Listening to this, as a singer myself, I think what you are hearing is that focus on the voice as an independent entity that singers often have - The Voice is a gift, it can dominate your psyche - when it isn’t right, the world is dark, when it is in the zone, the force is with you! But always, it leads you, not you it. And if you have, as he had, a phenomenal instrument (and he talks of it not only as if it were an entity, but as an instrument), you live to serve it. He definitely in this and other interviews has this sense of being driven by the need to develop and promote that extraordinary gift. Sure, people differ in their taste in voices, but I think you would have to have cloth ears to not recognize that this is one of the great voices, whether you think it’s “ingolata” or “bel canto”, - whatever you think it is - it is outstanding - and it was also coupled with extraordinary physical beauty. Was a joy to hear him sing live, that velvet baritone, one for the ages! First time i heard Dmitry was in Wienstaatsoper in Onegin, about 12 years ago and my sister and I were absolutely blown away, then as Rigoletto in Royal Opera House, Simone Bocanegra, then Don Carlo also, wonderful, wonderful voice, so so missed on opera scene today.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky to me, comes across as a person full of humility. If some people perceive him differently it is probably because Dmitri is mentally different from other individuals. We all are. Also as an artist of the highest caliber, Dmitri has to put up with a lot of envy and jealousy. This he has to process within and go no. Also life hardens all of us in some way or the other.To me Dmitri is the most precious gift from heavens to the humankind.

I’ve tried to be a tenor my whole life because I never liked the sound of the baritone voice.....until I started to really listen to Maestro Hvorostovsky. Of course, I was never a tenor and. now, at age 47 and long past the age where I might have had a career, I can embrace being a true lyric Baritone without feeling like I’m less of a singer because my voice can’t reach those “money” notes. This is his gift to me. Spasiba, Maestro!

Please do not confuse lack of modesty with arrogance and/or self assurance. This man was 'larger than life'. Everything he did and achieved is to this day, awe inspiring. I would like to believe this man was as strong as - or actually was, the proverbial - Russian bear. That makes his passing so much harder to believe and understand. For the life of me I can not understand why, this 'Mensch' in particular, had to be taken away from us at such a young age by such an ugly and unforgiving disease. Let us refrain from judging - or God forbid, criticize - this great and never to be forgotten man, in life and in death.

I definitely take his "perfect instrument" comment differently than others. He does NOT say that he has the perfect voice, but that his instrument is perfect. That implies to me his confidence in mastery of vocal technique. There is no perfect voice. I think we ought to listen to what people say specifically.

Being a world wide opera star Khvorostovski didn't refuse singing in front of ordinary people in the street concerts. First (and the last time) I saw him in the street concert dedicated to the V-Day. He sing "Katusha". Usually only easy performers perform this street (square) concert, so I was really impressed to see Khvorostovski singing there. It was 2015, two years before he gone. Perhaps (definitely) he felt his end and acting like last time. He could not do another way.

He had a very interesting accent. His English was obviously amazing but his accent doesn’t even sound very Russian. It almost sounds like it had a hint of Central Europe. Maybe having sung in many languages has heavily influenced his accent.

Self belief sustains a lot of people in their chosen careers don't knock it!

That is the reason why so many Russians don't like to give interview in English because they have to think really hard what to say in English since not everything is parallel translation and then they get critiqued for what they said. I watched him in many Russian interviews and there was nothing arrogant about him.

I always find it amusing to read/hear comments concerning how well a non-native English speaker has mastered English. For the record, there are 743 million non-native speakers in the world who speak English as their second language or roughly twice the population of the USA. I suspect that many of them speak English flawlessly. As far as how fluent a non-native English speaker is concerned, there are numerous factors that determine how easy it is to learn any foreign language including English. Furthermore, how difficult a person finds learning another language varies from individual to individual. In conclusion, unless you are an experienced linguist specializing in learning a foreign language, it is best to abstain from making uninformed comments about how well a person speaks English or any another language other than his/her own. The same applies even if you yourself are fluent in another language other than your mother tongue.

What a wonderful man and son! Eastern European parents are different. It is not common to tell the children that they are wonderful! Instead they would say: yes,… but!….😂ˋ maybe this has changed, but it happened to me a lot. Whenever I was complemented for any reason my mother would immediately respond with yes…. But…. I raised my children differently, and they still did not turn out spoiled!

I'm not an admirer of communist or authoritarian systems in general but the USSR has to be acknowledged that its education system was quite remarkable. To think that both he and Nureyev, for example, were able to study opera and classical ballet in their somewhat remote places of origin, is not common in other countries. Very sad he passed away.

Tuve un comentario precipitado de melómano ignorante, al confundir barítono con tenor. Cada eslabón musical tiene sus propios derroteros. Al escuchar a Dmitri Hvorostovsky , comprendí lo errado que estaba , al no separar las fronteras de la voz, ahora sí puedo decir que fue , el mejor barítono del mundo. Mi ego fue compararlo con el cantante de ópera más brillante que ha dado la música Luciano Pavarotti , olvidandome que el italiano es TENOR. La ignorancia es atrevida. Ambos fueron monstruos con su voz, dichosos en el cielo que los están escuchando.

No es un bajo barítono. Bajo barítono son Bryn Terfel o Erwin Schrott; tienen voces mucho más cavernosas. Hvorostovsky es un barítono lírico, y su elección de repertorio lo demuestra. Lleva años sin cantar Don Giovanni porque dice que es demasiado grave para él, por ejemplo. Es muy cuidadoso con eso. Al menos, es como lo describe él mismo.
