This is how I clean my Stihl MS170 chainsaw after every full day of use. It has been suggested that I might be overdoing it. I also show you how I assemble and tension my bar and chain.

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with having pride in your things and the AMBITION to take care of them. I also have an MS170 to limb with and it is a FANTASTIC saw when it has a good sharp chain. Perfect weight and power for limbing in general. And your video is just how it’s done!

Agree, nice little saw. It's like a small dog with big dog attitude.

I have done that very thing after a day of use. I pull the bar and chain, clean the bar grove, if the chain has a lot of sap or resin, I have a cleaner that will soften and break it loose, then I lightly brush it clean. I take compressed air and clean the cooling fins on the power head, clean the air filter, then fill up the chain oil reservoir, and fill up the gas tank. I then put the bar and chain back on, grease the nose sprocket, adjust the chain tension, fire it up and make sure the chain is getting oil and all is working properly. Then I am ready for the next day if need be. My saw was bought brand new back in the mid 1960s and today, it still looks and runs as good as it did the first day I fired it up. It is a Homelite Super XL AO, with a 16" bar. I have saved the original bar, chain, and clutch and have a more modern and up to date assembly with a sprocket nose bar, and a semi chisel chain instead of the original Oregon Chipper Chain and hard nose bar.

Got into chainsaws earlier this year and now have several, including pro, and just built an MS200T from parts. Coming from other technologies, I was appalled to see that virtually no one cleans filthy saws before working on them. It's probably all time and money but I've never seen car guys do this. Today, however, if you go in with a dirty engine, you'll come out with a dirty engine and a shiny new oil filter (for example). A good garage may suggest an engine cleaning, which will cost ya, but at least they offer. So, good job, keep it up! You will not damage anything. Just keep strong corrosives away from metal components and strong solvents away from plastic, hoses, etc. The saws are pretty tolerant but will last even longer when clean. And, WD-40 is your friend when saws are wet. WD-40 is not that great for lubrication or protection but was designed for displacing water from internal spaces. This and compressed air is good stuff!

I have cleaned my Tanaka until today because the chain was dull . I wish they still built them so well. I will clean more often now that they sold out. So I probably won’t be able to get quality parts: my science is to flip the bar every time the chain needs sharpening helps to prevent uneven wear

Oh thank god I am not the only person who gets mentally screwed with a tangled chain. P.S I also have a MS170.

Same here. I’ve cut certain woods in the past that just packed out the inside of my clutch plate. I had no idea until I just happened to pull the plate off for some other reason. I felt so guilty for being so negligent with my chain saw. Never again.

Maybe it is overkill, maybe it isn't. Who cares? If YOU prefer to keep the saw clean, that's freedom (to choose) baby! Still, if you are using the saw multiple days in a row, I'd wait until you're all done, then give it a good cleaning. FWIW, I always clean mine after using it (which is fairly infrequent).

It's NOT overkill to clean the saw after use. I do the same. Get frustrated if i use my dad's saw that has probably never bee'n cleaned
