Classic Game Room HD reviews AFTER BURNER II for Sega Genesis / Mega Drive! Released in 1990 this is one of the best games on the Sega Genesis and created by master game designer Yu Suzuki, who previously designed Out Run and Hang On! This CGRHD review of After Burner II has gameplay footage recorded from After Burner 2 showing Afterburner 2 game play of the F-14 fighter jet blowing away waves of enemy jets and helicopters (even though the Afterburner II game cartridge shows an F-15 Eagle instead of an F-14 Tomcat.) Do you like Top Gun on the NES? This game puts it to shame. Yu Suzuki's arcade masterpiece from 1987 makes an explosive appearance on the Genesis with smooth, colorful gameplay and excellent controls. The music is some of the best music ever heard on the Genesis and this entire cartridge of awesomeness can be had for a few bucks today providing years of enjoyment. If you like arcade style flight combat games then you will LOVE After Burner II from Sega for the Genesis and Megadrive. 2:43 one of the best game music tracks ever, can't stop listening to it. I love how in Afterburner Climax for arcade you can pick the original soundtrack too

Agreed. The Final Countdown was a great movie. That movie is so old that Martin Sheen looks like Charlie and Kirk Douglas looks like Michael. I also liked the fact that it was a science fiction movie and not a friggin romance movie where a guy loses his balls after his friend dies and turns into a crybaby.

You can turn on the autofire in options, but I agree the port should have been better. They should have had more different terrain and included the plane landing sequences. Outrun used twice the cartridge size and they should never have put After Burner II on a mere 4mbit cart.

Nice review. It looks really good despite the lower quality recording. I have to say, I had a problem recording Tex Murphy 3 and had to use my dvd-recorder. It did bother me that the recoding quality took a hit but at least I could actually get it to without the glitches.

Oh man, my local funworks had this game. It was so cool because you climbed inside a cockpit simulator that tilted left or right by how you moved the joystick. After a few years it broke and it didn't move anymore, but it was still my favorite game in the arcade.

Ah yes, stuck here sick at home, waiting on my stupid covid test, and binge watching old Classic Game Room reviews. This game was a favorite of mine in arcades, master system and eventually on Genesis and despite playing all three of them a million times my Dad could never remember it's name and still calls it 'F-14 Tom Bomb'.. to this day. So I've adopted the habit.. nice review on an old favorite of mine, F-14 Tom Bomb!

Two things after burner related" 1.) There's after burner: black falcon for the PSP. Its an awesome game! its everything that makes afterburner great on the PSP and more! 2.) Afterburner Climax, a SEGA arcade released in 2006, IS coming to the 360 and PSN this Spring. Thats a great game and plays homage to this after burner.

In fact, it was a Top Gun game, but without the licence. The first After Burner was released after the great success of the movie. You can see photos during the demontration which clearly shows "Maverick" in the cockpit and some shots showing the Tomcats from outside.

my childhood in one video . maaaaaan when i played this on my sega master system 2 , i was blown away with how fast it was and responsive . the music is just an other master piece .

This is an excellent game, and for european collectors, this game works on pal consoles too, so you can get the ntsc version, it will work even with trms consoles. :D

Absolutely, the 32X version was pretty close to being arcade perfect... it really was one of the better home ports of this game... though I think there may have also been an arcade perfect port on the Saturn as well (which is kinda rare, I think?)... and Shenmue II had a playable version of the game too, in one of the arcades. There is also an arcade perfect version of Space Harrier on the 32X as well.

You should try finding a scart RGB cable for your genesis. You might need a RGB -> Component converter, but the quality is significantly better than even S-Video.

If you like this, you really need to get your hands on the 32X version, called After Burner Complete. It KILLS this version graphically and sound wise, and doesn't make your guns fire constantly.

You should really try the Game "Gun Metal" for the classic xbox (may work on 360). Its a game with a Jet which can transform into a giant Roboter with mass destruction and lots of fun. :)

As simple as this game is, it's a ton of fun and I played it just about every day back then. The only thing about it that really bugs me is the autofiring machine gun. It eats up a sound channel making constant repetitive noise and seems "cheap" since there's no consequence (no ammo, overheating, or anything). They did that because there weren't enough buttons (the 6 button controller didn't exist yet). You can remap the controls to make the guns manual, but then you lose something else. They could have given the option to use Start for an action button and lose the Pause feature. I think it should also have limited ammo, regardless of whether it was like that in the arcade.

An arcade style level like Afterburner II would have been cool if it had appeared in this years jet fighter game, H.A.W.X or After Burner II Online Arcade. Actually I can see SEGA doing this since they are milking every drop of cash out of these vintage genres.

Yes there were a few good 32X games, Doom wasn't really one of them, it was very stripped down from the other versions. The others yeah definitely.
