AI's influence cannot be overstated, i don't care what the advanced metrics say. He had middle schoolers in rural michigan putting their hair in cornrows.
@fortynights1513
@fortynights1513 11 ай бұрын
If you look at only advanced metrics, and really, efficiency metrics, you’ll probably end up underrating Iverson in some ways. If his team has better spacing, he’d probably have been more efficient (his efficiency was at its best in Denver in 08, and they are said to have shot better than early 2000’s Philly did from three). And as is, there’s one Iverson game that I never see anyone bring up where even people who go off of analytics would also say he played great: In the first game of the first round of the 2003 playoffs, Iverson was playing the Hornets who while not good offensively, were the fifth best defense by points, and seventh best by defensive rating. Against them, he put up 55 points on 65.6% from the field, and 74.6% true shooting with a box plus minus of 21.9 along with eight assists (which led to 17 additional points) and four turnovers in a 98-90 game that his team won in regulation. There are only three other playoff performances of 55+ points on true shooting that is at least as high as he had, and they all occurred in much higher scoring games in eras that are described as having faster paces than the early 2000’s. That game by AI is one of the most impressive playoff statistical games I’ve ever read about, and it came from a player who is often criticized for bad efficiency, and the game isn’t talked about at all because it was a first round game in a year where his team lost in the second round. Iverson’s influence and cultural impact are also huge and deservedly so.

One thing I will say for Iverson: He averaged more minutes per game than you are likely to see most players average now. He may be overrated in some regards, but his endurance is arguably overlooked. He’s responsible for the most minutes per game of anyone since Truck Robinson in 1977-78 if I’m not mistaken.

I just want to say how legendary Allen iverson was. As a kid from the inner city in NY, this man was him. As a kid you never really know what it means to be inspired but man, I wanted to be just like Allen. Seeing that man fight amongst the trees in the court gave the little me motivation to succeed. His game transcends the game of basketball as he touched many lives. Anyone that knows chuck, knows he’s very emotional and in tune. Well, your fans love you more then you could imagine chuck. We thank you for your service that you given humanity. An icon for sure.

Indeed. There's lots of others making bball vids out there (...or here? lol), and some do make an exceptional work too in their own merit, but what makes this dude stand out is his very distinct story-telling style. His vids may not be packed with stats and all that - he though does extensive reasearch related to the charcters that his vids are about and presents it in the nicest way. It's like listening to a wise old dud sharing a huge lifetime experience. And the cherry on top is that even though he does state that "this is his personal take" on whatever, it everytime is persuasive enough as if it's a professional documentary we're watching and not some YT channel's content. 🙂

Allen Iverson to me is one of the best examples of what talent and willpower alone can accomplish, an incredible phenomenon and individual who pushed envelope of what a basketball player could be, inspiring an entire new generation of hoopers with his play style, attitude, vision, physicality, and fashion… as well as why there are so many legends well ahead of him in the all time standings, once his youth ran out his body failed him thanks to the fact he didn’t do strength and conditioning training or you know practice as much as he should have. Allen himself has admitted that he could have have had a much longer run of dominance and career overall had he actually worked out more regularly, but he still left one hell of a mark for his time that is undeniable.

So... Clayton, in addition to my GOAT list, all-time team lists, best position lists, etc, I have my All Rodman team list. I hated the Pistons and Rodman. I hated his antics, his comments, his game. Then he joined my team, the Bulls. When I saw what he could do for my team, then he became my favorite player. The All-Rodman team consists of players who (if I admit it to myself) were on my team... they'd be my favorite player. Iverson is starting PG on that team. As a basketball fan, Iverson driving the lane is as pretty, as athletic, as definitive of a basketball player as I've ever seen.

This is kind of a reminder though with all the greatest PG talk guys like Steph, AI and Wade belong in the greatest combo guard category and it really should be its own thing. If there was such a thing as pure combo guard they're it. It does a better service to pure and combo vs trying to mix them in GOAT conversations..

I have never been a sports person. BUT...I became intrigued and mesmerized by Allen Iverson !!! I think that you cannot truly understand AI without putting him in a historical retrospect. Poverty and political racism had a big impact on him, as well as others. Imagine living over a sewer ? Why is that ? Imagine being subjected to a 1800's "maiming by mob"law, not intended for you.And had not been used in 100 years ??? Waiting for you to 18 to charge you as an adult, to intentionally destroy you? How many of us would have survived that ? The NBA made billions off AI, I believe. Cornrows been around since the first Africans existed. WE were then being coerced into looking at AI, through a Eurocentric lens, to find fault with him, through the mainstream media. YES... he was fascinating to watch and listen to ! How much money did the controversies and his personal life make for them ? Hmmm...WE should get an accountant! Anywho...I LOVE AI...AND I ALWAYS WILL !!! 🥰🤗❤️🖤💚❤🖤💚

AI will forever be a lesson in the importance of buying into the team. Compare him and Kobe: both of them drafted in that stacked 1996 draft class. Both of them with excellent on-court work ethic. But only one of them with the same drive off-court, only one of them eventually conceded to the coach's criticisms, only one of them showed up to practice sessions more than anyone else. In the end, Kobe grew up and matured and became the beloved face of basketball's most storied team. AI's career ended with a bit of a whimper, out of the league and unable to sit in the upper echelons of the greatest of the greats.

Eh. Kobe’s career only ended the way it did cause the circumstances each had before coming into the league were vastly different. It was always Kobe’s dream to be the greatest basketball player ever, so much so that he didn’t want hindrances on the team. A.I not so much. He only wanted to be in the NBA to take care of his family. That was just enough for him, he already accomplished his goal, Kobe hadn’t. And that’s specifically because of their upbringings. Now you give A.I both of his parents and instill discipline in him at an early age with a childhood in a foreign country and then we might have an argument for the better player later down the line. But as far as when they both were drafted in the beginning, A.I use to spank Kobe and the lakers on a daily bases.

AI robbed Shaq at the height of his powers of a perfect unanimous mvp and a perfect playoff record the next year. Those two achievements alone are greater than any ring
