One difference between the music at this time of Doctor Who's history and Star Trek is that Doctor Who's music was composed and recorded before the episode went into the studio, and played back live into the recording, just as it had been for several decades during the days of live television. The composition and dubbing of music after studio recording didn't begin until 1970. This means that the music is generally - though not exclusively - much more thematic and there to create atmosphere than being reactive to any action.

The next episode Strangers In Space is the first episode of a 6 part story known as The Sensorites.

The first Peter Cushing Dalek film premiered in London on 23 August 1965 (in the summer gap between Doctor Who's second and third seasons). This Aztecs story finished on 13 June 1964. So, just over a season to go (11 stories) and the show was becoming increasingly popular, especially in late 1964 and early 1965 (during the second season) with some of its highest ever ratings in its entire 26 year original run.

I've been fortunate to visit a number of Aztec and other pre-Conquest sites in Mexico. The history and culture is utterly fascinating (and horrifying). I'm glad the production team made an honest effort to treat the Aztecs as humans.

Hi, just found your channel and watched some of your Earlier reactions, If it has not been mentioned when Dr Who was converted to DVD format They added a lt of behind the scenes extras, interviews and showing how things were made, Aldso they added optional commentary tracks to the episodes which include producers writers and various of the actors discussing what they remembered from the production. Im not sure if you have access to this but its very interesting for insights into the problems, for example the studio lights went off same time each day so they had to finish on time.

A great historical story. Certainly one of my favourites from that era. I presume the Doctor took the pulley to stop the Aztecs following them into the tomb. Interestingly, whilst the wheel was known about in this part of the world (used in toys) there wasn't much in the way of practical applications until the arrival of the Europeans. To use a Star Trek analogy, leaving the pulley around with an understanding of how it worked would probably be classed as a violation of the Prime directive. It would be a fairly minor one though, as the culture is soon to be destroyed anyway. Not sure if you are aware but the episode footage goes out of sync as you get further into the reaction.

Yeah, the synch thing is annoying. Shortcoming of my set up I am afraid.

Im wondering if you have considered reacting to Terry Nations "Blake 7" or one of my favourites the mysterious and spooky cult classic "Sapphire And Steel" by PJ Hammond. there was also a very short Series by Anthony Horowitz called "Crime Traveller".

I remember both being on when I was a kid, and funnily enough have been considering reacting to both S&S and B7

I liked that Hartnell was able to express the emotional cost of breaking the real connection of affection that the Doctor had with Cameca. Without that, it would have seemed a very callous exploitation and a retrograde step in the Doctor's character development. At the start of the season one could easily imagine the Doctor using Cameca to gain information then moving on without a backward glance.
