Cypress trees are definitely challenging to paint. You did a wonderful job with your composition, shapes and design of space. It is a joy to watch you paint and listen to your running commentary.

I really like the sketch-in of the trees. Great shapes! There's so much to learn in this video - adding/subtracting elements that improve the composition, color and value considerations, not progressing until you have a pleasing block in. Thanks Michael!

I love the cypress trees framing the ocean. Great tree angles, and movement through years of exposure to wind. Roots clinging to the rocky cliff edge. I just can't get enough of painting landscapes. Beautiful study, and will make an impressive painting. Possibly even a series of paintings in different weather conditions.

Great painting. New subject with its own challenges. It felt that you were compressing the values with the trees. Its almost trying to show subtle changes in colour without it ending up a kaleidoscope of unnatural colours. I thought you could have retained the rocks in the middle with some white water and spray. Again, enjoyed the 'journey' and how you dealt with some of the issues the subject presented. Brilliant video.

Nice selection and composition of complex elements! I'm unfamiliar with painting in oil and find your videos fascinating. I did have a question about the brushwork you used to render the Monterey Cypress foliage, which to me looks counterintuitive. I know that in ink painting (admittedly a very different medium), unless distant conifers are being depicted the brush movement would be essentially very short, vertical strokes moving horizontally outward to express the mostly vertical energy of the needles even though they are only visible as a foliage mass. Did you avoid this out of stylistic considerations, or would it simply not work in oil?

Great video and really like how you handled the shadows on the tree trunks. But, the 5 branches in the bottom left quarter that run off the edge, somehow feel unresolved. What purpose do they serve and how do they strengthen the composition? Personally, I think the number could be limited or done away with all together. Really looking forward to seeing revisited one a larger size.
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Monterey cypress are very challenging to paint/compose. Especially close up. They're beautiful but awkward. If you clean up all the random branches it doesn't capture the true nature of these trees, As I mentioned, I don't have it figured out. To be honest I don't think anyone else does either. I've seen very few good paintings of these trees.
@douglasriddle6447
@douglasriddle6447 2 жыл бұрын
@@chamberlainpaintings I think the painting is great. Those branches just led my eyes off the edge of the painting. For the sake of composition, what lessening the number of branches to two, only one leading off the edge and one shorter with vegetation/leaves on top? Personally I think all trees are a challenge, as are skies and the ocean, all of which you seem to do so effortlessly. And am really looking forward to seeing a bigger version of this painting
