In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Hiroyuki Sawano and Attack on Titan for the first time. I first heard music from this Anime series in late October. In that episode, we heard a suite of themes from the show. Now, we're hearing one of those themes in their full original form. I continue to be moved by this music and its storytelling power. I hope you enjoy!

Hey Doug. I´m a 52 year old man and my son introduced me to anime through Attack On Titan. I highly recommend it. the Japanese/S-East Asian art of storytelling is utilized in these series to the max and I was literally blown away by the quality of this. I´m definitely going to watch the whole series again. Each episode is around 20 minutes long with few being longer but it goes so fast you don´t notice it. Only problem with Attac On Titan is that you won´t be able to watch much other anime afterwards.... it´s like having a Rolls Royce as a first car. I would recommend some Studio Gibli anime movies as well. Spirited Away is a masterpiece and Howl´s Moving Castle another good one. Just do it. I´m pretty certain you will like it.

I'm a 39 year old man who grow up with anime as a kid myself. I have only watched one new anime since season 1 of Attack on Titan aired back in 2013. It's like you said, I feel like I finally got myself that Rolls Royce and I don't need anything else. Might suck for my kids when they grow up. They'll want to watch all sorts of things with me and I might just be that annoying dad and grumble how it's not as good as AoT 😅 .

the first part of the track was also in the suite but with lyrics. The lyric version was used in the 3rd season and is called "appleseed". the second part of the track was again also part of the suite, without alteration. I’d highly recommend Attack on Titan as your first anime, if you’re okay with a rather crazy, dark, yet very grounded story… If you watch and care to provide reactions, I and many others would certainly enjoy watching it, as a separate playlist of content. You’d definitely bring more fans/listeners in with that type of content, as well. If not, if you prefer to continue the musical journey only- I have many suggestions but “Ashes on the Fire” is a really good piece, “Call of Silence,” and “So is est immer.”

When you said that the music really makes you want to know what's going to happen next. This track is my favourite from the series and maybe from anime as a whole - there's a previous version of th8is track titled "Vogel im Kafig" (Bird in a Cage) but I think this one with the synth in there feels a bit more powerful. This version in particular is associated with an extremely pivotal moment in the show which in itself attaches such strong emotions to the song that I can't help but get hyped up when I hear it. There are several reoccurring musical themes and melodies throughout the scoring of the 4 seasons of the show, some versions have lyrics, some don't, youseebiggirl is a compilation of 3 other songs. I think in the 4 'seasons' there are something like 87 half hour episodes, plus the last 2 'speicals' are combined episodes of 2 and 3 respectively. season 1 had 25, season 2 had 12, season 3 had 23 and season 4 had 30 plus the 2 aforementioned specials that tie 2 and 3 episdes into each special. There are also some supplementary episodes that were direct to dvd releases between the 4 year release gap from season 1 to season 2. The time continuity in world between the first 2 seasons is instant, something to keep in mind for later. There's a recommended order to view those supplements if you want to stay spoiler free for maximum shock value, they are back stories to certain characters and events that don't fit in the seasonal continuity of the show. I'm sure the other commenters will give you the proper instructions if you decide you want to watch it. It's a great show to start off as your first anime and also the worst. It's likely that no other show will live up to it.

Warning if you plan on watching the show I do not recommend watching this video with all of the openings because they show A LOT of the show and it will be spoiled for you. I heavily recommend watching this show I think it is the best anime so if you don't watch any others you at least got away with watching the best of the best.

Hi Doug! I would absolutely love it if you did a video reacting to each of the opening and ending songs for Attack on Titan. It would be on the longer side, but not too bad. You could always split it into two videos. The songs are so good and it would be great to get your musical wisdom on them

I love your reaction! Esp from a classical music composer! I love classical music but not really went into it but its so cool when both of my world meet (classical and anime) hshsh A little explanation, this OST usually used when the MC (main character) went into battle and some "bad" things happened in the battle.. idk how to explain it but the music speak abt this "rush" and "adrenaline" and i think a little "desperate" in it too :]]

This anime show is a masterpiece with an impressive story and characters development, the animation and the music in this are simply awesome, even though you're not familiar with watching animes o think you'd like this one because Shingeki no Kyojin story is really deep and involving. I really enjoy your videos with technical comments on every music you analyze, I'm total dummy technically to music, but I still love it, obviously, also, I love hearing from someone who understands more so I can learn! Thanks a lot!

Hi Doug! First time watching one of your videos and i really enjoyed it. I love the music from AoT! I think both Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto conposed some amazing tracks for this series. If you are interested, i suggest you also check out some of Sawano's and Yamamoto's music from the anime 86: Eighty-Six. I think they hold the same emotional and compelling factor that the music in AoT has. I recommed the tracks "Shin" "Eighty Six" and "Underneath the Sky" and "SPEARHEAD". I promise you will not be disappointed.

This is genuinely one of the best soundtracks I have ever heared, and it underlines the watching experience and the story of AOT so beautifully and seamlessly. Just hearing a piece gets me all in my emotions and puts me back to my first time watching it! Hiroyuki Sawano is incredibly masterful with his craft and I have - no lie - never heard a piece that he was involved with that didn't fucking floor me. Of course AOT is a huge and long-spanning series, but the way the OST is composed reminds me of How To Train Your Dragon, as in there are certain themes and melodies that you will encounter again and again in different variations, and they can feel distinctly different. To me that is the mark of an amazing soundtrack

The series is filled with countless ost´s that catch you completely off guard. Sometimes its not even music, its just sounddesign in the background that progresses into a song and its so unique. Getting into the series I had no Idea it was gonna have such a unique ost which made watching it so fun cause I was blown away by how vibrant and out of this world the sounddesign is. I recommend listening to ``army go`` or ``2chi`` from season 1 ost

PSYCHO-PASS (2012) the first series starring: Seki Tomokazu as Kōgami Shinya & Sakurai Takahiro as Makishima Shogo. Composer: Kanno Yugo. Songs by: Ling Tosite Sigure (TK's band), Nothing's Carved in Stone & EGOIST. It's one of those "thinking required" shows. A Sci-fi series based in an utopian society. Code Geass (2006 - 2008; 2019) starring: Fukuyama Jun as Lelouch Lamperouge, Sakurai Takahiro as Kururugi Suzaku, Koshimizu Ami as Kouzuki Kallen & Yukana as C.C.. Composers: Nakagawa Kotaro & Kuroishi Hitomi. Also Sci-fi (ish) with mecha. 86 -Eighty-Six- (2021-2022) 2 seasons composed by Sawano Hiroyuki & KOHTA Yamamoto. Songs by Sawano Hiroyuki feat. mizuki, Sawano Hiroyuki feat. Gemie & Sawano Hiroyuki feat. Takahashi Honoka. Based on a sci-fi military action light novel series written by Asato Asato and illustrated by Shirabi. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Demon Slayer (2019-) we've had 4 seasons, a movie and a 5th season starting in April. Starring: Hanae Natsuki as Tanjiro, Kitou Akari as Nezuko, Matsuoka Yoshitsugu as Inosuke & Shimono Hiro as Zenitsu. Composers: Shiina Go & Kajiura Yuki. Songs by: LiSA, FictionJunction feat. LiSA, Aimer, Man With a Mission x milet & My First Story x Hyde. A supernatural series involving yokai (demons). A 23 volume manga series. If you watched SnK (Attack on Titan) in Japanese you'd know that Hanae played Falco & Shimono played Connie. Kaji Yuki who was Eren had a small but important part in the first series. Trigun Stampede (2023). Some fans of the original anime series didn't really like this one. I've seen the original and I liked this one more. The animation is different, which was a turn off for some people. Nightow enjoyed it. So if the creator doesn't have a problem with it why should anyone else? Composed by Kato Tatsuya. Starring Matsuoka Yoshitsugu as Vash, Hosoya Yoshimasa as Nicholas, Andou Sakura as Meryl & Ikeda Junya as Millions Knives. Based on a post-apocalyptic gun-action manga by Naitou Yasuhiro. Oh btw it was a prequel. ANother side note: Hosoya played Reiner in AoT Gundam: Tekketsu no Orphans (2015-2016) Because I think every recommendation list needs a Gundam series and this one's my favourite. Starring (and I'm not bias) Hosoya Yoshimasa as Orga, Kawanishi Kengo as Mika & Hanae Natsuki as Biscuit. Composed by Yokoyama Masaru. Songs of note by: Man With a Mission, Spyair, Granrodeo & uru. Guilty Crown (2011) starring Kaji Yuki as Shu & Nakamura Yuuichi as Gai. Composed by Sawano Hiroyuki. Songs of note by: Egoist & supercell. Inserts featuring: Kobayashi Mika, mpi, Aimee Blackschleger & Boom Boom Satellites. Sci-fi series. An original anime. I could go on for years likely.

About how I'm obsessed with composers, Japanese music, & seiyuu (Japanese voice actors) and that I really, truly, 99.9% of the time pick what anime to watch based on who does the music and the seiyuu in them? (I don't read the plot) I also probably should have mentioned: Tokyo Ghoul (2014) it had an amazing soundtrack too with Yamada Yutaka composing. Followed by Tokyo Ghoul √A (2015). Featured likely one of the most known Openings "unravel" by TK from Ling Tosite Sigure. Starring Hanae Natsuki as Kaneki. The manga readers didn't like it, but I've never read it. It's followed by Tokyo Ghoul:re but I haven't watched it completely yet. That's the problem with anime there are too many choices of things to watch. With every genre imaginable. I've been watching anime for a long time now. Not to date myself but I first got introduce to anime when I went off to college by a friend of a classmate. That anime was Cowboy Bebop on VHS. It was in English. Steven J Blum played Spike. He's a pretty amazing VA I follow him on twitter. I mean sure i watched Digimon & Sailor moon (censored to hell), which are obviously anime, but they aren't like what I can get now. Or even a few years later after the Cowboy Bebop intro (which btw I still haven't watched it completely even though everyone says its amazing). I prefer watching anime (and Video Games) in Japanese. There's just more feeling and emotion in it. My favourite Suite by Sawano Hiroyuki on YT is “MOBILE SUIT GUNDAM UNICORN” suite - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9iPg7V217bSkmQ.htmlsi=dir_UxifNEdPm2g7 KOHTA's on the Synthesizer & Sawano's of course on the piano. Gundam Unicorn is an anime i bought the music for before watching the series. Just because Sawano was the composer.

This is one of the most popular songs from the OST's for the show as it plays an important part in amplifying the emotion of a significant story moment in the 2nd season & is derived from a season 1 song Vogel im Kafig, absolutely a must listen too btw!. As a note, Hiroyuki Sawano's song naming convention makes little sense. Sawano makes multiple iterations & derivatives of many of the tracks, A worthwhile listen comparison would be to listen to the very pop esque song Barricades(movie ver.) & then to the season 3 track Barrichestra to see what he does.

Love the commentary and analysis from a musical theory perspective, certainly not something I've encountered very often. What I think that is missed out when purely listening to the music however, is the context and the setting of the scene in which this song is played in Season 02 of AOT. Without giving anything away, the protagonist and his group are tired and have just overcome a grueling challenge that they have not managed to escape unscathed. Their morale was wavering, as were their determination, when a revelation occurred that involves a regretful betrayal, leading straight into an epic battle which was the climax of the season. This song was paced in such a way to coincide with the story developments, which explains some of the features like the direct that was mentioned. The lyrics further add to the gravitas of the scene, as each one of concepts raised represent the various character development stages that the group has gone through to reach that point of the story. To truly appreciate the depth of this piece, one will need to go through the entire story up until that point as it all converges into this masterful arrangement. Highly recommend watching AOT from start to finish, even if you're just watching to see how the music was crafted for the show. A word of warning though, while it's considered mainstream, there are a few brutal/violent scenes in AOT that some people may find disturbing.
