In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm returning to the music of Nightwish. This time, I'm listening to Dark Chest of Wonders, which opened their concert in 2013 at Wacken Open Air Arena. I love hearing their unique blend of rock, metal, and symphonic sounds...as well as the beautiful voice of lead singer Floor Jansen. Come along for the ride!

To be fair, Mr. Helvering is focusing mainly on song composition, which will very often be more easily recognizable in studio recordings. Take Ghost Love Score... Yes, Floor's vocals are amazing, but the studio version has much better mixing. You can clearly hear all the details like the synth harmonies, choir sections, etc, which are very muddy and almost not present in most of the live versions. I love the live stuff as well, but the studio versions have a lot of things going for them. Especially from a composer's standpoint.

What fascinated me at every Nightwish concert I attended was the back and forth of this energy between the band and the fans. But even at Floor's solo concerts, this is always clearly noticeable. I've never seen a fan who didn't leave the concert with shining eyes.

Floor truly is an exceptional human being and not just for her talent. She is also very down-to-earth, fully comprehending that she wouldn't be where she is without her fans. That being said, Doug, do yourself a favor and check out her debut solo album "Paragon." It'll really put a smile on your heart.

Lets dig into this Doug , Tuomas writes from observation and experiences. You know he has some well used pseudonyms for himself in lyrics with references thereto, so when you have boy, poet, dreamer, writer/song writer or ocean soul in a lyric, it is Tuomas referencing himself. The dark chest did and maybe does still exist, Tuomas found it in his grand parents attic full of toys and story books that carried his imagination off in excitement to all manner of wondrous places. Therefore throughout this song Floor sings "one with a pure heart" in a very high head voice, just as you might expect from an excited small child, that being Tuomas himself. Now look at the lyrics again and it all makes sense, Tuomas never includes notes or lyrics that are "fillers" or embellishment, it is all there for a very good reason, sometimes almost impenetrable or ambiguous. "Of the one with pure heart, once so long ago", Tuomas the Peter Pan child.

Great to see you again! And with Nightwish! NW is currently working on their new album, their tenth. In July they rehearsed and in August the recordings began. In August there were drums and guitar and at the beginning of this month, bass. Next is keys. After that, the orchestra and choir parts await in London. Last is the vocal parts. The new album will come out sometime in the spring of 2024, containing 12 songs. There will also be 3 music videos. But unfortunately, NW will not go on tour after the album is finished. Taking a break from the tour life.

There was another reaction channel where they reacted first to the album version of Ghost Love Score, then the Wacken version. Nightwish , Ladies and Gentlemen !!! They have opened the Valhalla gates , and now the Valkyrie Goddess walks among us 🤘🤩🤘!!! This is one of three great openings from them ("Dark Chest Of Wonders", "Shudder Before The Beautiful" and now "Music" intro followed by "Noise" ). At this point Floor had been with Nightwish for 10 months. Most fans had not seen her yet with Nihgtwish. And Wacken was the biggest concert for Nightwish, they were the headliner, the last performer right after Alice Cooper. Nightwish ended the concert around midnight. I'm sure the word was out about Floor beeing perfect for Nightwish. There were/are lots of fan recorded videos on YT from the early Nightwish with Floor concerts starting from the beginning of October 2012 when Floor joined Nightwish. NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

Props to the genius who thought to mic up the flamethrowing pyros. They produce a unique metallic roar, and because they're synched they become an integral part of the music. You can hear the crowd react to it with a roar of their own - I wonder if any band ever tried it before Nightwish.

"Once" also brought me into the world of "Nightwish", but because of the single "Nemo". When I then listened to the record, I absolutely fell in love with the outstanding "Creek Mary's Blood". I'm not sure if there is a performance with Floor available on KZfaq. But this song is absolutely awesome: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pdyKq8RosL-2pWQ.html At this time, I was not so impressed by "Ghost Love Score". Years later, GLS is one of the best songs I've ever heard. And all began for me with "Once". "Dark Chest Of Wonders" is a perfect opener for such a masterpiece of an album. So many great moments in one hour, this is awesome until today.

8:17 Whilst Nightwish are probably the finest (and certainly the most popular/successful) symphonic metal band, I think it's a stretch to say that what they do is unique. Therion did the 'operatic vocals and choirs with metal style and symphonic arrangements' things before them (arguably Haggard did it first) and there are quite a few other bands in the genre doing variations on this theme. Xandria, Sirenia, Therion, Epica (including harsh vocals), Tristania, After Forever, Visions of Atlantis. Many would include Within Temptation, Delain, Ayreon and others too in such a list. The point is that Nightwish don't have this genre to themselves, and whilst every band is unique in the detailed combination of people and talents (composition, vocals, arangements, musicianship) (which is perhaps what you meant here) there is also a lot they have in common. I don't know to what degree you've looked at others in this area, but they've done some amazing stuff between them and it would be great to hear your musical analysis. I know you've listened to some Ayreon, but I've not heard you do most of the others. Maybe I just missed it - you've been at this a while now...

Great reaction! This was Floor's introduction to Nightwish's huge European fan base. Floor had been with the band about 10 months here and had mostly played in North and South America. They had played a few small shows in Europe before this. Many of the fans knew Floor from her After Forever and Revamp days and were eagerly awaiting to see how Nightwish and Floor would sound together. As you can see Floor strode out on that stage, ensnared Nightwish's fans, and has never let go. Dark Chest of Wonders was also the opening song for the End of an Era concert with Tarja and there are video of her singing it on YT. I prefer Floor's version prsonally but that might be because I heard Floor's version first (that seems to happen a lot with me). Looking forward to more Nightwish.

One old concert on their dvd back in the idk how many years by now, maybe from the 90's even, was when they performed Dead to the World. Has so much energy and Marco's vocals shine. Tarja was really good too and the band was just in the optimal place. Young, ambitious, slightly raw, on top of their career with their best songs. Talking about orchestras and big artists, I get to see Steve Vai with Tampere Filharmonia orchestra, the one he recorded with last year. No matter the price, I have to see Vai at least once and this sounds special.

Hi Doug, speaking of symphonic elements and playing over back tracks with precision, have you reacted to the band Wintersun? E.g. the track "Time" would be a wonderful showcase from this other Finnish band, sharing first drummer and now also bassist with Nightwish. You have done so many time-themed compositions previously, this would go splendidly to top the list.
