One important note: back in the early part of the 20th century, Dayton was a hub for inventors and manufacturers. Not only the Wright Brothers, but Charles Kettering (inventor of the electric starter for cars) and John Patterson (National Cash Register or NCR) had their operations there. Well into the 1970's, Dayton was home to Delco, Frigidaire, Chrysler Airtemp, NCR, DAP, and a host of smaller manufacturers.

I went to college in Dayton in the mid- to late 1970's. Students could ride the trolley buses for free and we often took them into downtown to shop at Rikes or Elder-Beerman. The old buses had a small mechanical arm of the left side that the driver would swing out when the bus was pulling away from the curb and back into traffic. The little arm had the world "Please" painted on it. It was the most polite "turn signal" I have ever seen.

I’m currently an intern at DART, in their Materials Management department(warehouse holding all their vehicles parts and materials that are shipped and received to and from other DART warehouses) and having been to other cities with massive rapid transit programs it’s weird. Dallas is the tip of the spear here in Texas and is really really trying to make the most of what it’s given. Currently DART is constructing the Silver Line which hopes to connect Plano to DFW, it would be a commuter train. Although this expansion is going ahead, DART is facing budget cuts from its member cities. If these budget cuts go ahead the consequences would be devastating to DART. DART also had plans of continuing its development of a subway system in Dallas, but has apparently been placed on hold. It’s a unique situation, especially with the sheer amount of freeways there are, but I hope DART pulls through.

i actually helped work on some restoration and repair of the Overlake Village and Redmond Technology stations before they opened! specifically the wayfinder stones on the platforms as well as the yellow tiles and some of the large stone pavers. really cool to see people appreciating and interacting with some of the work i've done :)

The people that complain about buses taking over the trolley lines / trolley buses (always pointing the finger at GM too) fails to realize or has no clue that GM (or Ohio's own Flxible) didnt need to do much to convince city leadership to buy their buses. The GM buses practically sold themselves as did the Flxibles (more so the GM buses) . People forget that back then things were built to last and those older buses were no exception. Those buses had no issue running 25-30 years.

bucket list (no order): 1) the Qinghai - Tibet line and Sichuan - Tibet line (when the latter fully opens) 2) the Iranian legendary route you mentioned 3) Amtrak Coast Starlight past Mount Shasta 4) Johor Bahru to the farthest possible distance in Portugal. My mom did Beijing to Moscow (part of that route) in the 1980s and nothing will ever top that for her.

It's not really "lost". That's the old 52-Allentown Line (later renamed Brown Line). I rode it a handful of times when my ex lived above SHJ, and hardly ANYONE used it. Wasn't worth the ATU Pay to keep a schedule running all the time, so now it's just s Detour Route whenever the Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is undergoing repairs. Overbrook line is not disused. That's the Blue Line that goes down along Saw Mill Run Boulevard before going into the South Hills.

Look at the tomato, isn't it sad? It can't taste good. I see what you did there 😉 No comprendo (IYKYK)😆 I rode Acela last summer from BAL-DC just so the check it off the list. For the difference in price, I could never justify the extra cost compared to a Regional or MARC but it is what it is 🤷🏿‍♂️

Born and raised in Dayton, and until I moved to LA I had only lived in cities with Tollybus service - Dayton, Seattle, SF. They’re fantastic and we need more of them. Also, they have an old SFMTA Bus?!?! That 80-year old one is very clearly an old Muni Christmas Coach….

There's a survey running right now. Should the railroad run to Cleveland, I guess ending in The Flats. I don't think you'll ever see a National Park running commuter trains through it.

Amtrak almost needs something like the Standard Premium seats that Avanti West Coast in the UK has. You get the first class seat, just without the meal for a substantial discount over a first class ticket.

I still miss the wood paneling, but the nice mix of yellow and orange paint on the interior makes up for it in my opinion. They should have had a dc-style “stand back doors closing” announcement in my opinion.
