Thanks Chris for giving this to us, what a treat!. To me it doesn't matter what configuration a motorbike is in, 2 or 4 stroke, it isn't even relevant if you consider what a bike is without any motor attached to it...I personally love all those vintage beauties, it transported me back to my youth. To get a chance to see and hear those bikes fire up and poppity-pop was solidly sweet. Up here in Canada, CCM made hockey sticks, skates and some very johnny average bicycles, nothing like what was on your vid. Nicely done feller. Feed us more!

Back in the late '70s and early '80s at Carlsbad Raceway or Saddleback(among other tracks on the SoCal circuit, I spent a lot of Sunday's and at the start gate, KTM, Maico and Can-Am 2-strokes sounded so good The rice burners sounded a little alike but still had unique sound of their own and Kawasaki had a bit more ping in the pipe. There were rarely more than a few Honda 4-stokes in all the race classes on any day. I remember it was difficult to hear the 4-strokes at the gate but once riders were on the track the 4-stroke really tore up the dirt and seemed to get the best traction, the sound of that torque sounded pretty bitchen! I'd have to say though, I don't think any bike sounded bad, all were unique and sounded like monsters! Thank you, Chris, for putting this video together and isolating each bike, these bikes are awesome and bring back good memories! And about that Trico, was that ever featured in early Dirt Bike Magazine or Motocross Action back in the day? I don't know why but it sounds very familiar and I remember there was some buzz about it, not totally sure though.
@monticlassictv5 жыл бұрын
Greg Pitzen Hi Greg thanks for your comments, Bill Brown built a similar machine to this back in the 1970’s because at that time there was not much choice other than a Honda XL or XR if you wanted to race a Fourstroke, When he sold the original Trico he told me it was the biggest mistake he ever made in his life and that is why he decided to built this beautiful machine, I did a full magazine feature on this bike a couple of years ago in the VMX magazine and if your interested you can still obtain a back copy from their website.

Comparing 2 strokes to 4 strokes is like comparing a weed eater to a Corsair F4-U. I have owned 3 Yamaha TT500's (1 today) and still own my 1979 Yamaha SR500 with its Hi-Per-Kinetics Stage Two 650 stroker. If you read Motorcycle Classics Magazine, it's on page 6 of the September/October 2015 issue. I dug the Rickman Triumph in your video. Haven't watched it all yet. I had to stop and open my windows after the Honda CR500 clip!

You cannot put goofy ass vtwin 4 strokes, that are not used and are not even remotely fast in comparison to a single cylinder two stroke for dirt bikes in a comparison. That is completely foolish and not even comparing bikes. Its like asking if a street bike sounds better than a dirt bike. It's just dumb. Besides the fact that I've had my experience trail riding a bike and turning some over in water. I'll take that two stroke no matter how anybody thinks it sounds, because I've been ready to set fire to a damn four stroke on a trail a time or two. Two's any day....

@@monticlassictv My 1st four stroke was Cheney frame, with a B50 engine. The last bike I had new around 1979/80, with the red tank, that was a fantastic bike. My father owned a motorbike garage and amongst other things was a CCM agent, which helped a lot! I also rode that CCM 350cc trials bike once or twice as well - quite badly! I remember riding with Bob Wright, Vic Eastwood, Badger Goss, etc, at the Haynes 4 stroke meetings - although to be honest, I should say I saw their backs for a few seconds off of the start line!

Hey Chris, did the Maico frame hold up with a 500cc Triumph?
@oz2strokeman1167 жыл бұрын
I prefer two strokes but the sound that Triumph-Maico made was tops. When I was a kid and went to see Mr Motocross(Top series in 70s Oz) there was a guy called Lester Rowley racing a CCM. The underdog 4 stroke alone amongst the strokers. Well back then lots of people loved the sound of his bike because it was a rare thing to hear a four stroke. Now the shoes on the other foot. Dirt bikes should be simple and modern four strokes aren't. Two strokes make the best and most affordable dirt bikes, now back to my CR500, PE250, MX250 KTM, YZ80S, RM80B and KX80.

Dave Taylor Hi Dave there are one or two still around and I know of a couple of owners who still have these in their procession but you almost never see them on the track because of their rarity and owners tend to just keep them as show bikes. Thanks for your comments and thanks for your time viewing the video.

Be interesting to see what a Kawasaki triple two stroke fit to a special frame KX would sound like. I’ve rode both types for nearly 45 years now and both can be plenty fast. My GSX 1100 G can attain 160+ mph four stroke inline four. Air oil cool. My DR 350 can cow trail at 1 mph or reach 90 on road. Single four stroke. Air oil cool. My KD 100 M can go where mountain goats live or move plenty rapid down a dirt road. Two stroke rotary valve single air cooling. My VS 1400 can launch off a stop very well can hit 90 mph easily. V twin four stroke air oil cooled. My KX 250s 79, 80, 82 could hill climb like crazy. Two stroke reed valve air cooling. Just a few of the many types I’ve owned and ridden.

Have ridden about half of these, owned another 3 not shown (500 Husky silver tank, Bultaco 350, Puch twin carb. 250) all sound like beautiful music to these ears!! The British bikes we'd always swap the fork legs left for right, turn the whole front wheel around , and get that front brake cable running straight and out of harm's way....and the CCM kickstarter was more of a boot digger while riding than the old 75/76 Huskys were, wore holes in both boots with both bikes!...and don't even get me started on left side brake/right side shift!!! Beautiful bikes all but I will stick to the new stuff, save my very old and worn out body (suspension has changed everything!) God bless : )'

Question, at 50secs in the Honda 2stroke left foot kick, was that a Euro model ? don't remember a Honda with a left side kick in Australia.
@monticlassictv6 жыл бұрын
dave ninga Yes as far as I am aware these bikes were made with the kickstart on the left which was mainly to satisfy the European’s at the time although in 1984 Honda reverted back to the right hand kicker on all their future models.

I've had 25 bikes, twenty were dirt bikes. 4 stroke bikes are easier to listen to when your riding one. I had a 1970 Maico 400 and man that thing was loud. 4 strokes get almost twice as far on a tank of gas and you don't have to mix the gas. 4 strokes are more controllable on steep hard packed hills with loose rocks. But my 1978 yz 250 2stroke had a real punch of a powerband.
