The Jackson 5 used a lot of clavinet on their early 70's songs, like Dancing Machine. Michael did too, in his first album Got To Be There, it's used in pretty much every song.

The iconic Superstition sound is actually two different Clavinet parts. Stevie Wonder released mp3s of the multitrack master to serve as a challenge to anyone interested in mixing and DJing. Listening to them separately it's clear that one is the lead and the other filler but they both combine to be something greater than the individual parts.

@@husq48Pianote has a video of his touring keyboardist showing off the song - so she could obviously play the second part, plus she mentions that one part gets played on guitar. I imagine if Stevie had to play it on his own, he has enough funk in his body that he could make it sound good with one part.

The Clav showed up in lots of different genres from arena rock (Foreigner's "Cold as Ice") to Country (Charlie Daniel's "The Devil Went Down to Georgia"). Fortunately, most digital synths have a range of very convincing clav sounds, so you have to be a real purist to insist on an original.
@brucewahler6789

Foreigner used the Clavinet a lot on their first album. I saw them very early in their career, and they used to have THREE of them on stage: one for the keyboard player, Al Greenwood, and one each for guitarists Mick Jones and Ian McDonald. They often played two of them in song intros, and even all three in one song (The Damage Is Done).

Last night at a gig, I was using a great clav patch, I created on my Yamaha YC61. Such a powerful cutting sound, for trading licks with the guitar player. Today I see the history of the original instrument. Fantastic! Love you for sharing your knowledge about this wonderful instrument. Happy Trails...🎶🌎☮

Sun Ra was a very early adapter of the clavinet. He called it the "solar sound instrument"! He made some amazing records with it in the 60's and 70's that folks should check out if they dig the sound.

I called the Homer harmonica factory in Germany in 1975 from my dad’s office when I was ten. Mountain bell ran a credit check on me and since my father and I had the same name and they agreed to make the call, no one seemed to notice I was a child. I got a hold of a guy who spoke english and tried to get him to say how to bend a note and got nowhere with that and all it cost was $100.

Nice summary of the history of the Hohner Clavinet. When I think of the Clavinet the first musician that comes to mind is Terry Adams, a virtuoso that plays the Clavinet as his primary instrument in every NRBQ recording and live performance since the mid-1960s through today.

You left out the part about the cabinets that were left around after everybody got sick of them, and their neoprene hammers got sticky, which gave the instrument a particular double struck sound, so that keyboards that have Clavinet copies in their software often offer Clavinet, Clavinet, classic, and Clavinet retro.
