The brief was clear, build a cheap, simple, economical car that can be mass produced. The client Adolf Hitler, the lead engineer Ferdinand Porsche and the final outcome the Volkswagen Beetle AKA ‘The Peoples Car’. Its air-cooled rear engine layout, unique oval shape and ability to carry up to five passengers was revolutionary and made owning a car in 1930’s Germany possible.
In its 80-year production run, a total of 21,529,464 Beetles were produced, making it the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single platform. It became an icon of design and pop culture and is loved and adored to this day. And of course, who can forget its Hollywood movie star status, ‘Herbie The Love Bug’ ring any bells?
Featured here is a beautifully cared for 1955 model that has been with the same family from brand new for over 65 years and hence is considered a treasured family member with countless special memories attached to it.
