This hard drive arrived opened, and as usual, this adds more issues to the data recovery process. During the initial inspection, we noticed fairly large deposits of contamination on disk surfaces that most likely made their way into the drive during DIY attempt to recover data. In the last year or so, we actively started cleaning heads on hard drives that click, as opposed to the basic swap. Original heads if brought back to life can perform as good as new, and it avoids the need for a donor (which can be expensive if the hard drive is rare). During the detailed inspection, we discovered some permanent platter damage on 2 out of 4 surfaces that could jeopardize success of potential partial recovery. The head assembly was degreased and cleaned with 99.9% alcohol. To give this drive a standing chance at getting some data back from it, 2 out of 4 heads were decapitated to eliminate the drag and further platter dust accumulation.

Excellent demonstration of expert techniques to fix/clean faulty disk drive heads by disassembly in a clean environment. Brought back memories of replacing and aligning heads on damaged big server disks many years ago. Those days we had to manually tweak repaired drive heads using an oscilloscope to obtain best dibit/tribit waveform patterns to optimise data retrieval signal amplitudes for error-free data transfers to/from the disk. Nice job.

Really like your vids on how you engage your troubleshooting and fixing skills, while explaining it all. Keep it up! Question: I work in the semi-conductor industry and for cleaning we also use 99IPA, but if it can't be cleaned with IPA we use ultra-pure acetone. Have you ever tried that on the heads or would that not be possible due to the head-material?

Or is it something you simply didn't have to care about at this stage as it will be dealt with in the hot-swap video? A video about cleaning platters would be much appreciated as well. Also, I have a question that probably you mentioned. when you extract the platter you don care of the aligment of one respect the other. This wont screw the drive, or tools have gone far that it is not longer needed and you can dump just the raw magnetic data from platters and the use a tool to reassemble the platter data into one drive again ?. Cheers.

How do I verify the correct orientation. I mean, if I insert the disk upside down, will it still work? Also, is there a way to repair the heads as I do not have any similar hardrive in the same family. My harddrive is Seagate 500 GB

You mentioned buffing. Does that remove the protruding burrs associated with scratches? If the protruding high points could be "knocked down" to be level with the proper surface of the platter, could a head be used to recover data elsewhere on the platter? I'm surprised ultrasonic cleaning was ineffective. I would expect 40khz cleaning frequencies would damage the micro sized features (they definitely kill inkjet print heads) and that higher frequencies would be used perhaps as high as 90khz or even higher.

You can’t...either this was a demonstration on a drive that would never see service again, or he was only going to pull data off the lower platter. When removing platter stacks, you need to lock them together to maintain orientation. Once lost, it’s impossible to get back.

Hey me again, i'd love to see how the disks are decontaminated and how to modify the head assembly to remove heads. I'd also like to know about the posibility of read a disk with scratches on it whether it is very difficult or even possible. I have 2 drives here 1 with contanimination and it takes ages to detect on my pc. I opened it up and noticed some fluff on the top disk so i blew it off in a clean hood and tried again. After that i heard a horrible scratch sound so cut the power straight away. I then couldn't figure out what caused the scratching noise so powered it up again and it the noise had gone but still wouldn't detect. The 2nd drive i have the disk has quite a few scratches on the top surface and only 1 head as it's an old 8GB one. I'd love to know if there was a way to get a partial recovery from it as before it "got scratched" i had purchased a donar drive for it to try and repair. Again i'm learning so i have been messing up alot and i scratch them and destroy head assembleys like crazy.

Use a positive filtered box I open the drive and gently lift the heads off the drive and bring them over to the plastic parking zone. Isopropyl clean the heads and just rinse everything without a brush or applicator. 90% successful recoveries. The ones that are mangled or the filter is full of magnetic media dust I close back up

I'd be curious to know more about platter positioning. I know way back in DIY videos they describe using scotch tape to keep the platters aligned. But I'm curious to know more details of what kind of tolerances are we dealing with. How much offset can you have before the drive will freak out? What are your techniques for keeping platters aligned? Is it possible to realign platters without knowing their original position? I think an in-depth video, with trials and examples of platters aligned correctly, and platters misaligned would also be very informative.

@@ekon01cz yeah I noticed the marks on a number of videos, which suggests the tolerances give you a fairly wide margin of error for such a precious piece of mechanics. By now you have done a little too much alone and you will certainly have caused more problems to your HDD. These kinds of situations are what DRs want to avoid as much as possible, i'm sorry to say that but is the true. I can answer to you that you can't swap heads or any other part from a certain manufactered drive to another manufactered drive (as you mentioned from seagate to WD), also is need to match particular stuffs as part of DCM code, manufactered country, production date (or very close to patient), head map, rom micro-code and microjogs (close as much as possible to patient). No possible to have success without proper knowledge, instruments, experience. Also, powering on a drive without his cover is a very bad idea.

@@VillageTechTree Do you really care about your data? If yes then you should send your hdd to a professional DR, you might send it to Erkin. As you have opened the cover, platters need to be cleaned and most likely heads need to be swapped by searching a proper donor by matching those parametes that i've mentioned above. Without tools and "know how" you can't find a proper donor. Also, heads might have created scratches on platter surface due to dust, head moving without the cover etc...

Your monolog is the biggest bunch of baloney and hogwash that I have ever heard. It sounds technical and intimidating, but it's pure balogna. And NO, you cannot just take out the platters and play with them, and then put them back in and expect your HD to have any chance of working again, and NO you cannot just rub some alcohol on the heads. THat's just nonsense. You are a great salesman, stick to sales not tech.
