I love Allis-Chalmers tractors. My grandpa had a WD at his cabin and my family has a couple at our farm. I remember riding them when I was younger. I’ll own one someday. I like his advice too. Best part is never ever tell the wife how much you spent. I already know that one very well!

Good way to get your tractor restoration project put on hold was to let the wife know the cost. Unless she's just as interested and involved as you. And even then, you might end up on the couch now and again. If not straight up out sleeping with the hounds. Knew of a couple wives that threatened to feed their hubby to the pigs. If you're gonna restore tractors, don't own pigs...

I remember on grandfather's farm when I was young. A wc, two wd, a wd-45 and a d17. Lot of time I spent in the field with him.

I rode one a lot of hours when I was 11-16 years old. The engine finally wore out and was rebuilt using a D-17 crank and it was really powerful for a small tractor after that. I remember that it used a lot less gas than a 720 John Deere doing the same work. The only thing I remember that most people didn't like was that the hydraulics were slow compared to other brands.

Allis-Chalmers may have been better than I gave credit for. Must have done a very respectable job on the farms.

Allis-Chalmers was, at one time,, in many places, THE tractor to own. Sadly, no longer. If I can ever save enough to own a bit of land where I need a small tractor, I will be in search of either a WD or WD45 to restore and use. I will, hopefully, own another AC tractor.

My great grandfather had TB during ww2 so he couldn’t fight but the US government sold us a WD45 and some other equipment. My grandfather who was born a few weeks after the war, remembers driving that thing into the ground in the 50s and they needed to sell it because of hard times.

Having driven most of the 35- 50hp tractors of the 1945- 85 era, the Allis WD45 was the best combination of weight/power/economy and use out there IF you didn't need a bucket on it- gear shifting was not it's strong suit. That, the absence of a really great diesel option, and the general acceptance of 3pt. hitch over the Snap Coupler left them way under rated by most potential buyers.

Drove the Diesel WD45 in the 60s as a high school kid. In some soils this tractor could pull 4 bottoms.

What is the benefit of the plow blades being vented like they are here.

They work better in heavy clay- much better. It's a shame you can't get them anymore....

Well, this video WAS shot in Clay County, Iowa! I had the same question about the vented plow blades. My grandpa had a AC WD, I used to ride along sitting on the fender toolbox and driving it while grandpa, uncle and dad picked bales, "just push or pull the lever when I yell at you"! ha

The WD's were basically the same tractor as the WD45. The only difference really was the horsepower. The WD had less than the WD45. The WD's only came with a 2 bottom reversible plow, while WD45's had a 3 bottom plow. Most of the 3 bottoms weren't reversible, so you had to always drop the plow at the same end of the field, while the reversible plow, you could plow both ways, by reversing the plow on the trip back to the other end. You had to reverse the plow, so all your furrows were turned the same direction. The reversible plow was basically two, two bottom plows, but with one set upside down, on top of the other on a round bar, so you could rotate the plows at each end of the field, to plow the other direction. Going down field, the plow turned the soil to the right, going back, after rotating the plow, it turned the soil to the left. So all the furrows were turned towards the same side of the field, all the time. I owned a 1948 WD, for several years. Had the original reversible 2 bottom plow, a ditch clearing blade, a flat blade, and a live PTO that ran both the old mower deck and the 1938 John Deere sickle bar mower. Had to replace the rear wheels, due to corrosion from the corrosive tire fill liquid, but they also had the sliding set-up. Never quite got her fully restored. Got her mechanically sound, and everything working, but never got the time or money to get her painted. Mowed a lot of properties on my weekends. Old JD sickle bar would pull out the chola cactus on the property, the rear blade and rake would pile them up so I could burn them. Then the early model Bush Hog mower would finish mow the lot and take out the sagebrush the sickle bar left. Think I had a 5 foot deck on that old Bush Hog. Still love seeing A/C tractors in good condition. First antique tractor I ever owned, and I loved having it. Built my pole barn around being able to use the rear drop blade to clean the horse stalls once a week, without using a shovel.
