Cant have both. Souls, know and understand the bible as we all should: 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Sadly, Man’s “morality” his ethics, change all the time! Existentialism, and moral relativism, dominate the philosophical arena and have even infiltrated into elementary education! It permeates society and perverts the nations of the World! Fickle Man decides what’s “moral”, “ethical”, and we have regressed to paganism (mudder earth) and debauchery and perversion and killing our young (pre born and youth) and old! Wow, I didn’t know there were three “types” of “moral relativism”, until today.

Ohhhhh, you want some Adams quotes, I got you! This would be the best of all possible worlds, if there were no religion in it. John Adams You like that? How about this one? The United States of America have exhibited, perhaps, the first example of governments erected on the simple principles of nature. . . . [In] the formation of the American governments . . . it will never be pretended that any persons employed in that service had interviews with the gods, or were in any degree under the influence of heaven. . . . These governments were contrived merely by the use of reason and the senses. John Adams I got some more for ya. But how has it happened that millions of fables, tales, legends have been blended with both Jewish and Christian revelation that have made them the most bloody religion that ever existed? John Adams This one cuts deep, it even mentions your precious orange God. The divinity of Jesus is made a convenient cover for absurdity. Nowhere in the Gospels do we find a precept for Creeds, Confessions, Oaths, Doctrines, and whole carloads of other foolish trumpery that we find in Christianity. John Adams Short and sweet Mystery is made a convenient Cover for absurdity. John Adams Nature God is the key part. The question before the human race is, whether the God of nature shall govern the world by his own laws, or whether priests and kings shall rule it by fictitious miracles? John Adams Thirteen governments [of the original states] thus founded on the natural authority of the people alone, without a pretence of miracle or mystery, and which are destined to spread over the northern part of that whole quarter of the globe, are a great point gained in favor of the rights of mankind. John Adams We should begin by setting conscience free. When all men of all religions shall enjoy equal liberty, property, and an equal chance for honors and power we may expect that improvements will be made in the human character and the state of society. John Adams Have you considered that system of holy lies and pious frauds that has raged and triumphed for 1,500 years? John Adams

For years I would say "stop expecting a law to change behavior and just do the right thing - when each law is passed each person gives up Freedom". This truly expresses my internal voice all along and it is TRUTH. We each have this internal "right & wrong" voice (some call it conscience) yet as we accept worldly ways and if it is "church" or named something else, there still is not some type of moral teaching then lack of Freedom is reflected in all areas of economic life. Sadness continues.

I liked Clay's message. It's simple,without an introduction and reinforcement of basic moral and ethical standards at a young age, people tend to become more self-centered and benign to what's going on outside their small day-to-day existence Christianity has been a global force for Good based on the moral teachings of Jesus. While there have definitely been bad actions and offenses committed by Christians over the past 2,000 years, the same can be said for people of other beliefs. I won't comment specifically on Islam, Hinduism, Bhuddism, Shinto, Zorastrianism or other religions, because I'm certainly no expert. However, these faith-based tenets shaped cultures and gave hope to overcome the struggles of difficult human life. Today in the freedom of Information Age, people are more free to choose what they believe or seek out. They can access it all and have more time to investigate, dissect, fact-check, and arm chair debate in a faceless community. But in this overload, more people seem lost than ever before -leading to bad decisions, as Clay alluded to. I'm not advocating that there is a one-size-fits all religion for everyone. But spreading the Good News cannot be a bad thing! Telling someone that you love and respect them because they are another unique human being is what it's all about. I can't say that I do it everyday, its very difficult, but it is the probably one of the greatest things you can do. The key is people need the message, regardless of where it comes from, they need to hear the truth about Love, Equality and coexistence. The pursuit of Greed and Lust while it can be powerful and productive in many ways, ultimately leads to someone else's negative consequence on the flip side. Keep that in mind. I felt compelled after reading so much negativity, after what I thought was very positive and thought provoking message.

I have been discussing with my daughter about "Common Sense" having a prerequisite of "Common Morality". The Common Morality that was prevalent when this nation was founded has over the years been compromised to the point that many people's sense of self government is now based on their own desires and not the teaching they grew up with in a godly home or church. Self government according to biblical principles, whether you like it or not, created common morality. If we don't have a common morality in that we all desire to follow the law, then one person's view of the sensibility of another is no longer common. For instance, the moral foundation of a conservative republican is so completely different than a liberal democrat that there is virtually nothing in common between them. If there is no longer a deep down common moral foundation, then there can be no reasonable compromise that benefits both parties. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with 2 points of view. Where we go wrong is that the 2 points of view, in the interest of their agendas, push to the extremes with no apparent common foundation. This can be illustrated with specific issues such as Right-to-life vs. Right-to-choose. One moral foundation is based on the individual's right to choice as the most important factor of their personal moral foundation whereas the other is based on the sanctity of life as valued from a religious foundation. Here we have this video pointing out the fact that as religion loses its influence over society, you can't hire enough police. Even our founding fathers knew this. John Adams, Our second president is quoted saying, "...we have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." I suggest that if there is no longer a common morality then the forces of separate foundations of morality will contend one with another to the disservice of all. In the pursuit of "fairness" without a common foundation of morality, we will most assuredly bring to destruction all of our cherished human freedoms we were given that were once based on the common sense and common morality that this nation was founded on. This is important because people of differing religious influence have a different moral foundation. For example, a Muslim has a different foundation than a Christian which is different than a Pagan, which is different than a Satanist. What would this nation look like today if it were founded on any other religious foundation other than Christianity? Some would not have had the conviction to lay down their own life for the benefit of others. Another would lay down their life, but it is for a significant reward in the afterlife at the expense or destruction of others. I would dare say that the United States of America would have never come to be. I agree with the statement made in this video with a slight adjustment because religion alone is not sufficient. Without a Godly influence in people's lives and in turn the loss of a common morality, any and all laws will become meaningless to the people and everyone will once again do as they please. If we as a nation fail to return to our Christian roots, we will certainly cease to be United after which we will certainly fall.

Not just for the wisdom but the loss ... for how far we have descended. We do live in a country that no longer voluntarily follows the rules. Especially, the government no longer follows the rules. And when that happens ... police are no longer sufficient ... court are no longer sufficient ... then what do we do? It is not the people who do not follow the rules, government no longer follows the rules.

The questions he poses at the end: what would happen to democracy if you took away religion? has many answers, depending on the quality of the people in that country before the transition. But we don't have to look very far for an easily verifiable answer. The country might look a lot like Norway. From Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norway: "From 2010 to 2012, Norway was classified as the most democratic country by the Democracy Index." And: "In the early 1990s, studies estimated that between 4.7% and 5.3% of Norwegians attended church on a weekly basis. This figure has dropped to about 2% - the lowest such percentage in Europe - according to data from 2009 and 2010." So there's at least one answer. It would look like Norway, a country which consistently ranks in the top 4 countries to live in as measured by several indices, such as the OECD Better Life Index www.businessinsider.com/top-countries-on-oecd-better-life-index-2013-5?op=1 The other Nordic countries perform similarly in quality of life and in low religiosity. There are other possible outcomes too, but the Nordic countries are an easy example to point to as a real test case.

If you are only moral because you believe god is watching you, then you aren't really moral at all. You are obeying out of fear of an eternity in hell. Unless they harm you? Really? As Christians, we are not to judge others nor are we to take revenge. That is God's job. We are to turn the other cheek and return bad with good. God will not forgive us our sins if we cannot first forgive others their transgressions again us. Those Christians who take their Christianity seriously and study their Bible on a regular basis really do try to live their lives as the Bible commands. Are we always successful? No. But we repent and ask forgiveness and try again. When you repent of a sin, you do not ask forgiveness and then commence to continue that sin again. You must be truly repentant and not sin in that manner again. There was only one perfect and sinless man who lived on this earth...Jesus Christ. He is our role model. Even though we can never be sinless and perfect, we are to strive to be like Christ.

Barbara Ward Defending yourself against those who attack isn't revenge, it's commons sense. I don't believe god, and particularly don't respect religions that teach immoral dogma such as carrying the sin of an ancestor. You cannot wear the sin of another person, it's a b.s. guilt trip. Obviously not a moral position. You can't cast your sins off on a scape-goat. If you commit a crime, and someone takes the rap for you, you remain guilty, and their scapegoating cannot change that fact. In fact, it would be immoral of you to accept the torture and death of another for your sins. But you must ignore all that, or twist your logic into a pretzel to make it work. Christ wasn't god, if he even existed., and this is utter nonsense. Your christian leaders have tortured and executed non-believers by the thousands, in the name of your religion. But of course you just ignore that. One can only imagine how few people would be left on earth if the early church had tanks, aircraft and the bomb. Thankfully, christians no longer practice their "faith" in any form that the early church would even recognize. Most of you no longer believe the nonsense about the bible being literally true, so just ditch the rest of the nonsense, and we'll work on the Muslims...update their philosophy and we'll be good to go. I think we just need your generation to die off. At the rate people are dropping out of churches and chapels, and losing their faith, we'll be rid of it in a couple more decades, except for the more ignorant that are left. Good riddance.

harlon57 I started to type answers to your statements but you are so far off with all your accusations and misunderstandings of the Bible and God and yes, even Jesus. Just like the history of slavery, Christians can't be held responsible for what the early church did in the name of Christianity (I'm assuming you are referring to the Crusades) and I think the Roman Catholic Church has apologized for that. You seem to have a lot of anger and hate toward God, Jesus and "religion" in general...or at least that's the perception from your above comments. When anyone is that biased and close minded, there is no reasoning that can change their point of view. If it were earlier in the day, I might take the time to explain the OT and animal sacrifices for sin atonement and the NT era. But I'm an old lady and at this hour I'm tired and have to go to bed. Perhaps tomorrow if I can find the thread back here as sometimes I can't find a link back to these forums.

Barbara Ward I love it, you say you were going to respond, but changed your mind, then you do, in a cheap and haphazard way. Of course you had to, because you know that you no longer practice the actual religion, you practice the piecemeal version cobbled together over centuries as people stopped believing parts of it to be even possible. Now you call me biased and closed minded, so I can add psychic to your list. Notice that you are judgmental, and a common christian hypocrite. Your obviously very long life as a christian was no help in keeping you from coming back here and making your passive-aggressive comment that is a response without addressing the issues. Typical hypocrite. You couldn't control your ego and temper long enough to let it go. No, you have to prove you're right. I love it, it happens all the time. Your religion provides no real source of assistance to you, and you know it. This tiny test of your ego and you failed. So much for decades and decades training as a christian. You fail an easy test. I'm not surprised, you all fail, and you fail repeatedly.

Barbara Ward While you're figuring out why your christian trained ego compelled you to respond with a passive aggressive comment, think about this: You say you shouldn't be responsible for the actions and beliefs of the early church, but no doubt believe that we can should bear the sin of a mythical ancestor. Original sin is an immoral concept, but so are many of the original teachings in the old testament. Jesus didn't come to abolish the law, but to fulfill them..the only way you can get away from "stoning for working on the sabbath", is to completely ignore the law. But you do. Your religion is no longer your god's religion, but one that is acceptable in polite, modern society. Your religion, is an abomination, full of bronze and iron age practices, many adopted from the area's and era's pagans.

Yes, we are losing a lot of good things in our modern retreat from and rejection of faith. One thing Mr. Christiansen didn't emphasize was the nature of the faith that provides the positive foundation for democracy. In our effort to be respectful of people of all faiths, we are very reluctant to consider the unique qualities of each different faith. It is no mistake that Christianity, with its close ties to Judaism, provided the grounding that sustains democracy.

I don't want to be killed or stolen from, so I do not kill or steal. I want others to follow the law, so I must do so as well. It's common sense and religion has no part in it. These kinds of beliefs actually scare me. Are you saying that religious people would start breaking the law if their beliefs were somehow proven undeniably false, simply because they no longer have a fear of hell? The extremest, sure, but those are nut jobs. Many Athiest and believers in religions that have no eternal damnation get by just fine in society, I'd hope the average Christian/Muslim/Jew could too, even without their god... Yes, however, you're assuming that your common sense is, well, common. The variability and range of "common sense" is widening. What accounts for this? An example of the widening of common sense: advocacy groups exist today calling for certain protections for adults who are sexual attracted to children. This type of idea was essentially nonexistent a couple decades ago. Clayton Christianson is not saying religious people have common sense therefore non-religious people don't have common sense. He's saying that having a large majority of citizen who adhere to the Christian religion (insert any religion or philosophy with "the golden rule" as a central tenet) creates commonality in total. And let's be clear, many claim to be religious/live the golden rule. But sadly, it's mostly talk in today's world. Not the case 200 years ago. Lastly, I think you should consider less extreme examples of common sense. Meaning it's clearly obvious we shouldn't kill or rob a bank or break into someone's house.......but it's not so clear when it comes to maybe fibbing on our taxes, exaggerating an insurance claim, yelling at the umpire, binging Netflix while we should be working remotely for an employer. The list goes on and on. Those likely seem trivial. But they aren't. The more common we all are in agreeing to be "good" people, the stronger our democracy works. All of these things make up the fabric of our society.

Behavioral science shows that Christianity did much to objectively improve the lives of people (women, the poor/sick, etc.) than belief in Jupiter or Thor. Science also says there are only two genders so what does it know. There have been many books written from different cultures (such as Epicetus or Sun Tzu) that make reference to gods or heaven. J. Michael Strasincki (a noted atheist) once wrote that taking religion or spirituality out of scifi settings is foolish because it jas been a part of human culture since the very beginning. [While it is possible to imagine those without, it is just as possible to imagine those with. No more far fetched than time travel or warp drives].

I agree with the views expressed here, and I believe that what most people don’t know is there is a Biblically consistent design for governing God’s authority (our own personal authority from God, and that given to us to lead institutions under our care, such as our marriages, our families, and our business, churches, schools, etc.) that helps each of us as individuals, leaders and groups of leaders govern well and wisely. The only thing I would add to what he said to take it a bit further is that stewarding our authority rightly for God goes beyond obeying the law… it is goes further to being a person of total integrity and stewardship to DO THE RIGHT THING, even when there is not a law to follow. Part of the problem in our society these days is that things change too fast for the laws to keep up with it, so if I only use the law as my barometer I may still do things I should not do for the common good of society simply because “it’s not against the law” (there has been a lot of that in corporate America - that’s why so few people go to jail despite very poor decisions and behavior). Secondly, we have also been entering into a period more deeply where many of the laws are not just or Biblically consistent… which of course then only basing our behavior and choices on “the law” becomes problematic as disciples of Jesus Christ. The problems we have are solvable with God’s help. But we have become such a hard hearted and rebellious people towards God, I’m not sure we are going to listen and repent before it is too late. My experience has been that Corporate America, the Church, and the Country have not been willing to listen, despite very clear evidence that we have not been governing well or in a manner that will sustain the freedom of our marketplace, our church, or our republic. Bad behavior and a lack of true integrity eats away at the ability to be truly free. This is true for institutions as much as it is true for individuals.

logofreetv Nonsense. really, nonsense. Secular governments are well run, peaceful and prosperous. The United States is also in fact, a secular government- hence the First Amendment. Trying to reshape the nation out of fear and a lust for power ill behooves those who would follow Christ- yet it happens. many claim to follow a Christian morality yet resent the mythical "takers".... interesting, isn't it, "under God" and "IN God We Trust weren't part of the pledge or the currency until less than a century ago?
@logofreetv
@logofreetv 10 жыл бұрын
The pledge or currency aren't relevant. The First Amendment was not written to stop religious freedom or involvement with government, but guarantee the ability to practice it without interference from the government. The idea that people of faith cannot influence government would've been foreign to the founding fathers. You have it backwards. btw, the track record of those governments that tried to squash Christianity isn't good - either in their longevity, freedom, or prosperity.
@jpcurtis6052
@jpcurtis6052 10 жыл бұрын
No one is trying to squash Christianity at all. However, the First Amendment prohibits the making of laws that might impair any faith, no? My right to practice my faith of choice, or not to practice, is protected under the First Amendment. Explicitly. And supported, consistently, in supreme court interpretations. The Founding Fathers had full knowledge of the religious wars in Europe at the time and had no desire to see such factions bring conflict to the States- hence the secular nature of the constitution. If you need further evidence- the Treaty of Tripoli, entered into by the United States in 1796... reads, specifically "As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen [Muslims]; and as the said States never entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mahometan [Mohammedan] nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries". Secular democracies tend to work fairly well. The U.S. is a secular democracy, as are most of the nations of western Europe.

It's amazing to me how people cannot separate the generality of Clay's comments with their own limited experiences. So, you happen to not believe in God yet obey laws? Well, good for you. But on a grander scale, it simply makes sense that a concept of being accountable 100% of the time and not being able to 'get away' with anything will instil greater desire in people to obey the rule of law. This video is just common sense, but those who hate God are blind already. Clay is only echoing what John Adams said centuries ago: "Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other."

Look in the mirror and see the hypocrisy of your statement. "Limited experiences" eh? So your experience and this guy's trumps everyone else's? Something "simply making sense" does not mean it is accurate. It once made sense that the world was flat and the universe circled around Earth. People brought up with the morals and awareness to live in a society don't necessarily need religion to make them better people. And by "religion" is it safe to assume you mean Christianity rather than Buddhism or Islam? If so, that shows your "limited experience." Even if you meant any religion, how do you explain this supposed effect discussed in the movie with the difference between philosophies in religions? If you respond, please do so with rational and logical responses rather than just attacking me or putting me down.

@brentlarson4242
@brentlarson4242 9 жыл бұрын
Barbara Ward It can come from any number of places. "Our" moral standards is a bit vague, because my moral standards are probably different than yours, but just because they're different doesn't mean that they are better or worse. Christianity certainly is not the basis of "our" (as in every person's) moral standards. An awareness to live harmoniously with fellow man can be seen as a logical and rational response to living in society. For the same reason that laws predate Christianity and can be traced back to the earliest civilizations, if we live harmoniously with fellow man then it's beneficial for all. If I don't have a reason to fear that every person is going to steal from or kill me, and if I get along with people in my life, then my life is going to be easier. Are you insinuating from your question that Christianity is the basis of "our" moral standards (i.e. the whole world's, let alone America's) or "awareness" to live harmoniously?

Dear Chancellor Hawkins, American Atheists is contacting you on behalf of a Troy University student, who is concerned about a video you sent to all students and staff in your end-of-year email on December 30. The video asserts that religion, particularly Judeo-Christian beliefs, are necessary to be moral, law-abiding citizens, and implies that those who do not attend church will be anti-democracy and anti-social members of society. Atheists are not a trivial minority. In Alabama alone, we represent 11% of the population, and statistically even higher numbers in universities and among college-aged residents; as many as 32% of people under age 30 are not religious. On behalf of the student who contacted us, the Alabama members of American Atheists, the thousands of atheists at Troy University, and the hundreds of millions of atheists worldwide who live productive, law-abiding lives without religion, we demand an apology from you for using the public university email system and your publicly funded position to disparage atheists and minority religious groups as well as perpetuating the discrimination and anti-patriotic sentiment against atheists in the United States. As you represent an institution of higher learning, we would like to take this opportunity to educate you about atheists and morality. Atheists are overwhelmingly ethical and upstanding people. It is not true that religion is necessary to keep people from becoming criminals. According to leading secularism researcher Professor Phil Zuckerman at Pitzer College, “We can plainly see that the least religious countries and states are generally the most moral, peaceful, and humane, while the most religious countries and states are the most crime-ridden, corrupt, and socially troubled. End of discussion.” In fact, in the United States, in states with the highest percentages of atheists, the murder rate is lower than average. In the most-religious states, the murder rate is higher than average. Further, on average and generally speaking, atheists have fewer divorces, abortions, and STDs, and lower poverty rates, homicide rates, overall crime rates, and teen pregnancy rates. As a demographic, atheists have higher IQs, incomes, education rates, and literacy rates, and more Nobel Prizes and university professorships. We need to teach young people to use critical thinking and be more skeptical, not more obedient. Teaching as such leads-demonstrably-to more ethical behavior. American Atheists will be hosting its annual national convention the first weekend in April at the Peabody Hotel in Memphis. We invite you to attend any or all of the events to experience for yourself what atheism and atheists are like. We believe that personal experience helps fight ignorance so we invite you to be our special guest. We ask for a public apology to the student, and other atheists whom you have disparaged with the video you included in your email. Sincerely, David Silverman President, American Atheists

That is called "subjective"truth. which proves the professors point. if there is no God then there is no truth and we end up with complete confusion, insecurity and instability. I read it at least 14 years ago, and It makes your very point---that with everyone living by their own (subjective) "truth" society descends into chaos and that leads to tyranny. This is because people require order, even imposed order, as no one can live very long in chaos. As more and more of our freedoms are being trampled, I have often marveled over the years at how prophetic that book is.

Even Science agrees. The Big Bang Theory points out that the universe required creation from an outside causal agent (God). Yet there is another aspect of today’s scientific evidence that strengthens this claim even further-the intentional design of the universe. Rather than a series of random occurrences or simply explainable evolutionary chain, the complexity and intentionality of the observable universe points toward an outside force of vast wisdom and power.

Looks like a pretty obvious piece of religious propaganda. If the main reason that people voluntarily obey society's laws is merely out of fear of a spanking from an imaginary father figure in the sky, then I don't have much hope for humanity. Thankfully, I'm a firm believer that you can have morality independent of religion. I'm all for religious freedom and letting people pick whatever flavor suits them best (or none at all), so long as their beliefs and actions don't infringe on the rights of others. However, for Mr. Christensen to imply that the survival of democracy is dependent on religion is intellectually dishonest, in my opinion.

I think if AMERICANs would take the time to study our actual history (not the edited and enhanced versions taught in schools) we might understand better what is happening today in our country. Religion is under attack why?

Sandy Vee I don't deny that religion had some influence on the founding of our nation, as most of the founding fathers were deists. However, we do not have a state religion for a reason. The founding fathers addressed the need for a separation between Church and State. I don't doubt that history textbooks contain inaccuracies, and I believe the historic documents are the best "texts" we have. Just where do you suggest that Americans look to learn about our "actual" history aside from these sources? Mostly I take issue with Mr. Christensen implying that the continued survival of democracy is somehow dependent on adults putting aside logic and believing in superstition, as if that is the only source of morality. One reason that many religious people (and I used to one of them) may feel that religion is under attack is that the average person is becoming more educated and those who see through religion are becoming more vocal. With the continuous proposal of discriminatory laws based on sexual preference and laws designed to restrict abortions to a degree that they become effectively impossible to obtain, rational Americans must make their voices heard. In the age of information and reason, I am not surprised that religion is feeling threatened.

d4m0nh Your remarks are full of errors. First, David Barton, a well respected scholar, has debunked the notion many times. If you wish to question him, feel free but don't make remarks that are not true. Next, the Founders NEVER said there was to be a wall of separation between the institutions of the church and our government. Jefferson was the only one to write on that and it was in a private letter to a Baptist minister, not intended for one moment to be policy or apply to our government. Yes, they did want a theocracy or a single religion to dominate because that was what they left in England, so their efforts were only to prevent the state from establishing a single, national religion controlled by the state. They never meant to make a complete separation of the church, in fact quite the contrary. John Adams was quoted as saying our government was meant for a religious and moral people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. There is no ambiguity in that statement.

Mike Travis That Crusader avatar you've got there speaks volumes. Your assertion that the Founding Fathers wanted to establish a Theocracy is absolutely false, and yet you have the nerve to accuse me or making remarks that aren't true. Have you read the Constitution? Do you know what a Theocracy is? There are only two mentions of religion in the US Constitution that I am aware of. The first appears in Article 6, Section 3 and reads, "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States." The second, found in the First Amendment reads, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances." That's it. It is clear from his writings that John Adams was deist and as such would certainly have had his own opinions on religion's role in government, but the Founding Fathers did not want to recreate the situation they left in England. I believe they would turn in their graves if the Christian Extremists had their way with this country. Worship your sky-daddy if you must, but don't pretend that your beliefs apply to the rest of us or that our country should be governed by them.

The thing is, you CAN escape the grasp of thought police (religion) but you can't really get away from living in society. So it is a way better alternative to teach children to relate to one another and to build meaningful lives, so that they at least have something better to lose instead of a tall, pointy building full of judgmental people. Religion alone can't provide people with a reason to behave well, only a successful social upbringing can do that. If you add that to a scientific education, you might actually have a human being that is not only well behaved but can actually do something to help the next generation like find cures to diseases, discover the next breakthrough in technology, etc. Charity is a good thing to do, very well-intention but we need for everyone to be scientifically minded as well as to have good intentions, you can't do much with good intentions alone.Religion can teach us only one thing, how to create communities, then again, we just need the know-how not the religion or the dogmas.

Clay's point that the democratic function relies heavily upon the compliance of the majority is well taken. A state where the majority does not voluntarily obey the majority of the substantive laws would be inefficient at best, and dysfunctional at worst. His second point, though, is poorly supported at best, and inaccurate and insulting at worst. He said "If you take away religion, you can't hire enough police," and explicitly drew a positive correlation between weekly church attendance + a belief in accountability to God, and obedience to laws. I think a rather large proportion of those who either do not attend church or do not believe in God would balk, despite the persuasive mellow tones playing in the background, at the suggestion that the only leash holding them back from law-breaking is the threat of police enforcement. Religious do not enjoy a corner on the moral market, and I am not aware of evidence that they are, on average, any more or less law-abiding than their non-church attending, non-theistic counterparts. Though not acquainted with the relevant literature myself, I would also be unsurprised to find a lack of empirical evidence supporting Clay's claim- I can think of some relatively godless countries with much lower crime rates than some highly religious ones, for example. I would speculate that other factors (the corruptness of the government, the economic security of the actor, the efficiency and fairness of the country's laws, the cost of compliance, etc.) are more predictive of voluntary compliance with laws than one's church attendance. If your aim truly is a functioning democracy, then you should focus on the factors that most powerfully predict that functionality: like economic opportunity, an efficient and accessible justice system, a strong and stable central government, etc. Regardless of whether I've speculated well, what Clay's done is inappropriate: used the fear of law-breaking masses in order to promote religion, bereft of compelling evidence.

It is what motivates children to behave, but fully developed adults generally develop to a higher stage of moral functioning. LibertarianUSA1982 I DO use the word ‘republic’ because I am thankful that is the form of government we have in America; I would not want to live under an actual democracy. However, I currently see our form of governance under attack from many sides and it concerns me greatly. I am convinced that one of the things constitutionalists MUST do is convince our fellow Americans of what Walter E. Williams refers to as “the moral superiority of liberty.” To that end, I would much rather have an open and successful discussion with a person who misuses the word “democracy” than prematurely end the discussion-unsuccessfully-because I insisted everyone must talk like I do, and dot every i and cross every t like I do. Bottom line: if we are going to make any difference at all we are going to have to stop trying to win every argument and start winning hearts. Without that, we will end up with neither democracy nor republic, but with chaos. I fear that is what our enemies want; I assume that you do not.

With that said, we have a very low crime rate, if someone needs help neighbors kick in and help out however they can, and our charities are blessed with volunteers that work hard for no pay. Without religious beliefs, where is the morality of America? Good Point Ken. The Bible does say to Fear God, but IMO (though my study), this common use of the word fear is to hold God in reverence, awe, in His position as Creator of the Universe. There is a punishment for the sinner who fails to accept Christ, but it is eternal separation from God - not an "Eternal" burning hell (lie from Satan).

Without the Ten Commandments we would not have any moral compass on which to base right and wrong behavior in a society. Even primitive peoples believed in some sort of god or gods that were responsible for their being and for their good fortunes or bad fortunes and that their bad fortunes were a result of a wrong doing against their god/gods.
