Clean Fender Tone // How to get a clean tone from Universal Audio's 55 Tweed Deluxe

Universal Audio's 55 Tweed Deluxe breaks up early. Keeping it clean requires some forethought. There are several strategies, and in this video I show one method that works well enough for me.

The guitar used in this video is a Fender Pro II. I am using pure nickel strings and also have my tone pot rolled down between 4 and 8. FYI.
I write songs. I spend a lot of time recording and mixing them. I use this Fender amp plug-in routinely during the process. My perspective is one of a self-taught home studio musician, though I've picked up tons of stuff from channels at KZfaq, various forums, books, and just intently listening to stuff I like. I have a growing collection of songs here on KZfaq, Spotify, and other streaming platforms.

I can get a clean sound of that amp but my advice if you're after a good clean sound from a UAD plugin is to use the SVT classic (yes, a bass amp).

That's a great point. I do sometimes use the SVT for clean tones. I like it as well. Do you have a preferred setting?

Thanks. The Universal Audio unit is a kind of audio interface, but mine is a model that allows you to add plugins to the interface itself. That puts let strain on your computer, as it's like having a dedicated processor to do the heavy lifting of making the plugins work. Amp plugins in particular tends to consume a chunk of power from a computer.

thank you for this video, ive been trying to see someone play some clean tones with uad plugins, as im gonna get an apollo soon and would like to go completely in the box. I really hope they update their amp sims though, a dream 65 plugin would be amazing

I'm 3 years in the UAD universe. Excellent...outstanding... products, both hardware and software, but I've found that it takes a really long time to become a proficient user. There are lots of varying opinions on the UAD amp sims. Like you, I hope for updates, but I don't expect them anytime soon. FWIW, I like the sound of the Fender plug-in more than the recorded sound of my Fender tube amp. UAD amp sims are my favorite for playing. They all provide a responsiveness and liveliness that I don't experience with other sims. That being said, I record with Neural DSP plug-ins about half of the time, just because I find it easier to modify the tones in the direction I'm looking for. I would also be interested in a 65 plug-in. My top wish, though, is a twin.

Plug ins can be hard to get the way you want them to sound at times. You certainly made this sound sweet amigo. Smooth playing, great tutorial. Huge thumbs up and much respect, cheers brother 🤘👁👍

The original Fender Tweed Deluxe breaks up 'very early,' so Universal Audio got it right.

yes, and I think that it is a good and bad thing for many users. It's good to have such an accurate sim, but it is bad for those who hear "Fender" and imagine the clean Fender sound. I love the 55 Tweed, but I anxiously await a Twin.

so there are so many of these plugins nowadays. is this still worthwile?

That's a great question. There are so many options. I have had very different experiences with the various systems. I'm convinced that one isn't necessarily better than another; rather it is a matter of what sounds and feels right to you. I've strongly disliked some plug-ins that other people love. For me, the UAD amp sims and the plug-in offerings from Neural DSP keep me very, very happy and content. They are the only sims I use. Nothing else even comes close. But there are plenty of other sims that other people love. I go for several months playing UAD only; then, suddenly, I switch to Neural. It's back and forth all the time, and I'm glad I have both, because each has strong points. My best advice is to take a trial to see how you react. I do think it's a matter that is that personal. I love the cleaner tones, and for those, how the sim responds to your playing is so crucial. Would love to hear what you think about the plug-in if you get a chance to give it a spin.

If someone is looking for “that classic fender clean tone”, they should probably just be told that the Tweed Deluxe is famous for classic Fender tones that are pretty much the opposite of their classic clean tones. It’s understandable that you might need to get a good useable clean tone from a Tweed Deluxe if you have the real amp, and it’s all you have, but if your working with plugins, just use a Fender blackface or silverface Twin Reverb amp model instead, and you’ll have that clean you’re looking for without even having to work at it.

I tend to agree with most of what you say here. It's a great point, and I think there are preconceptions involved when UAD users read 'Fender amp' with this plugin. UAD hasn't given us a twin option, and I figure that I am one of many with that amp on their wishlist. There are amps in the UAD catalogue that clean up (I'm using a Fuchs at the moment that I quite enjoy), but the UAD Tweed is still the most responsive, life-like amp sim in their catalogue, at least to my ears and fingers. When a sim is that good, I can't help to try to chase its clean tone, since that is what I am mostly after when I play.

@@gbfusion Sorry, I didn’t realize that UA didn’t even have a Twin model. I don’t use plugins, but I thought the Twin or Blackface Deluxe were pretty much the standard models offered for clean amps tones on just about every amp modelling platform.

@@darwinsaye oh no worries at all. Your point is still a good one. Given how important the blackface twin is to recording history, one would think that the amp would be part of the bedrock of UAD plugins. The same could be said of the deluxe. It is even more puzzling when considering that UAD offers 5 amps from Marshall and then 3 more from Friedman.
