . I estimate 3 mins on the brighton mainline incline. (Most of the Brighton mainline is a pretty consistant incline which increases max overall acceleration time . Maybe 4 and a half mins to 100mph in theory on that said incline, but possibly closer to 4 mins to 100mph on flat ground.

@gabrielstravels-discoverin7368 depending on what I'm on. If I'm checking on my videos and I'm on this account then I'll commemr using it. If I'm checking on my videos using my recreational account then I'll comment using it. It just depends which Im using. The second account (well actually my first and main account) is my normal everyday user account, where I chill and do what I want.

It seems quite jiggly and creaky. Disappointing, considering it is a newer electrostar.

Track quality around here was the same. for all 377s when I was riding out of norwood jnc was harsh. Idk I've given up on suspension , most trains shake around its about what trains are okay more than others, Its kind of unavoidable. 450s do it, 458s do it (actually more stable than 450s) (465s are an exception but shale sometimes too) , mk2 BRELs , oldie electrostars too. The only real way to stop it, it seems is to make them overly heavy..which is what we don't want. Class 332s were a good example of hulking units (180 tons per unit, fuck that shit) only OHLE is good to power those without costing huge amounts of money. Other option is by turning units into olden day loco carriages . Personally I oreffer alright suspension but a faster lighter train, slow accelration pisses me off because it becomes pointless to gear the train to higher speeds when they never reach it when they are too heavy. 444s are a ridiculous example of that , esspecially when south Western railways have stingy power suppliers. I'm sure it takes like 7 mins for the 444s to get to 100mph and that's if the trains are lucky enough to not be on a super steep incline . Its real dumb I even feel like lowkey 379s are shaky but are on decent Track, so you rarely felt it. Last factor is the way i was sat, I wasn't really resting securely,

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 Nah not all trains shake equally. 707/700 shake very much noticeably less than 377/387. It is what it is.

@Solomon_C yeah of course I mean they all shake to a degree a natural product of High speed physics on a heavy vehicle. Better than what I've experienced in the past with some 321s where I swear it felt like the carriage jumped on the track for a sec and one point and landed back onto it 😭😭😭😭😭travelling at 90mph.
