I got reminded of a similar story by my father. He was new in a company in a cubicle office. And while he walked around getting to know everyone, he saw a nail in the middle of one of those fabric walls. And he thought: "Strange, let's pull that out". Well, it turned out that this single nail kept the wall attached to the side of another. The whole wall tumbled over and took the two other walls left and right with it. The support feet of one wall was put under a heavy file cabinet, and the weight just tumbled that one over, crashing into an office chair where the lady from accounting just sat five minutes before. Suddenly, there was a lot of open space around my father, and he stood there, petrified, with the nail in his hand, while everybody was looking at him. p.s.: No, my father's name is not Boris.

One problem is that contractors pay Taco Bell wages. There's a painting contractor here where I live that thinks $19/hr is a good starting wage for a Lead Painter.... Idiot!!!!!!! I can make $20/hr at Taco Bell on the night shift and not have to buy tools, not work in bad weather, not having some idiot telling me to get moving on nailing down a roof deck two stories high in 100f temperatures, not have to risk cutting myself or driving a nail in my foot or smashing a thumb. When companies pull their heads out of their collective asses then they'll find people they'll want to keep.
@ThePhoenix1986 күн бұрын
Yes, most companies are greedy and want to minimise their costs (wages) to maximise their profits. But remember they're competing for business from people who want something for nothing; that's you and me who want a $30,000 product for $20,000 or less. Obviously there are exceptions, but in general the price is driven by the market, which is driven by the customer.

Even more stupid (way more!) are tier 10 playing in a tiny shitty tier 3 map that used to be restricted to tier 3 because it's a joke of a map. But since WankerGoats decided to remove lots of good maps where players had to use their head, ruined most of those good maps left and introduced only a few mediocre direct confrontation maps, they had to remove restrictions of tier 3 maps so they have enough of them.

Hey Claus, that's a Great story, and it really does demonstrate Boris's single-mindedness-not in nailing down his lunch box, of course. But in these exact situations where you only have a hammer but the job requires no nails and a "softer" impact, you simply find a scrap piece of soft wood like pine, put the scrap between the work and the hammer, and let the scrap piece take all the impacts from the hammer. Of course, that requires thinking minutely outside the box/hammer, and therein lies Boris's problem.

Just write in the insurance papers: One of the workers (Boris) found a nail in the floor and pulled it up without telling about it. A leaking hot water pipe was found later, when we got back to laying new floor in that corner. I once found a nail in my bathroom floor. It went through a 40 mm drain pipe which undermined the shower stall floor... One day it broke, and I went through that shower stall floor. A foot sized hole 20 cm deep and me getting a bad knee. Had to dig up the bathroom floor to replace the pipes, the concrete floor, the floor tiles, the missing sand beneath it, the broken sewer drain below that and install new bathroom fixtures. It cost me 40000 Danish Kroner aka. 8000$ and the scare of my life.

If there is something I know is that in the economic model we have in the west there is never really a shortage of good workers there is just a shortage of good workers for the price that you want. Worked in fast food during college and the placed I worked payed by far the best and was competing with McDonald's somehow and was the only other place with a line during meal times due to being able to be picky about the workers and be able to send people that aren't up to the task away. I thought the Boris story was hilarious but also frustrating. I am now retired from skilled trades (sheet metal and HVAC) and have seen my share of workers who said they understood how to do certain jobs and just destroyed the project. We only did commercial, so instead of a few hundred grand, when major mistakes were made they were multi-million dollar eff-ups. It only took one before the contractor I mostly worked for stopped using labor that couldn't speak/read English. To get around discrimination lawsuits, he changed the eligibility to work for his company to "Must have a high school diploma or higher (or GED) issued from North America". That also fixed the problems with math-related screwups... until we got a Canadian who read the measurement in millimeters instead of inches. We needed a 48"x36"x60" set of rectangular ductwork (40 pieces) and this guy made the tiniest duct I have ever seen: 48mm x 36mm x 60mm, and he made all 40 in one day out of 18 gauge steel. What got our attention was when he came to the front shop and said, "All done, but why did you need such tiny duct made from such thick steel? Nothing on the paper said it was pressurized duct". The first alert something was wrong was when he said he was all done. The second was the "tiny". The third was when he showed that he only used one sheet of steel for the entire project. Fortunately it only cost us a few hundred dollars in lost wages and material, but it reminded us that "North America" also included Mexico and Canada where they learn HVAC construction in metrics.
@ClausKellerman7 күн бұрын
still. he should have known it was inches if you used a " after the number...
@johnathansaegal31567 күн бұрын
@@ClausKellerman his excuse was "Habit, Canadian sheet metal always used mm". Why he didn't think to ask why such thick sheet metal was to be used on ductwork that would fit inside a Barbie Dream House wasn't asked when I was in the office. Thankfully I was not the foreman over that worker. I was front shop, he was in the back shop. But still... the " markings should have been a dead giveaway.
