Cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor in a Subaru 2.5i Legacy or Outback

In this video I am showing how to locate and clean the mass airflow sensor in a fuel injected car or truck. The car that I am doing the job on is a 2013 Subaru Legacy with a 2.5l four cylinder engine but this same process will work in any car with fuel injection. In this video, we will first locate the sensor and then go through the process of removing the mass airflow sensor and cleaning it. Symptoms of a dirty mass airflow sensor include rough idle, poor or jerky acceleration, and difficulty starting. This is a job that anyone with some mechanical confidence can perform in their driveway.

Good video. I cleaned mine already in the same manner on my 2005 Forester 2.5 SOHC. The part that you sprayed in the video was the IAT ( Intake Air Temperature) sensor. The MAF ( Mass Air Flow) sensor is inside the plastic housing. It's a dual sensor. So I took it back off the sprayed inside. Hope this helps someone. The cost of that sensor for my car is $212

There are 2-3 wires hidden away inside the plastic body of the MAFS, these should also be cleaned, that is the actual sensor. The other guy is right, you just cleaned an IAT temperature sensor, as it is really 2 sensors in one.

Excellent video. I watched intently and just couldn’t seem to get to my idle problem. I recently had the alternator replaced and they apparently knocked off a vacuum hose near the alternator. I finally saw the problem and BOOM! That was it. Simple fix.

The Alcohol Headsup Really Helped Me, I Googled It And I Put The Sensor Inside A Ziploc Bag With Alcohol, Shaked It For Like 3 Mins, let it sit inside the bag for like 5 mins, let it dry for like an hour, i also wiped the thing gently and it responds way better now and idle its somewhat better

My stage 2+ flex fuel tuned wrx was on the dyno Fri...Just had the chance to go WOT today, and noticed an intermittent hesitation at 5500+ rpms...Almost like a mild misfire but no CEL...After banging my head, and thinking it may be a boost creep fuel cut (would be bad!) I decided to check the maf and map sensor...MAP was FILTHY DIRTY from oil vapors, most likely from before i installed my AOS, TGV/EGR deletes...Gently cleaned her with maf cleaner and a tiny FINE paint brush...Runs like a champ now...I hope it was just a fluke, and that it doesnt come back tomorrow..lol

I used a razor scraper on mine to remove that black gunk on the end. The wire broke off so I soldered it back on. The car runs better than ever! My milage has been better than it ever has! I lost the screws and used hot glue to hold it on with but it popped off so I used Orange RTV on it. I got it all over the end of it when I dropped it in the dirt. It didnt seem to hurt anything. I also superglued the connector on because I broke the tab so the connector holder off. I got too much superglue on it and now the tube wont come off for the air filter. Its ok because I never change my air filter.

Hmm. If it has a cvt transmission it could be a downshifting issue which may be a transmission controller valve body issue. They program these transmissions for fuel efficiency so hard that it takes out all the spunk. It's like starting in second gear I find often with the newer subarus.

@@CoolStuffGuysLike - I’ve found that if I pump the gas very slightly 5-15 times I can get it to speed up quicker (to a point). But when doing that, it sometimes doesn’t change gears. The fuel system (or sth) doesn’t respond - or sth else goes on or doesn’t and even with the little pumps the RPMs just go higher and higher. Yes the car is still accelerating somewhat like normal except the RPMs are wicked high. Of course I back off all of the way at that point until it normalizes. By that point the need to speed up quickly is over and the operation of pressing on the gas pedal just returns to normal. The RPMs go down to normal and that bout with slothliness is over. Until the next intersection.

He cleans the wrong sensor in the video.. what you need is up the hole way toward the top of the assembly. You'll need a flashlight to see them and use the maf cleaner and something you can reach un with a soft brush.. be careful not to push or snap them. Good luck.

That's the Maf hot wire not the signal wire that relays air density information back to the lack to tell the injectors to spray more fuel to mix with that current air fuel ratio.
@ldurey
@ldurey 3 жыл бұрын
My guy.. that's not the MAF sensor you show you're spraying.. it's a heat sensor that's coincidentally housed nearby it and will affect nothing airflow-wise. The MAF sensor is two ~1cm tiny wires hidden up the hole in the tube; use a flashlight to see em. You need to spray up the tube and let it dry thoroughly. Best of luck.

It could be a tire balance or driveline issue. If it surges or bogs during acceleration it could be the MAS. You might have a broken belt in a tire. That seems pretty slow to start getting a shake.

Rubbing alcohol should be fine, I used to be an Apple repair tech and we submerged logic boards in tubs of rubbing alcohol overnight to clean them. MAF sensor should be fine. [Edit:] for the record, I used MAF cleaner a few days ago for my sensor and not alcohol. I also used the MAF spray on my PCV valve and it worked pretty damn good

On the 08-14 legacy and outback that is the mass airflow sensor (Denso Part Number: 22680AA38A). I believe it also measures air temp but the part is listed as "Mass Airflow Sensor". The only other sensor along the intake is the MAP sensor but that is on the other end of the throttle body.
@hydn79
@hydn79 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I should have said that's the right part. But it has two sensors. The easily visible sensor on the outside measures air temp but the sensor that help with MPG is actually deep inside that part. You can clean the same way also see: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qpOCeMqdsZjYp5s.htmlm48s (for general idea of location on a *similar* sensor) The air temp sensor isn't really affected by a lil dirt but the other sensor is extremely sensitive and thus why its hidden. What you are cleaning here ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y5dxq9qlvcm9Z30.htmlm39s) is the AIR TEMP sensor.
