This is a talk I did in 2020 to explain what it feels like to have a disorder of the brain like AUD. I hope it will help people understand addiction with more compassion for the sufferer.

I’m a member of the Thrive Community and have just been prescribed my prescription of Naltrexone. Your Ted-Talk led me to Katie’s shorts on KZfaq and that led me to knowing I would one day contact a doctor to get put on the medication. Thank you so much for being brutally honest and open. Thank you for using your platform for this. People are so looked down upon for suffering from AUD, and it isn’t our fault. We don’t deserve this. But we can change it. We can try to take back control. We don’t have to be defined by this. We don’t have to stay this way. It struck me hard when you said “compulsive”. You said it a couple of times. I never thought of AUD as compulsive, but I do refer to myself as being OCD. I’ve always been stressed out if things are out of place, even ever so slightly. So to think of my AUD as being compulsive … completely makes sense. I want it all or nothing. It’s never have one single drink. It’s always drink it all or don’t drink anything at all.

Yes, I know… me too. Drink it all…or drink none.

Good work! I'm spreading the gospel. I cry watching your videos too. I lost 3 friends to AUD. Now I'm seeking out people who need help.

Something that stuck with me, positivity is not the opposite or solution to negativity. The opposite or solution to negativity (in any form) is warmth - a helping hand, a kind understanding word...

I know two people that have had(?) addictions to alcohol and other things, that are very close.... Thank you for this talk because I need to watch for resurgence and I have you're efforts to help galvanize my efforts to keep people safe. I have your biography, I have yet to get thru the trauma in the first 2 chapters just cause it hits close to home....

So much I could say having worked in MI/SUD for over thirty years. So many I tried to help with so little success given our understanding and treatment regimes. If I wasn't a failure as a treator, I don't feel I was successful at least where SUD treatment is concerned. I hope the science you speak of can succeed where people like myself could not. Change is needed. Thank-you, for offering an alternative. Thank-you, too, for your vulnerability in sharing your own story. This video is life-giving. This video offers hope. I am grateful, Claudia.

Powerful message. I had two addicts in my life. The first was my mom. She struggled with both alcohol and opioids and lost her life to them at the age of 58, back in 2005. Unfortunately, her addictions turned her into an abusive parent, so we never had a good relationship. The second was my late husband. Because he wasn't like my mother in how he dealt with his alcohol addiction, I didn't see it until it was too late. It didn't help that he lied to both me and his therapists about how much he was really consuming, and I'm pretty sure that played a part in his eventual death by suicide. It really is an awful disease, and I'm glad to know there are some science-based options to help treat it now. Thanks for sharing.

❤ Thank you so much for your kind comments. Yes, this is an absolutely horrible disease to be involved with in any way. Eventually, we will turn the corner and the treatment using TSM will be a household name. Best we can do is spread the word. Peace.

A truly alcoholic man would get off any medication to drink again, unless he was in some form of mental and spiritual Recovery . It is a three fold addiction . Any medication is just the beginning ,not the cure.I am sober 33 years. Medication that just stops his drinking,creates a dry alcoholic. That is only partial sobriety .
@5Ring6 ай бұрын
" a dry alcoholic." The same thing AA and traditional "Therapy" produce. Only those people still have the mental compulsion. MY Dad quit for 16 years, yet, near his death, all he could think about was a 12pack of beer. Nobody wants to be that person. Sinclair Method patients are one step beyond them and more likely to succeed in prolonged sobriety. 78% success rate vs 15% for the preacher method you are touting.
@virgilkirschner57173 ай бұрын
Correct my friend, quitting use of alcohol is not the whole picture. There is more work to be done. Thank you for your contribution to a better life.❤

I tried drinking with this method and ended up in a psych hospital with suicidal tendencies. That was a week after alcohol poisoning while drinking on Naltrexone. I wouldn’t Recommend this method for real alcoholics and people struggling with mental health issues.
