IT’S FINALLY HERE!!!!! 🎉 Pentatonix changed the a cappella world forever with this arrangement. Technotonix was born! Just another example of their complex versatility that continues to this day!!!! They can literally sing anything and give it the PTX flair and upgrade. 🫶🏼

With $400, PTX made a futuristic video medley that won them the 2015 Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella. "We recorded this in a bedroom closet, we filmed it in a kitchen, and now we're Grammy winners," the group's Scott Hoying said.

Their live, microphone-less green room (room next to a bathroom :p) private performance they did quite a while ago was something to behold! I would love if you checked it out! I just thought of this. I believe in this song Avi did some Overtone singing. He can make that whoosh wind sound at the same time he sings a note. He has some videos of him showing a demonstration of overtone singing. ❤❤❤❤❤

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this yet. PTX did this during the transition period between the time they lost their recording contract they’d won on the Sing Off and the time they were signed with RCA. They were building their audience by posting videos “on the couch”. They recorded the audio in Avi and Kevin’s closet and recorded the video in their kitchen-all on a budget of $400! They came up with some extra money for additional editing, but it was still a minimum budget and they won a Grammy! Oh, one more thing… Avi was doing overtone singing on this! Amazing! It was so providential that these extraordinary people got together. Can you imagine a countertenor AND a basso profundo in the same group?! Also, The Trio had known each other since they were 8 years old and sang together in school activities from about 10! When they were in Martin High School together, they were singing in choirs and musical theater productions all the time!

Pentatonix is truly genre-less which may be why they don’t get airplay. They aren’t a pop group because they won a Grammy for arranging a medley of Daft Punk EDM songs. They aren’t an EDM group because their second Grammy was from arranging Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy a classical tune from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky. They aren’t a classical group because they won their third Grammy with country icon Dolly Parton singing a remake of Jolene a country song. They are a jack of all genres (trades) but they are truly Masters of all of it.

It’s incredible how they can recreate all the dub stepping and other technological recording effects. They filmed this in Avi’s closet and won a Grammy for it. Boy, do you have an excellent musical ear!

You are the first reactor I have seen that has mentioned the beginning background vocals...after the buy, use it, etc etc part. Many times the intricate background vocals get overlooked because of the amazing lead vocals.

All the recommendations here are great, but for analyzing arrangements, I think you'd enjoy their early original Love Again. Visually, it's nuts.

They have an original song called Love again that gives very similar vibes to this. Very techno sounding. It’s just one song not a medley and it’s their own. You should check it next to compare them. The video is also futuristic. Mitch, Avi and Kevin really shine in that one. Or watch their live off mic version of this just done in a dressing room/bathroom before one of their shows. It shows how well they can pull this off with just voices and no studio help.

When I first heard this medley I couldn't get enough of it. I'm not an EDM fan normally, but this arrangement and the talent to do it completely a cappella blew me away. I think I may have fallen in love with Avi here, too... showing up shirtless and singing lead, bassline, harmony and sound effects parts. Yes, that was him doing the wind sounds (like he does in Bohemian Rhapsody). Love that I am hearing even more with your analysis. Thank you for sharing so much with us. 🥰

You need to watch the live version from a green room. It was a private performance for Make a Wish. The person it was for posted it. Kevin and Avi don't come through as clearly but the Trio are amazing. You can hear it with no studio effects at all, not even miked up.

It helps me really appreciate not only how well Pentatonix understands musicality and chord arrangement, but also the difficulty of them even being able to sing some of those more "crunchy" chords. It's easy to find your note in a major chord; not super easy when you are trying to sing a chord with all sorts of conflicts.

While you are still doing their early work, may I recommend “Can’t hold us”, just to watch for yourself if you don’t have time for an analysis. It is such a fun video,and always cheers me up. I sometimes skip the discussions between the reactor reacting to the video, but I enjoy your dissections and explanations.

There is a phone recorded live concert video of Avi singing in overtones. He sings a steady base note that reminds you of bagpipes and then sings the melody of a song. His ability is pretty insane. Google Avi singing The Lion Sleeps Tonight.

Avi wasn't the only one having trouble with the contacts, that's why Kevin is wearing the sunglasses - he couldn't tolerate the lenses at all.

I would include Voiceplays cover of Nothing Else Matters as Grammy worthy too.

Most of the Pentatonix reactors I've seen started with Hallelujah and got hooked from there. I'm eagerly awaiting your analysis of that one. Over the Rainbow is fantastic as well, but no video to go with it.

Have you seen the just-released Pearl Fishers duet with Dimash and Placido Domingo? Dimash is impressive and Domingo still has it. Thank goodness he switched to baritone roles at the end of his career. Not sure if you want to throw opera into the mix but there seem to be a lot of people here who appreciate good singing, and the Dimash Dears can't get enough of Dimash's versatility. It's pretty amazing. Btw, another vote for you to react to the stripped down version of the Daft Punk medley, maybe for your next PTX reaction while the produced version is fresh in your mind. A rare opportunity to hear them with no enhancement whatsoever. Love your reactions and the talent you're attracting to your channel.

I’ve been going through all your PTX reactions this afternoon and love your input and observations. I now have a few recommendations I’m not sure anyone else has suggested. One of the older covers Aha! originally by Imogen Heap is really good but there’s a specific live performance everyone always talks about. It’s their live performance in Singapore (uploaded by Shane Nicole) that’s just absolutely wild. Avi breaks the speakers and Mitch goes absolutely nuts because he was jet lagged so he drank a few Red Bulls and they all hit him at once 😂 Another really good video is their Bohemian Rhapsody where you learn Mitch might actually be a guitar that transfigured itself into a human. And there’s also Mitch and Scott’s duo (called Superfruit) where they covered Defying Gravity. Really funny video and guaranteed to blow your socks off
