I AM NOT A MECHANIC, THIS VIDEO ABOUT BRAKES IS FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY !
SEEK ADVIE FROM A QUALIFIED VEHICLE TECHNICIAN
UPDATE JANUARY 2023: TO AVOID CONFUSION PLEASE DO NOT USE ANTI SIEZE GREASE ON YOUR CALIPER BOLTS A VIEWER POINTED THIS OUT, YEARS OF BEING MISINFORMED ON MY PART. VIDEO WILL BE EDITED TO REMOVE THAT REFERENCE.
My new 2022 BMW R1250GS has covered 2900 miles in 7 months
I have the HAYES callipers at the front and a Brembo to the rear.
2 weeks ago the front brakes started to screech when I came to a stop.
Very annoying.
Took me 40 minutes to dismantle , clean and reinstall the front brake callipers .
The only grease etc I used was Copper Grease on the calliper bolts.Advice from my local dealer.
There was no need to sand the discs/pads.
JUST A GOOD OLD CLEAN.
Brakes are now screech free.
00:00-01:54 Introduction
01:54-02:45 Tools needed
02:45-07:32 Removing the front caliper's
07:32-13:28 Let the cleaning commence
13:28-19:53 Putting it all back
19:53-21:37 That's a wrap then .
I didn’t need a front paddock stand, it just helped to spin the front wheel for cleaning the disc .
I used Muc off brake cleaner:

Thank you for making these very good videos for us to use as help, keep up the good work you do mate 😊👍 I found that the Brembo caliper-cylinder's in the back moved in more easily and smooth than the Hayes did in the front...after cleaning that is! Sheers from Sweden

Hi David . Thanks . The stand was a Tech 7 stand from UK supplier M and P accessories. About £47 . Used it when I did track days on Fireblade , long gone ! Works fine with my KTM and GS . 👍

Interesting video & tutorial, as always. I noticed the back brake is Brembo & not a Hayes. BMW should try & keep all their brakes Brembo. Is there a shortage of Brembo brakes available or has BMW been using Hayes brakes for some time. Looking forward to Part 2. Thanks again for all your great content!

Just finished doing part 2, just got to edit it. Brembo is owned by Hayes or something like that. To be honest I would like to see Brembo on the front, but the Hayes ones are very very good.

I popped a piston out 🤦🏼‍♂️ managed to get it back in. Quite different from the Tokiko calipers which are two pot so the pistons are longer and can come out further. The pads were ceased in place my fault for not cleaning them for a year! Found with the EBC pads there is very little clearance between the pad and caliper. Will have to bleed the system now to get the air out…

So why are the breaks making the screeching noise? mine started to do this recently as well. I thought it was because of the brake pads but here you are cleaning the caliper and pistons. what is the reason they screetch to begin with? and can't you use a pressure jet washer to clean them while they are still attached? thanks!
@gsd32i

Hi, it may have been when I cleaned the bike recently, I used a pre-wash spray before I washed the bike, so that may have had something to do with it... but I don't know TBH. Possibly lack of going at higher speeds so not getting brakes up to higher temperatures...but who knows! All I know is that they were screeching and now, after the caliper(quite dirty) and pad clean, the bike is nice and quiet. Took the bike out today and all good from front and rear . My opinion is that the brakes are a vital part of your machine and on all my bikes, I have always cleaned the calipers and pads and don't leave it to the yearly /2 yearly service inspection. Plus its always good to have a cup of tea and some biscuits , put the tv on in the man cave and enjoy working on your bike. 👍

You can copper paste the back side of the pads as well, supposedly it ll eliminate or reduce squeeking. The pistons wont be cleaned this thoroughly by the dealer so its good to do so yourself and lube them up when you're done. 'Just the way it Is' also has a great video about cleaning the brakes EP3 with a ducati multistrada.

3:43 important question mate, you said the Torx socket was a size 6 but from research I found 2 sites stating (E8) which I bought a couple of yesterday when I found out I couldn’t take the pins out… could you when you get a chance or anyone reading this pop a reply asap please. 🙏🏼🍻
@gsd32i
@gsd32i 6 ай бұрын
I have had a look at the video and I used a 6mm normal socket just to release them , easier when the caliber is still mounted. Didn't have a torx e8, no issue using the 6mm. There is a clip on the back which you need to remove.....then the pin comes out.

@@gsd32i Thanks for your prompt reply I truly appreciate it. Hmmm interesting I tried a hex 6 socket wouldn't go on so tried 7 but that slipped off so I stopped. Luckily I saw the circlips on the back of the opposite caliper guess it's just E8 will be delivered tmrw that will give me the peace of mind that I won't be rounding the pin head. Cheers mate.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I just want to mention that Brake cleaner might an effective cleanera. However, I would like to mention that it is aggressive towards rubber and should not be used to directly clean the caliper pistons as the rubber seals can be damaged easily with the Brake cleaner. Hot soapy water and a toothbrush is effective and sufficiant. I also want to mention that copper grease is not advisable on the caliper Bolts, as they should remain tight at all times! I know you are not a trained mechanic and I'm not trying to annoy you but I believe you might just be a little off track giving untrained tips which could potentially risk a life. Please just give this a little thought! Thanks Joe

Hi. Thanks for the comments I really appreciate them. The brake cleaner is fine on the calipers as stated by the manufacturer. However , in relation to the brake caliper bolts, it is anti seize and not grease, but I may have been misinformed somewhere down the line...so when you respond to this I think I will remove the video and edit that out. Thanks again for informing me , ride safe. 👍

@@gsd32i Thanks for the mature approach and reaction. Some people say that it is a 50/50 choice so as to ensure an easy dismantle in the future. This is wrong, as the torque settings on a greased Bolt will require adjustment ,so as not to over fasten! It is unfortunate that the latest GS has the Hayes Brakes, not because they are not good, but the Pads require the caliper removal in order to access. The Brembo Brake Caliper had access by just one Pin and Clip, which in my eyes was better as those Bolts can be work sometimes. Thanks again and I'll keep watching.

Hello, nice Video. But DO NOT use a Brake Cleaner for the brake holder, they will destroy the seals inside!
@gsd32i
@gsd32i Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, loads of people use Brake cleaner on the calipers/pistons etc and the "Muc off" is safe for all braking parts. MCN recently did a how to clean your brake and they used brake cleaner too. May be the chemical composition has changed to not harm the seals.Soap and water is cheaper though.

@@gsd32i @chrisd3394 Excellent 'how to' video, as usual, thanks. But, have to say whether loads of people use muc-off brake disc cleaner liberally all over the caliper pistons or not, or MCN did it, (does anyone at MCN have a degree in chemistry?) does not mean it is a good thing to do This spray is up to 25% acetone, it says so on the product data safety sheet. Despite this you can find it on the net actually advertised by some retailers as being 'acetone-free'. It stinks of acetone - good for nail polish removal, bad for plastics and for many synthetic rubbers and therefore some seals. Used carefully (not least because it is bad for humans - and other animals - and highly explosive as an aerosol in enclosed spaces) to clean rotors and pads, it's obviously safe enough. Soapy water harmless!
