Another fantastic video, Michael. I recently retired and have taken up oil painting and have learned a ton watching your videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm. This video in particular has special meaning for me; my dad had the same truck when I was a kid and he taught me how to drive it when I was about ten years old.

Michael, thank you so much for your wonderful videos. They have gotten me through some pretty tough times in the last year+ going through cancer treatment. I always look forward to your videos, just wish they were longer. Getting back into painting again, yay!! I love your very impressionistic approach. I just received some Rosemary Co long flats, natural fiber brushes and will be ordering the synthetic flats you use. Wondering what brush you use for your initial composition drawing in burnt sienna. Also, do you thin your blocking in process with gamsol only, or maybe mixed with Galkyd? 50/50? Again, many thanks for encouraging me to get back to painting!! Will be joining your patreon page very soon.

I notice you don't strike your eye level across the panel first to register the position of shapes. You seem to work through this naturally. The line can really assist in elevation relationships. Always enjoy your seascapes.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings Жыл бұрын
In the beginning I'm most interested in the arrangement of shapes. I like keeping things fluid until the shapes are arranged in a way that works for me. I don't strike an eye level but I do strike a line for the horizon when visible.
@paulallentaylor6034
@paulallentaylor6034 Жыл бұрын
@@chamberlainpaintings I understand the visible horizon. In truth, the horizon and eye level are the same. It's only when we stand a far distance from a shore it's an visual reference. I would chose a 1/3 up or down from the panel edge and strike a line, using that as my eye level/horizon. Please don't take this the wrong way. I really like your methods. This painting with architecture and street level is where I feel the line is beneficial. My approach would be finding a feature of the truck that appears to be at my standing eye level regardless of the street slope. I'll proportion shapes from there. I'd like to see more pieces like this. It's a nice switch from the Coastal works.

Wow, excellent work! It really is impressive how you did so little to the headlights, just suggesting light and dark, and yet they read so realistically. I know you showed a watercolor of this on Patreon. Did you make that in the same session, or consider it a study for this? (Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it.) It is interesting that you’ve added Indian Yellow to your palette. I’ve been on an Indian Yellow kick recently. It’s such a beautiful warm, transparent yellow.

Hi! I'm curious if you could share some information about the finish of your paintings. You seem to apply the paint rather thinly so do they dry with a glossy or matte appearance? I appreciate your technique of scrubbing the paint, which I find easier to work with, too. However, I also love the glossy finish of thick impasto. Additionally, I was wondering about the effect of working on a board surface. I know you coated it, but doesn't the material still absorb some of the oil? In my experience, boards always seem to absorb at least some oil no matter how well they're coated.

Love it! I'm a fan of car paintings with a loosen style and this one has it all Mike. Hey I've seen a lot of videos from SF with car break-ins...are you safe down there? The world has gone seriously to shite in the last few years. I'm starting to see many things oddly off about modern society and global governments, don't know if you can concur. Haven't you noticed a big decline lately?
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings Жыл бұрын
Thanks Martin! Yes, the car break-ins are a serious problem. I feel bad for the tourists who get their luggage stolen. Most locals know not to leave anything of value visible in their cars. It's mostly in SF and LA. California is poorly governed but I still love it here.

Great tutorial thanks, question do you squash vehicles intentionally. cause I’ve noticed often when you paint a vehicle that they’re more squashed on the Y axis - the left to right axis. Your windshield is very different than the actual one. On purpose or is that just kind of your look? Thanks.

Just came across your channel. Really like what you are doing and how you are presenting it on your channel. I do have a couple of questions. As in this painting, It looks like you are just holding your camera with one hand with an occasional shot from a tripod maybe. Or do you have it mounted on yourself somehow. What kind of camera? Your phone or GoPro or? ALSO...what kind of panel are you doing your 16x20's on? Thanks much and I look forward to going through your other videos.
