This graceful English beast is in the shop because the dash looks like a Christmas tree. Check Engine, ABS, TRAC, and even the "bulb burned out" indicators are lit up!
Main customer complaint is that the cooling fans stay ON and drain the battery!!
It's fussy, but the Launch is at least able to read the trouble codes to give us a direction.

Enjoy!

I've worked at Old Jags for years and the ABS issue is well known in these. It can often be fixed without a great expense by re soldering the main power supply in the control module and your customer will love u forever if you sort it. Jags are complex but owners tend to love them and if u build a relationship with them they can be Good customers and loyal too. Happy to help

I had a 1993 Geo Tracker (Suzuki Sidekick) with a similar issue with the electric cooling can coming on randomly. It was a new car, but dealer could not find the problem. I bought the Suzuki Service manual and looked at what turned the fan on, only two things: AC being turned on or thermostatic switch in water jacket on block. Gave the switch a tap with a screwdriver handle and fan came on, tap it again and off. Only took about 15 minutes to track problem down by looking at what could turn the fan on (like you did with the Jag.) The screwdriver handle tap is a great low tech diagnostic technique. :)

Scotty is moving to Tennessee, so maybe the owner can stop by for a Scotty custom cat cleaning. How appropriate, since Scotty loves cats. No wonder he perfected the cat cleaning procedure. Who is "Scotty'?
@billsimpson604
@billsimpson604 3 жыл бұрын
@@ckm-mkc Scotty Kilmer is a car mechanic in Houston with one of the most popular car repair sites on the Internet. He has about a billion KZfaq views, and has been fixing cars for 52 years. He used to be on a major TV network with car repair tips. He did a report claiming that you can sometimes take a cat off a car and wash it out, to make it serviceable again. Most viewers find him entertaining, since he says whatever he wants to say. Scotty doesn't get into the circuit design and electronic theory, like Ivan does. He just hits the high spots for the general public, not for professional mechanics who repair cars for a living, like Ivan, and Eric, at 'South Main Auto Repair' do. They are like engineering teachers, whereas Scotty is a car repair entertainer. Houston doesn't have zoning, so Scotty fixes people's cars in his suburban driveway, or occasionally, out in the street! We will miss the views of his garage full of stuff and his boat covered with vines.

@@n9wox He said it will be torn down. But he said the main reason he is leaving is to go be near one of his sons, and grandchildren. With that many views on KZfaq, Scotty is a rich man, so he doesn't need the money he will make selling his home at several times what he paid for it decades ago. And most of the year, working in Tennessee is much nicer than working in the very humid and hot Houston climate. No hurricanes there either. When I was a kid, we visited a former neighbor, Bill Roberson, who moved to the mountains of Virginia, not far from VMI, where he worked. He and his wife owned a big old house up on top of a hill. At night you could go out on a back porch and see no lights, except thousands of fireflies. That was one beautiful location, surrounded by forested mountains. He even had 2 small rivers within a few hundred yards downhill from the home. Someone had driven a steel rod into the riverbed above a natural depression, so that you could sit in the depression in the rock and get a water massage. He was a WW II vet whose only son died of a brain tumor at age 12, shortly after he died in his fifties from heart failure. I often wonder who is living in that house now, if it even still exists. Hurricane Katrina flooding got the address, so I'll never find it on Google Earth. Just as well, I guess. The moral of the story, get a laugh whenever, and however you can. Scotty is a start.

On certain older British cars, the sensor ground of the O2 sensor has to be connected to the body of the sensor itself (e.g. engine ground). Normally, the sensor ground and signal are isolated from the body and heater inside the sensor. Connecting the wrong kind of sensor will have both inputs of the differential amplifier go high and thus the output haywire. Ground the sensor ground somewhere else and your problem is gone. You will find this information almost nowhere. Many aftermarket sensors are just universal O2 sensors with the right connector and will thus simply not work.

Bought one of these cars in October as i fancied a big car again, a very late 98 X300 3.2 Sport, was only £1000 (i'm in Scotland), it's been a nightmare, only used it a couple of times then one morning just wouldn't crank, central locking was not working (off the Fob or Key), engine light is going out after a few seconds indicating the car is immobilized, battery is good (as this can be a cause). A bit of research pointed to the Body Processor Unit, got another BPU (same part number), car was still the same, then someone suggested it is the Security ECU so replaced that (again exact same part number), central locking works now off the key but not the Fob (brand new batterys in Fob), engine light still the same but now car wont shift out of park so it's really stuck now, i have had to haul it around with a trolley jack in the garage (not easy as i'm only 5'7" and 74kg) as it was blocking my bikes in, have tried swapping old parts back and forth, no joy, at the end of my tether, getting sick of it, it's a lovely old car, drove nice when it was running but starting to wish i hadn't bought it now. I dont mind welding and mechanical stuff (messed with cars all my days) but no patience for voodoo electrical shit.

A good engine but...lucas electronics are iffy. That fan relay/ground electrical system would bother me while trying to fall asleep at night. Might be worth setting up a video camera and a light to record what happens overnight to get a grip about those ghost fans. Seems unfair that the ABS modules have to have a $900 price tag on the replacement part. I have heard there are rebuilders who will re-dip or resolder those circuit boards as the number one cause for failure is a cracked solder point. Also, there are aftermarket CAT's available that meet OEM standards which should pass the State requirements.

Ivan, ref the cooling fans draining the battery issue. I think you allowed yourself to be "blinded" in your diagnostic approach by what the customer stated. i.e. Customer states: The fans continue to run after I turn the car off and they drain the battery, when I come back to it the battery is flat. Reality: The fans in most vehicles have an overrun capability to continue to cool when the engine / coolant is hot when the engine is stopped. Modern diesel vehicles particularly (looking at you VW) can run the fans at max for ~10 mins after engine shutdown if they were in the middle of trying to do a DPF purge as they run super hot during that process. (You know this, just putting it here for context). I would have checked the health of the battery and for parasitic draws after key off and sleep time out. I work as a diagnostician in a different field and it is so easy to get "blinded" by the customer like this. Any information the customer can provide is always great and should not be dismissed for sure - they probably know the usual operation of the equipment inside out and notice anomalies. However, in this case I'd approach it as the customer complaint being "my battery keeps dying when I park the car for any length of time", make a mental note of the ancillary info about the fan overrun then proceed to diagnosing the core issue from scratch. I still get "blinded" from time to time, so please don't think this is in any way a criticism, it happens. Thanks for the great videos :D And try to ignore the armchair keyboard warriors like.... me... I guess :/ Now I feel bad :(

There is only so much we can do in diagnosis with a limited time frame with real time tools. Ohh for the "simplicity" of the Etype, XJ6 etc with virtually NO electronics. Triple SU carbies , thermo fan etc etc. Could do 90% of all the servings with simple tools.

Launch Diagun would be my choice. Under $700 bucks on my Amazon Store. Not the cheapest, but will pay for itself very quickly by saving you trips to the dealer :)

Had a 2019 dodge with the security gateway where you can't do anything without registering to the dodge website to clear codes or bio controls that Keth told us about. Miss his imputs. Came from a body shop. Autel would not do it. A couple thousands of dollars scan tool right. All it took was a $20 code reader. Ssshhhhhhh! Let keep this a Secret! Had a 03 lincoln LS. Had to program keys to the IC or Ecm. I can't remember which. Awful as Keth would say, didn't even have that function. The launch 431x did and could! Moral is have more than 1 basket.
