Here's a video on how I clean and restore my engine parts. For the valve covers I painted the aluminum and for the supercharger surge tanks I just cleaned and polished up the aluminum. Both ways turned out well

Nice work! Looks great! Looking forward to hearing your rebuild engine roar to life, especially that supercharger whine sound.

nice job bro, personally I spend a lottttt of time when it comes to painting, I did my supercharger in Ferrari textured mat red and then everything around it including the surge tanks in semi glossy black, I find it really amazing to paint things after giving them a nice restoration or cleaning them.

Easiest way to clean and give it a factory look is to use wd-40 or some other type of penetrating oil.... and... an assortment of bronze wire brushes. I don't know why - but it removes oil, and the bronze bristles don't attack the aluminum. Usually leaves it with the factory gray look - which I prefer.

So you hose down the parts flushing all those chemicals into what? The driveway and down into the sewers?
@boostaddict_4 жыл бұрын
@@minibikelife1062 yeah.

wd40 has naptha and mineral oil basically. The naptha will get the light oils off, and the heavier soil are actually soluble in the mineral oil (like chemical dissolve like chemicals.) And the bronze(brass) bristles arent as hard as steel and wont scratch the aluminum.

Also, spray a little silicone lube spray on the Clean aluminum after. It fills the pores of the aluminum so it doesn't stain as easy!

The WD40-dremel trick is awesome, gets into all the nooks and crannies and comes out like new. Thanks

Hands down, the best way to clean parts like that, is to spray them down with a thick coat of heavy duty Easy Off oven cleaner and lay them out in the sun to get warm. You don't have to do any work at all and the crud will just hose off in about 30 minutes. You might have to repeat one or two times for really nasty stuff but it gets in all of the tiny cracks and crevices. I love this trick. It will definitely eat the paint off of parts though so take caution on painted parts. Powder coated parts usually resist the process fairly well. If you have some potassium hydroxide solution (or liquid Drano) it's pretty much the same thing and it will accomplish the same goal. SO MUCH EASIER!

too bad this comment hasnt reached the top of the comments. HANDS DOWN correct. I had a chevy 12 bolt rear end from a 72 chevelle i was restoring, and it was covered in oil and grime and u name it, i used EASY OFF, and man, it ate all the oil, grime, and all the LAYERS of paint that this thing had on it, i had no clue it was even layered with colors of paint. there was white paint hidden lower in the layers, etc. anyway point being, this stuff is ABSO FUCKING LUTELY AMAZING. now, one small thing, small spray getting on ur legs or arms or anything will start to itch/burn within less than 20 secs usually, and u will def cough if u inhale any of the fumes or mist, it is TOXIC AF. i also don't know how the product interacts with magnesium or aluminium. Also, theres stuff called naval jelly that is really good but mostly for rust.

did you paint the valve cover breathers after resealing them or before?

That's major patience. I just take my stuff to a powder coater even if it's to just have the oil/dirt baked off then blasted. Guaranteed to be clean.

@Leonardo555ZZZ5 жыл бұрын
Nice work,,well done,,not being picky ,but just to let you know, the valve covers are made from Magnesium , not Aluminium.

Hello there....nice video. Very helpful - what colour paint was that Duplicolor you used that looks like aluminium? If I could get the part number, that would be awesome. Thanks much.

Those VC came out nice. I think the SC surge tanks would look nice black, with red lettering. As you can see from my videos- I like a painted, clean powertrain. My next revision of it won't be so "cartoonish" though.
@xfmotorsports5 жыл бұрын
Yeh, I like the idea. I didn't want to do too much on the surge tanks because I'll end up replacing them later when I move the turbos to the front. Maybe I'll try something for the next manifold
@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP5 жыл бұрын
Have you ever considered this? kzfaq.info?search_query=rear+mount+turbo No need for an Intercooler. No lag. No coking. Longer turbo bearing life. More discreet. Cleaner, cooler temp engine bay. Only "drawback" is a somewhat expensive oil scavenge pump (cheaper alternatives to DIY). I think it would complement the SC quite well.
@xfmotorsports5 жыл бұрын
I had those on my previous setup actually. It worked well but had a lot of problems with exhaust welds breaking off. I was using it with the supercharger so lag wasn't an issue but turbos were definitely slow to spool up until the exhaust got up to temperature. Front mount is definitely a better option if turbos can be fitted up front

Thank you for your reply. That sucks you had bad experiences with it; it sounded like a good idea in the many videos of it.

While your still young at doing this "cleaning" procedure, you might want to reconsider the use to a Dremal tool to clean parts while spraying flammable solvents in close proximity to the tool. A single small spark, at just the right moment, could "light up" your whole world , including this KZfaq channel. PS a simple throw away paint brush will do practically the same thing as the Dremal tool only slightly slower but will get into tighter areas.

I would have expected the arc between the armature and brushes in that dremel motor to ignite the gasoline vapor and liquid in the valve cover..obviously that didn't occur this time - maybe it's a brushless dremel? or maybe you are just lucky.
@xfmotorsports5 жыл бұрын
Yeh, working with gasoline is not the safest thing. Same goes for acetone and all other flammables. That said gasoline doesn't really ignite as easy as the movies make it seem. Believe it or not, fuel pumps have brush motors and in most cars they are inside the fuel tank. You usually need a pretty big spark or an open flame to ignite it

Just little heads up 400 grit doesn't help paint stick better it's the beginning polish hone vs scratch hone the lower the grit the more open the pores are aka more porosity sucks in paint more
@zeomarmob4 жыл бұрын
Tried this before... the paint will flake off in a year or two, if you don't remove those dark spots from oxidation. Its better to sand blast this whole thing, then the paint will stick for a long time.

All this time and effort mucking about with the engine. You could have achieved the same power to weight ratio by simply removing the rear and passenger seat... Also, I've seen nothing regarding the brakes. More important than making a car that's fast is making one that can stop fast...

do you really need to upgrade the brakes on a E55?
