Thomas Hardy at one of his rare lighthearted moments, with a perfect ending. The beauty of this novel is that all three of Fancy's suitors are decent people, making it hard for Fancy to choose. Great novel and great film.

Know which party my paddy ancestry would have attend!😂 Been rejected more times than I could count, but not in marriage proposals. "I", married once and divorced after many children. Wont do that again. But,,, I never was rejected so honorably as she let ole porkchops down.

You have a point there, in fact much has been written of the industrial Revolution's influence on Hardy's and others' works.
