In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm listening to Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin. I didn't realize what song it actually is until I started listening to it. It's an iconic song from rock and roll history, and we're hearing both the studio version and a live version from 1972. Enjoy!

The first album by a band that I bought with my own money, 1971, Led Zeppelin III. I drop the needle on my parents HiFi, and this comes out of the speakers. Dad wasn't home, good, mom, well she was a little startled but she started to move a little. She was a little more "adventurous" than my dad with her musical tastes. And so it all began. That live footage is from Sydney, Australia.

Earlier that same year "Communication Breakdown" was used in the comedy/action film "Small Soldiers" Led Zeppelin is said to be very picky about which movies, right down to the scene it's to be used in, they will give their blessing to for their music to be used in.

The film clip is from the Sydney Showground where the annual Royal Agricultural Show ( I’m guessing like a U.S. State Fair)is held each year at Easter in Sydney Australia. The clip was filmed for GTK (Get to Know) for the Australian Broadcast Commission, Australia’s version of the UK’s BBC. GTK was a youth program that covered News and culture for Australian youths. Occasionally they would have live in studio and out door performances.

Hi Doug. You mentioned that 'Led Zeppelin III" might be a candidate for a full-album reaction, and I 100% agree. This album was a departure from the band's first 2 albums, and I liken it to Bob Dylan's 'Bringing It All Back Home' in terms of signalling a new direction. But, whereas Dylan expanded his repertoire from acoustic to electric, Zeppelin went the other way. They also made enormous strides in terms of the various instruments played and the use of alternate guitar tuning. 'Led Zeppelin III' is certainly viewed as their acoustic album, and this is half true. Only 1 of the 5 songs on side 1 is acoustic, but all 5 songs on side 2 can be considered acoustic. Again, this is roughly equivalent to how Dylan sequenced the material on 'Bringing It All Back Home' (which always made me wonder why the folk purists where so alarmed when he played a portion of his set on electric guitar at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival ... he had already shown where his music was heading).

The live is a little longer, it’s been in several movies, like School of Rock. I believe a few commercials too, it is a song many realize they’ve heard it before. In case you didn’t know, Valhalla is where Vikings go when they die, especially if they died as a warrior in battle. They believed there were different halls in Valhalla. The thing I find odd, one other time listening to you, you kept saying oh shut up Robert. Sorry but that is Plants instrument, & he’s very talented at using it, & his voice is one of the most amazing ever. This band is the most talented group of 4 men, the writing the music, is all pure genius.

Dr. Doug complained about Robert Plant's voice - but he usually praised the band's rhythm track in particular, as well he should! Give Bonzo much love! And don't forget John Paul Jones, 'cause that would be a sin... The other three get the lion's share of the glory, but JPJ's bass, organ, and arranging skills are par excellence! They left you wanting more, Doug! Lol The best thing about the third album is it showed Zeppelin going in a new direction away from the first two. I’ve always felt like they covered familiar ground at first and just did a variation on the British rock of the sixties that Hendrix, Cream and others started. IV was the first album they made that sounded like no one else. III was a transitional album.

Thanks for this reaction and greetings from Iceland🙂 Yesterday I attended one of the greatest concerts I've ever been to in Reykjavik. The Icelandic band "The Vintage Caravan" was doing a Led Zeppelin tribute with some Icelandic singers and of course this was the first song. What a show this was and it is hard for me to believe tere's a better Zeppelin cover band in the world even though it's not their purpose. The have their own carrier going. I strongly recommend listening to these great young guys!!

It was home movies! I believe they crowd-sourced video from people attending the show and pieced it together to make the video. 😂

Also this song in F # was inspired by Mr your a better man then I with the Yardbirds, Page did a live version with them you can hear it on KZfaq. Cheers again any Zeppelin performance questions I can usually answer, not the greatest but I’ve been following them and Page from his studio days . I like watching you guys with these Zeppelin tunes especially first timers , it brings when I first got into them , I was hooked for life . Be well

Yes...there are acoustic songs from the album that paint a very 'dramatic mindscape'.....this is a beautiful sounding album...very diverse. ❤

Immigrant Song was a great concert starter. It was Led Zeppelin's habit then to start concerts with three hard rock songs in a row without a pause and in 1972 Immigrant Song was followed by Heartbreaker and Black Dog. This got the band in the groove and let the audience to let off steam. It was after these songs that Plant would greet the audience and the set list moved into songs that needed to be to be listened to. In this era concerts ended on Whole Lotta Love with a variable rock and roll medley in the middle. It rocked like the opening numbers and the rock and roll numbers such as Mary Lou and That's All Right Mama, injected a lot of fun. Encores followed. As more albums were released set lists changed - songs came in, songs dropped out. In the final concerts Whole Lotta Love sans medley was relegated to an encore and only Black Dog remained from those 1972 openers. It was performed mid concert.

That was fun, Doug. Thanks! And yes, by all means you should do an EPL with LedZep III. Lots of tasty tidbits in store for you there, and many of them are at least partly acoustic.

Back in those days, a track restricted to 2.5 mins was because it was intended to get radio plays on popular radio shows, because Singles hoping for Chart success were restricted to that time historically by radio stations. Radio shows aiming for a different non-Chart orientated audience (usually on FM) were quite prepared to play tracks of 5, 10 minutes or longer.

All that may well be true, but Zeppelin didn't release singles so it doesn't apply here.

@@MichaelRooke-pe6oy They may well have decided not to try, but what other explanation do you have for it being that particular length. How many of their other recordings were that short ?

The Viking war cry that Plant is singing is based on "Bali-Hai" from the broadway musical South Pacific - so says Robert Plant.

This album is tied with PG as my favorite LZ album. And, yes, most of the rest of the album is much more of an acoustic nature. There's also a blues song, Since I've Been Loving You, which is awesome. Immigrant Song is pretty much the most "hard rock" on the album. Out On The Tiles is, maybe, second. This album demonstrates why they generally had an acoustic set during their shows, with them all sitting on stools at the front of the stage. This album is also where they gave Roy Harper some recognition, with a slight renaming of their cover of a traditional song, Hats Off To (Roy) Harper. Roy and Jimmy did an album together in the 80s, too.

Sales of The Immigrant Song jumped by nearly 1000% after it was used in Thor: Ragnarok. It took nearly two years to secure the rights to use the song in the movie, but it paid off for all involved ... plus made the movie even better. It introduced a new generation to Led Zeppelin. Many went on to find more Zeppelin songs and because of that Led Zeppelin sales in general increased after Thor: Ragnarok.
