I bought a cheap 4 jaw independent chuck, but it was not a pleasure to use. By cleaning and deburring the chuck, I made it a bit better!

Totally agree with cleaning and rebuilding. Very cathartic and enjoyable.

Yes, consider these tools as a pre machined kit that you must finish. I bet you have more time in the rebuild than the whole thing cost. Enjoyed the video. Keep this up.

My 4 jaw has a similar provenance, and similar issues. I've added to my 'to do' list 👍 🇬🇧

Hi Olly. I quite enjoy “fettling” as the effort is definitely rewarded. You gave a great example of how to “improve” the Chinese 4 jaw chuck with patience and care. Now, why do I have the urge to give my own chucks a good clean 🤔 👏👏👍😀

Well done Olly, great job, looks really serviceable now. Amazing that those screw threads were so obviously inconsistent, but then again .... Well at least it now works as it should do. Great video, thanks once again!! and good luck from Spain!!

I checked my chuck and it had the same over cut square thread key bolts. A second chuck I had, had an excellent set, so I swapped it out and now have a super 4 jaw chuck. Thanks and glad I found your channel!! 😊😊

I rarely use 4 jaws these days because I end up doing the whole tappy tap indicating with my 3 jaw most of the time to get within 0.01mm or better run-out. This is what I do with chucks when I get them: deburred, cleaned and then as you showed "lapped" by sliding the jaws, rotating the screws and scroll (for scroll chucks), then cleaned again, oiled (or greased) then reassembled. Even the better quality Taiwanese imports have casting or grinding dust in them 😐

A good job done there Olly, I generally wrap my chucks in clingfilm after cleaning up and put them on the shelf... especially the one I don't use to much.

Thanks for the tip Paul. It will keep the surface rust from forming.

Paraffin = kerosene for those of us in the U.S. Here paraffin is wax.

Paraffin here in Australia (and probably UK) is distilled kerosene, less smelly. If you need something that doesn't stink up the shed, odourless unscented lamp oil is the way to go.

The Chinese are the worst when it comes to details. I've seen horror stories of brand new jet lathes with casting sand still inside cast iron gearboxes! We are all suckers for a cheap deal, me included.🤣

Just wondering if the machining of the thread section of each jaw was as haphazard as the screws, and if so could you have matched the screws to jaws for best fit?

Hi Bob, the jaws seemed much more even than the screws, I think the jaw threads may have been cast in features with minimal machining. There was no visible variation like the screws. I may make some new screws at some point, the originals look like they were cut (torn) with a very blunt tool.

How often do you replace the oil in the lathe gearbox?
@ollysworkshop
@ollysworkshop Жыл бұрын
Mine replaces itself! Well does half the job anyway. There's a leak somewhere that I need to fix. I must admit it's been running dry for a while now, but I do disengage the gear train when I'm not using it. To answer your question though, probably worth changing the oil a couple of times to get any left over manufacturing grot out, but really with the amount of use it gets on a hobby lathe it probably doesn't need changing. Once every 5 years would probably be plenty as the oil might absorb water from the air.
