The pastel green t-shirt is unobtrusive in a style which contrasts nicely with the richness of dust jackets and paperbacks in the background.

Such a great video, I didn't realiser how many of the names are related to Roman and Greek history and mythology. So cool. Thanks for putting all the information together, that must have been A LOT of work!

Such a great video. Love how you combine your passions and knowledge of ancient myths /history and popular book(s). Such an interesting topic, did not realize even half of these references and names when reading the books or watching the movies. Makes me appreciate the writing in The Hunger Games even more if that is possible.

I always somehow thought that people in Panem chose their names themselves. Wasn't it mentioned somewhere in the Mockingjay with Tigris? Anyway, amazing video, thank you so much!

It would be amazing if you could follow this up with an interview with Suzanne Collins to discuss her inspirations behind some of these characters. I know she's probably a really busy person to get a hold of though. Excellent video!

Aha I mean that would be amazing but I definitely imagine she's probably far too important and busy.

I always find Seneca Crane’s namesake interesting because the ancient Roman Seneca who was a playwright, philosopher, and tutor to the Emperor Nero, was forced to commit suicide after becoming entangled in a conspiracy to assassinate Nero (though it is likely he wasn’t involved in it at all). Seneca Crane is also forced to commit suicide in The Hunger Games because his role in the conspiracy to bring down Panem as game-maker is also unclear. Another is Plutarch who was a Greek biographer writing in Greek under the Roman Empire. His Parallel Lives always compare a Greek with a Roman, almost like he’s pitching one against the other in an arena to establish who was better of the two, and ultimately to establish whether the Greeks or the Romans were better (this is how I interpret Plutarch’s Lives, at least). In this sense, we don’t know where his loyalties lie in a similar way we don’t know where the loyalties of Plutarch Heavensbee lie. ahhh i just love the hunger games so much and suzanne collins has put so much thought and research into naming so many of the characters and building the world of panem. it’s just incredible and deserving of all the praise and more.

Ive been rereading the books recently & im on Mockingjay rn, there is actually a part where Plutarch explains the origin of the name Panem, - Panem et Circenses, to Katniss, page260 if anyone is curious, how there was a place called Rome, and points to similarities to the Games, so with all the roman inspired names in the Capitol, I think that was where Collins tells us theyre prolly educated in ancient history? Or at least know somewhat of it

This video is so perfect because I’m currently reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and re-reading Mythos. Couldn’t have come at a better time! Also - do you think that Suzanne could’ve chosen the name Titus in reference to Titus Andronicus and the infamous cannibalistic pie scene?
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 4 ай бұрын
VERY possibly. I think a lot of the names are a blending of classical figures and Shakespeare so some may not even intentionally be classical choices but rather shakespearean. I have read Titus Andronicus but my Shakespeare really isn't as good as my ancient history aha.

I wonder why Caesar Flickerman was named after Caesar he seems important enough for his name to have meaning but I can't seem to figure it out
@JeansThoughts
@JeansThoughts 4 ай бұрын
Maybe that's the intention. Give one of the most recognisable names to someone with less power. Then again Flickerman is a public figure like Julius Caesar I guess aha.
