I like your system. I picked up a perfect donor vhs from the thrift store too. I found a vhs that works, but only has mono sound which is pretty useless for video capturing, but it'd be perfect for cleaning tapes.

Thank you for this I got a lot of tapes in yesterday that had a few tapes with mold but are worth saving definitely one thing I'm nervous about is taking the tape apart

I had some tapes in the garage for years that got mould inside, these were really important tapes that I thought would never come back but they did!!!! I did exactly as you showed and they play smooth as ever, can't thank you enough!

A bit of advice: if those tapes are valuable to you, even irreplaceable, get your tapes digitized ASAP. I had a few home video tapes, riddled with mold. Got them cleaned up, using a VHS rewinder, applying the same method with the alcohol as shown here. I immediately got the contents transferred to digital, using an old HDD recorder, and saved it onto archival quality DVD-Rs. And good thing I did that, too. The tape itself had also fallen victim to sticky tape syndrome, which is even more problematic than mold. Once a tape gets that, you don't really get to play that tape over and over again.

Great video vhs tapes don't stop playing at all everything proven vhs tapes don't lock up at all like internet does in the future

I cleaned the some 20 years old tape like you did, but the headers keep getting clogged, It plays like 10 minutes fine and other times like 2 minutes and then video disappears, only audio keeps playing, so I clean the headers again and dirt comes out, play the tape again , it plays fine again for a couple of minutes more, and it gets clogged again, my tapes aren't even that bad, do you think the headers are bad or the tapes are too old?

It sounds like your tapes are very dirty.

This procedure will not work with tapes that have sticky tape syndrome. That is very common with moldy tapes.

I need your suggestion here: I have two AMPEX 188 Beta tapes that are sticky when they are playing and dirty the rotating heads and posts inside my good Sont Beta player.. When I look at these tapes, the sides of the bobins that have tapes (looking thru the clear plastic tops) are not showing any molds at all.. very clean, but when these tapes play they 'contaminate' all the paths the tapes are going thru.. So, Would your technics work with these 'sticky' tapes to remove the sticking substance that accumulated over time but keep the actual video data ?

I have not tried this on any Beta tapes. I would try it on one that you don't care about first.

So did you try this on VHS tapes ? Format doesn't matter.. The thing I need to know is a good way to get rid of the stickiness on any video tapes (that don't have mold at all) ??@@RetroGamingWithHopper

@@jpdesroc use a food dehydrator. but do your research first. idk at what temperature you have to bake the tape.

You should clean them up, I'm sure they are worth a lot more then music videos. We put 4 on them.

Why’d you blow on the cartridge with all the fungus I’d be blowing that stuff off in the trash or outside not in your home. Also, the mold on the rag you should’ve thrown that out. You don’t want any of that stuff in your home crawling around.

bought of a lot of 350 moldy as heck vhs tapes lot of a grandma who ran a videostore in the late 80's and earfly 90's this will take forever
