As a resident of Mass. I had no idea there was a train to the cape. Maybe that's half the problem. Residence don't even know about it.

Fun fact Massachusetts is the only state with rail service in every (mainland) county, with the two island counties accessible by ferry from Hyannis.

Yup, that's called a cranberry bog! Besides Massachusetts, Wisconsin, New Jersey, and Oregon are the leading cranberry-producing states, with Wisconsin harvesting over 60 percent of the country's cranberries. However the largest cranberry grower in both the country and the world is A.D. Makepeace (one of the original founders of Ocean Spray) who's actually based in Wareham! The company farms some 1,750 acres of bog in Carver, Middleborough, Plymouth, Rochester and Wareham! The type of passenger car at 7:08 is a C1! It looks like a LIRR C3 because the C3 was based off it! Basically, these C1s were meant to be for the LIRR and were built by the Tokyu Car Corporation. They were designed by Comeng (an Australian company) who worked with Mitsui, and it was one of their last projects before they ceased to exist in 1990. The reason Comeng didn't follow through with building was because of the instability of their owner Australian National Industries. So they sold the design to Mitsui, and then Mitsui sold it to Tokyu. These C1s were supposed to be part of an experiment to see if they could do a one-seat ride on the partially electrified Port Jeff Branch (not electrified between Huntington and Port Jeff) using dual-modes into Penn. If the experiment was successful (which it was), they'd get a larger order. Which ended up becoming the C3 based on an updated design thanks to feedback. The C3s, however, were built by Kawasaki.

Construction of a Cape Cod canal was first considered by Myles Standish of the Plymouth Colony in 1623. In 1697, the General Court of Massachusetts considered the first formal proposal to build the canal but took no action. A canal was built called Jeremiah's Gutter but this only lasted until the late 1800s. In June 1909, construction finally began for a working canal under the direction of August Belmont Jr.'s Boston, Cape Cod & New York Canal Company using designs by engineer William Barclay Parsons. The canal was first used in July 1914. In 1928, the US government purchased the canal for $11.4 million (over 200 million today) as a free public waterway, and $21 million was spent between 1935 and 1940 increasing the canal's width to 480 feet and its depth to 32 feet. It became the widest sea-level canal of its time. The bridge was constructed beginning in 1933 by the Public Works Administration for the US Army Corps of Engineers, which operates both the bridge and the canal. It is indeed currently the second longest vertical lift bridge in the US, with the longest being the Arthur Kill Vertical Lift Bridge between Elizabeth, NJ and Staten Island. Though when it was completed, it was the longest vertical lift span in the world.

They should bring back the Amtrak Cape Codder.

The vintage car show happens every Father's Day, which means you were on the same train I took last year! I did stay longer and took the train back to Boston.

We had a great experience on the CapeFlyer a few weekends ago! It was super unique to be riding on what felt like a Commuter Rail train, but with a cafe car and a car with actually comfortable seats (the former first class car). It was certainly more than worth the $10 round-trip! Although the cafe car has a limited menu and is a bit pricey, we found the food on offer quite fresh and delicious. We also used the Hyannis Trolley to get around and spend a good part of the day at that beach.

It should be possible to bicycle (~50 miles) from Hyannis to Provincetown in time to catch the 3:00 PM departure of the Provincetown - Boston ferry. The Cape Cod Rail Trail only goes as far north as Wellfleet, so the portion further on to Provincetown would be via public roads.

MBTA Should have bought the line all the way to Provinence Town and then it would make it easier to get to PTown and they could do a train to Pride

The MBTA studied extending daily commuter to service from Lakeville to Bourne back in 2021… and then they did absolutely nothing. More frequency to the cape is desperately needed, and unfortunately it doesn’t seem like it will change anytime soon

Have I ever told you my horror story with the CapeFlyer? It was the Friday before Memorial Day 2016, a week before I graduated high school. School was a half-day, so I decided "why not" and went into Boston to ride the train down and out, which would make the connection to the last train out on my home line. Around Quincy Adams, the locomotive breaks down due to IIRC a vacuum tube leak and we had to be pushed all the way to North Lakeville, where a spare F40 from Rochester pulled us the rest of the way to Hyannis and pushed us back to South Station on the return trip. The kicker? That unit, 1056, had just been refurbished and this was its first revenue run out of the shop. We got to Hyannis 70 minutes late, I missed my connection out of North Station, and had my mother pick me up and drive me home, where I walked through the door at 3:15am Would do it again lmao

I rode a similar train from the the Braintree T station to Hyannis in the mid 1980s. Can't remember if it just ran one summer or more. Also they served food and drinks in one of the cars. Spent a nice day visiting downtown Hyannis.

Great video! When did you film this? I would also say that the flyer is better if you can find a window that is not filthy. I took the flyer a few weeks ago and it had the same locomotives and set so wondering if we took it on the same day just different directions

I’ve lived in Mass my entire life, taken the train in and out of Boston for conventions for a couple years shy of a decade, walk my dogs to my town’s purple line station almost daily, have gone to the Cape and Vineyard a few times, and had every birthday from as early as I remember until I was in high school (my boyfriend doesn’t like water) at Water Wizz, the water park on the line I genuinely have never heard of this in my life. As other comments have said, I don’t have a clue how this is so under-advertised to locals. Would make a day trip to the Cape a lot easier, though getting to and/or parking in Boston that early sounds like a pain

This would still beat having to sit through traffic approaching the Bourne/Sagamore bridges.

Fall/Winter/Days with bad weather, it takes 45 minutes to drive from Cambridge to visit my parents in Plymouth. Spring /Summer/ Nice days it takes just under three hours.

This seems like a nice service! I'll keep this in mind for when my s/o and I visit Boston next year. Would be amazing if MBTA ran this daily instead of just weekends, I could imagine it being very popular. Love the addition of the cafe' car

Thanks for another interesting video. I always thought this train would do well especially since the road traffic is so bad to get to the cape in summer. However the limited schedule and minimal public transit on the cape does hurt its appeal. At least you found that local fake trolley to get you to the beach. It is nice they do have the bicycle and snack bar car since it is a long trip for a commuter train.

7:07 old LIRR C1 (predecessor to the C3) coaches! Been on those once. Funny enough Cape Cod Central uses a few other ex-LIRR single level commuter coaches for their dinner train operation.

I remember I took this train for the heck of it back in 2014 when they put the MP36PH-3C’s on them. They’re supposed to be getting rebuilt at the moment, but it’s unclear where they are and what’s gonna happen to them.

That was a great video, and the journey looked like a great deal of fun. This is certainly the way forward for the American Railway company, it was great that they had a buffet car on it, lets hope that it did a good business. It was great to see Kalkidan, she seems to be great company and is always so cheerful.
