Charlie, in normal conditions ( not as last season ) would you recommend running over with a straw rake after drilling to level out the ribbing left by batter boards ? I'm alway conscious about putting more unneeded compaction down but am finding my fields are very rough .

HI Chris, sorry for the slow reply. In most soil types and and conditions the drill tines should be making a good tilth and the batterboards & harrows should getting a nice level seedbed ready for the rollers to consolidate so there shouldn't be any need. However if you're on heavy clay or land that is sad 'in poor health' and the drill has left it slightly cloddy then yes the straw harrow ahead of the rolls is a really good tool. After several years of Claydon drilling the soil in the top couple of inches will become more friable and tilthy so the harrow wont be needed.
