I disagree with this. While I get they aren’t people to model your life after, people like Tim Tebow and Bryce Harper are inspirational people. I mean John Cena is basically an actor and he has the highest recording of make a wish foundation fulfilled requests. I totally get that there are many athletes that ruin themselves and aren’t something to aspire to be. On the other hand, we don’t really get too much coverage of all the good athletes do. King James is opening a school for kids in bad situations and all people can talk about is what he said about trump. I guess what I’m saying is that if you really think this, you are missing the most beautiful part of sports. That connection between a fan and an athlete he aspires to be. Wearing his jersey only asking for a bit of attention.

Athletes have been role models to children for as long as Wheaties has been able to print pictures on cereal boxes. They used to represent an ideal for effort and vision that inspired children to give their best. Having said that, things have changed a lot in the last 2 decades. You are wise to discourage your children from seeing today's athletes as inspiration or ideal. Chalk up another point for those who seek to destroy the America we grew up in.

WelcomeToJ, the NHL’s growth is steady but it rarely grows as fast as many investors like to believe it is/will. The Hurricanes, Panthers, and Coyotes showcase that very well. Then, we have teams like the Stars, Lightning and Ducks that really can’t survive unless they are winning. Some teams can undergo a rebuild and continue making money, but some franchises just don’t have the market to sell tickets at those times. Just a few years ago, it seemed like every other hockey fan I talked to want to dissolve 4+ teams.

Hey friend, I never refereed to the speed at which the league is growing (whether fast or slow) but that it is, indeed, growing. Team valuations are up (according to Nasdaq reporting) and at least four franchises are valued at over 1 billion. Of course almost any team who is not winning (in most sports I would argue) has a hard time surviving. And of course hockey's "desert teams" are a constant low-market struggle - sometimes relocating to a better market is the solution, and that works! But the league is expanding (i.e. the Golden Knights most recently) and the salary cap is on the rise. As a side note, the NHL also has a decent draft system in that struggling franchises have really good odds of landing young stars who can turn around their franchises and add star power (Buffalo most recently for example).
