This was a much needed clean up. The understory plantings did not fare well and will require restoration. This is the first real opportunity to develop the primary branching as if the trees had naturally grown together.

Nice pruning of this forest. I like making landscapes also. I think it adds a touch of class to a cool tree. This forest is marvelous.

I really like this compilation, Steve. Nice work! And the Trees from Cuttings are a nice touch too.

Thanks Patricia. I was wondering if you knew whether my statement, that with Bald Cypress, you don’t have to worry about pruning to a bud, is correct.
@PatriciaOConnorBonsaiBalcony22 күн бұрын
@@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai Yes, I think that's spot on. When green growth hardens off and turns brown like bark it is covered in little bumps almost resembling "Goose Bumps". Those are all potential bud sites,

Nice work Steve. I'm thinking of making a penjing with a steam that holds water also so good to see your idea with slate. Looks really good 👍
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai22 күн бұрын
It holds water for long enough to lengthen the watering time to the planting. It works pretty well. I would love to see you try something similar.

I was sure there would be others that have made similar comments. The branch was otherwise healthy, but looked ridiculous!

Bald cypress will definitely keep you busy with the pruning Steve. They grow like weeds. Mine shoot out multiple branches from the same spot all up and down the trunk. Makes choosing a final design confusing for me. I like the way your Penjing is developing. Thanks, keep growing
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai22 күн бұрын
Thanks Matt. I’m finding that out. The fact that they produce branches so readily is what I am counting on for the design to evolve over time.

Those grass weeds are terrible. I have pulled them out also and a lot of soil came out with it. Had to fill in the hole. At least it came out better than mine.
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai22 күн бұрын
This weed surprised me with how easily it came out.

Hi Steve Leptinella potentillina loves a lot of water that is probably why it looked sad on your penjing I have done the same in the UK it has rained every other day sometimes for 2 or3 in a row and this year it’s grown well because trees are not drying soil out that’s probably why in a pot on its own it’s flourishing
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai20 күн бұрын
Thanks John. I thought the planting had been getting enough water, but I guess it wasn’t enough for all the trees, the moss, and the Leptinella.

I think the cart you have your bonsai on is the source of the vertigo issue people are having. it wobbles. That in combination with the rotating makes for a shaky presentation. Maybe a simple 2x4 table to put your bonsai on would help. Just my 2 cents. I mean 3.3 cents with inflation.
@Steves_Backyard_Bonsai22 күн бұрын
I am mindful of the issue.

Hey Steve, what kind of cut paste are you using? I couldn't quite understand what it is.

I’ve been using TiteBond wood glue. It seems to do a good job. I will use TiteBond until, and unless it fails in my opinion, as was the case with ShoeGoo. Hope you are doing well Mary.
