The IBF World Super Middleweight title fight between two of the best pound for pound fighters of the era. This fight would propel Roy Jones Jr into boxing super stardom. More info below...
James Toney was the IBF World Super Middleweight champion. He was undefeated in 46 fights with 44 wins, 29 by KO and 2 draws. He was the number 2 ranked pound for pound fighter in the world according to The Ring magazine and he was a 6-5 favorite to win. He was a former IBF and IBC World Middleweight champion before moving up in weight and winning the IBF Super Middleweight title from Iran Barkley in 1993. Toney had successfully defended his Super Middleweight title 3 times already however there were rumors Toney was struggling to make the Super Middleweight limit and he entered training camp weighing over 200lbs!
Roy Jones Jr was the third ranked best pound for pound fighter in the world and the current IBF World Middleweight champion. He had beaten Bernard Hopkins in 1993 to win the belt and in his last outing had successfully defended it against Thomas Tate. Jones, like Toney, was also undefeated with a 26-0 record and although he had beaten some experienced challengers he was yet to be known as the boxing legend he would become.
Roy Jones was in complete control for a majority of the fight. He was landing more punches and was the noticeably quicker of the two. Toney was still able to land some big shots but he could never pin Roy down long enough to take advantage. In round 3, Roy would catch Toney off guard and off balance while taunting and put him on the canvas. Toney was embarrassed more than hurt when he got to his feet and by the end of 12 rounds Roy had earned himself a deserved unanimous decision.
Roy Jones Jr would eventually move up to the light heavyweight ranks and become one of the best, if not THE best, light heavyweight champions of all time. In 2003 he even won the WBA World Heavyweight title from John Ruiz. In 2009 Roy Jones would try add a World Cruiser weight title to his list of achievements by challenging IBO champion Danny Green, but lost surprisingly by 1st round TKO. As of 2015 Roy Jones Jr was still boxing and looking for another cruiser weight world title shot...
James Toney immediately moved up to the light heavyweight ranks following this loss however his first fight at the new weight didn't go exactly as planned when Montell Griffin beat him by majority decision over 12 rounds. He quickly regained his form however and ended up winning the vacant WBU Light Heavyweight title in 1995, the vacant IBO World Cruiser weight title in 1997, the vacant IBA Super Cruiser weight title in 2001 and the IBF World Cruiser weight title in 2003. In late 2003 Toney made the permanent leap into the heavyweight division beating Evander Holyfield by TKO in his first outing and going on to capture the IBA and IBU World Heavyweight titles. As of 2015 James Toney is still boxing at heavyweight and it's hard for me to even imagine him at one point weighing 160lbs...

as i watch this fight 25 years later I can't help but to notice that Toney did not use his jab enough. He should have been doubling and tripling his jab all night to get inside of Jones and push him back up to the ropes where Roy was vulnerable. Jones was masterful punching backwards. One of the few guys who could knock you out going backwards. If he's on the ropes you take that trait away.
@Kaikojo
@Kaikojo 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe. I'm much more familiar with RJJ than Toney, but RJJ nullified a lot of jabs with the leaping left. Normally the jab would be faster so you had to time the hook, but RJJ's flying hook was ridiculously fast AND he could time it, so it acted as a check hook. For southpaws, he'd switch to the straight with head movement to counter the jab. I could be wrong, but I fee like while other fighters' try to establish the jab early, RJJ's game plan is to dismantle the jab early.

I love the way he'll move to the one side of his opponent and come around with a wicked hook on the opposite side. Or one way Roy uses to reposition himself is a punch to the stomach as he moves in close enough to turn his opponent around leaving Jones in a more advantageous position.

At 26:40 Toney whirls around with a left hook that barely missed Jones, the crowd reacted because it was an unusual punch that nearly clipped Jones. Right after at 26:46 watch the ref Richard Steele come into center screen with a big smile on his face. He was entertained by the punch himself.

Bruh I’m new to boxing and have Floyd Maywheathered myself down Mike Tyson Lane, took stops in Jack Johnonville, visited Cesar Chavez drive very briefly, stopped by the Ryan Garcia apartment complex, and the Adrian Bronner projects. There i met Tank Davis and have settled there for now. But while enjoying all of Davis’s fights i got bored and watched Roy Jones Jr. and i have fallen in love. This man’s defense and quickness was other level. Then to make that rap song and come out to Thuggish Rugged Bone in a damn suit is INSANE. I wish i was old enough to seen his and Tyson’s primes

James toney until this day has never gotten the credit he deserves. James Tony was literally of one of one type of boxer. The man never trained The conventional way by the way. His way of training was sparring hundreds of rounds. That man was a monster. You never seen him get hurt ever In his entire career. And he never moved around in the ring with his feet like that slight head movements a true practitioner of the Philly shell..James Tony was a BEAST!!!!! KEEP IN MIND THIS IS WHEN ROY JONES WAS IN HIS PRIME. JAMES TONY AGAINST ROY JONES IN HIS PRIME HAD ROY JONES JUST LOOKING LIKE AN AVERAGE FIGHTER. THIS WAS AN AVERAGE FIGHT

This fight was a testament to how good Tony was. Prime Jones obliterated everyone he fought. While Tony lost this fight, he looked the best of any other fighter that faced Prime Jones and was one (if not the only) to not be utterly obliterated. He actually even had good moments and displayed the best defense of any other against Prime Jones. Jones was just on a different level even for him. But you see the reason in this fight that Jones named him as one of the best fighters he faced.
