Sad Wings Of Destiny is a largely overlooked work of genius. It would be great if you could review some more of their stuff; Victim Of Changes, Beyond The Realms Of Death, The Sentinel, Blood Red Skies and Sinner are all Judas Priest classics.

Best Priest album but you need "Victim of Changes" off the same album to really hear Rob's astounding vocal abilities!

Robs voice has such a beautiful range. The pain he felt in his life really is expressed so lovely in his voice.

This song is literally Judas Priest's Stairway to heaven. It starts slow with vocals and guitar, then slowly builds until the climax. A truly gifted band.

20 year olds wrote this song and if you really listen you can appreciate the science and genius of it. Brillant.

Priest should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame based on this song alone, not counting the hundreds of other great songs they produced. This is the most amazing thing ever recorded, I have loved it since the 1970s.

One of the greatest Metal albums of all time. Period.

9:55 his off the cuff piano bit perfectly times and mimics the guitar without him ever hearing the song. This dude is at an insanely high level of musical mastery.

Totally missed out on that guitar solo. Tipton's work on that is simply amazing. The technique involved with it is in the Gilmour/Page/Beck/Clapton league. You have to be a guitarist to even begin to appreciate the timing/technique he pulled off with that one.

Im a guitarist and vocalist, I have been listening to this…Judas Priests Dreamer Deceiver for 20 years now…it never fails to simply astonish me and realize what we are capable of with music.

Comparing Halfords voice to colors, that man is the entire color spectrum. The pot of gold at the end of the vocal rainbow.

The ending of Deceiver was timed well in my oppinion, because the next thing after that is Prelude and then Tyrant. If it had been more drawn out, the dynamics of transition to Prelude would be lost. It is an album that sounds best when listened to from start to beginning.

Doug, Rob is still singing extremely well today at 70 yrs old. Still hits the high notes as well as a whole new cool tone he uses today.

By the way, Mr. Doug, if only for yourself, go back and watch the live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, which was shot around this time. It's when the band were still finding their way/their sound. Halford hits all those freakishly high-notes so well live. Also, if you want hard/fast, please, do a review of Painkiller. (You won't need a haircut, for a while, after that one.) :)

Hey Doug, so glad you finally did some Priest. I would suggest "Beyond the realms of death", wich I consider the epitomy of the power (heavy metal ) ballad.

Doug you have barely scratched the surface of Robs vocal range.

A part of me wants to say that the actual title of the song(s) is "Dreamer/Deceiver," where "Dreamer" is the ballad and "Deceiver" is the metal part. Gull Records already messed up pressings of Sad Wings Of Destiny by swapping sides 1 and 2 (even on the CD release...). "Dreamer" and "Beyond The Realms Of Death" are my favorite Glenn Tipton solos.

First time I heard dreamer, deciver is 41 years ago. My favorit guitar solo and epic track by Judas Priest. Love it even today ❤

Good on you for picking up Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. All 3 of these were a significant influence on Judas Priest, especially early Priest. They got the whole dark and evil sounding vibes and riffs from Sabbath, blues from Zepp and general speed and shred from Purple. Judas Priest were probably the most important pioneer of speed metal, but not the first. Purple were first with songs like Speed King and Fireball (I believe this is the first instance of double kick drumming in rock/metal). And yes, Judas Priest themselves were an influence on Iron Maiden, along with the aformentioned bands (especially Purple), and (Ronnie Dio-fronted) Rainbow.

He said that's an "impressive vocal range." I like his sense of Humorous understatement😂

"Here Comes The Tears" is an excellent choice to show how diverse they were in their early days. Also, "Last Rose Of Summer" is another good one.

This was from Rob in his 20s, saw him in concert this week and even now at 71 he can still hit those notes very impressive. Unfortunately they didn't play this song as it's one of my favorites but still an amazing show.

Love your interpretation between the positive and negative. Many of their songs are about the underdog overcoming and are positive as a whole.

Heard this at 14. Defenders was one of the first albums I'd ever bought after hearing Rock Hard , Ride Free on the radio. BLOWN AWAY. So bought everything by them after that and realized their diversity. But Sad Wings was what cemented them in my brain. And Dreamer Deceiver/Dreamer and Victim of Changes have been at arms length for the last 4 decades. Thank you for your appreciation and comments.

The best Priest is the 70's Priest. My personal favorite is Stained Class.

I have listened to this record a thousand times and Rob's voice still gives me chills.This LP has never been out of the rotation since I bought in about 1976.

I hit the like button 10 times. Yes, this is probably lacking the harmonic complexity to impress a classical composer. But this is one of the best rock songs of all time.

80’s priest was half and half for me, some good stuff and some not so good stuff. 90’s Priest was essentially a one shot deal with Painkiller (not dismissing Jugulator but it didn’t really leave a mark). 70’s Priest is something else, excellent stuff to be found on those records! I’d definitely go for “Victim of Changes” at some point, but “Beyond the Realms of Death”, “Run of the Mill”, or something from the 80’s like “The Hellion/Electric Eye” would be cool!

Sad Wings created the template for Priest and built them a live rep but at the time didn't sell many records at all. That came later. So for me it remains a most underrated album, possibly the most underappreciated album in heavy rock.

The best JP album. One of the best albums ever. I met Rob in a grocery store, in 2005. He was in line in front of me; I recognized his JP tats. Cool, down to earth, regular dude.

Judas Priest was the first band that I saw live in concert. It was enjoyable watching your reaction as Rob built the song and hearing the range of his vocals is always a treat. I have to say that this has always been my favorite song from them. Thanks for your great look at this song.

When I did a commentary for my Top 100 Artists list here's what I wrote for Judas Priest (which I ranked #20): "Looking back, it's hard to overstate how important Priest were in developing heavy metal from its roots in Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Purple into what it would become. They essentially took the dark, heaviness of Sabbath, the speed of Purple, and combined it with the compositional complexity of Zeppelin to create the template for all metal that came after. Priest were also the band that helped bring metal to the mainstream at the start of the 80s, and though they subsequently faltered trying to maintain that mainstream limelight, they eventually found their way back with numerous highlights in the 80s before setting a new standard for speed metal with Painkiller in the 90s." This track was from their second album, which was a quantum leap in terms of evolution from their first album, which was much more traditional hard rock. A lot of people think that this is the album where almost all of the generation of metal bands after Sabbath/Zeppelin spring from. Personally it's never been among my personal favorites because I really dislike the engineering and think most of these songs sound better live. From their 70s material I much prefer Stained Class, which is probably my favorite JP album overall. What's remarkable is that you can basically hear the entire evolution of metal throughout JP's catalog, and they even kept up with the extreme metal bands of the 80s when they released Painkiller.

Judas Priest is my favorite band of all time. Definitely do Victim of Changes, The Sinner, and Beyond The Realms of Death (Live Versions of all 3). Even today at his age, Rob Halford can really belt it out. I’ve seen them live many, many times and have never walked away disappointed.

Doug thank you so much for doing priest. They are my favorite band. Halfords voice is uncanny, it was amazing to see your reaction. There’s a show from 88 where his voice is just insane. “The sinner” from that show is one example of his seamless register and he takes the breakdown part up an octave higher than the record. Makes the paint peel off the walls haha. Also “the sentinel “ is amazing, off the turbo tour-I believe it’s simply called “live”. Blood red sky’s has another showcase of his range-def listen to the studio version. If you stay on priest you have a lot of dystopic robotic futures to trip to!
