Hey, Robert! Just a quick add to the throttle body cleaning video. I had done the throttle body cleaning about 20k miles/a year ago per this video and all of the sudden, when my girlfriend borrowed the car (2011 Outback 2.5), it started to hesitate upon take off...but only when the AC was on. No fault codes or anything. Acted almost like torque converter slippage 😖but I had removed the valve body, replaced the solenoids and replaced ALL of the CVT fluid after having done a thorough fluid swap out (drained/filled/drained after 3k miles/filled again) prior to the Christmas lights coming on, so...🤞🤞🤞 Turned out to be a dirty MAF sensor! Cleaned it and when I inspected the throttle body, pulled the MAP sensor and cleaned that, too. Did the idle relearn procedure (thanks!) and all is good once again. I was really surprised I was getting no codes though. Thought this may help someone.

Thank you for this information, also as you do the cleaning also always check the air filter. Mine was displaying check engine light and was still hesitating after all the cleanup until i replaced the air filter. This was after diagnosis that reported RICH AIR-FUEL mixture meaning less air much fuel. If it reports LEAN AIR-FUEL mixture, its time to check the fuel filter.

I have an 02 forester , similar symptoms but mine feel like the back diff is trying to catch up with the front diff, like my gear gets stuck on high rpm or like if it was stick and I down shifted but once I step on the gas it pulls /jumps forward. I replaced the trans, fluids filters and still same. But I don’t think my year has a maf sensor, I’m going to try the map /tps sensors, clean the throttle body plus add a K&N filter, read some where that helped them

2010 Forester, 218,000 miles. Rough idle, sometimes die at a stop. This procedure gave me back a smooth idle, engine doesn't die at stops. Took maybe 30 minutes. Inside of the throttle plate looked like the bottom of a tar bucket. Probably doesn't help it uses a quart of oil every 500 miles. But it's paid for and reliable.

Hey MrSubaru, I have a question about the other end of the air intake. Do you think the second (charcoal) filter at the filter box should be serviced, other than a new assembly since it's fixed in place. How would you do it.... silicone dabs to reinstall if removed, or...? We drive on seven miles of dirt/rock dusty mountain roads before pavement, so I don't want to just remove it as others have suggested. I'm going to use the shop vac on it for now. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I love this channel because I learn so much. Question: I have the 2010 Forester EJ253 SOHC. Is it direct injected or port injected? I'm asking because it seems to me that the main reason to do this cleaning (as opposed to a simpler throttle body cleaning alone) is to clean the carbon buildup on the valves. If the engine is port injected it shouldn't have that buildup. Or am I wrong? Thanks, and Happy New Year!

Can you elaborate on this? My idle is rough when AC is off. Turn AC on and it runs fine.

Feels like it is going to stall at stop light unless air is ON. Thanks!

@@kellyradcliff1748 that's strange.. I had the opposite. In hot weather there seemed to be a shortage of airflow through the throttle body with AC on, so cleaning it made the airflow better.

I have a sticky throttle and it feels like it is from the spring assembly outside the throttle body, but after cleaning and oil it is still sticky. I am thinking I will need to clean the inside to get a smoother throttle response? Do you have any experience with this? thanks

Hello! Thanks for the video :-) Would this be the same on a 2010 Legacy (non-turbo)?

Yes. Basically identical.

I cleaned throttle body and pushed the flap with my hand to get in the corners... Re installed and the engine hunts and cuts off especially in reverse. What you think can be the problem? And how do i reset the idle?

I have a question about the procedure for cleaning the Throttle Body. My car: 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Auto. When you clean the Throttle Body can you Physically (with finger) open the butterfly or will this Hurt/Damage the Throttle Body Gears? I look forward to hearing from you, if at all possible. Mike

Thanks for the video! Is the procedure roughly the same for the turbo models? Also would your recommend using a part washer or is that too sketchy with the electronic components of the throttle body?
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 жыл бұрын
I'd go the rag, brush, and throttle body cleaner route, wouldn't use the parts washer.

Thanks again for this one. I just did this cleaning but looked inside the manifold when I took the throttle body off and everything inside is just as black and gunky! Does that all need to be cleaned as well?

It would be nice, but kind of hard to perform without removing the intake manifold. Not really a necessary procedure.

Hi there I just installed a water return line lifted up engine just enough to get it in it did move a very little to the right but not much! I did disconnect the harnesses from engine block! I cleaned up the throttle body and sprayed the mass air flow sensor now it will not start sounds like when you pulled the fuse for the fuel pump!! It did start before!! I did take it off to clean I didn’t replace anything just cleaned now will not turn over! I might have disconnected something but wouldn’t I get a code? I just got a blue driver but if car doesn’t start I cant read live data!! Can you please try to help narrow this down!? From cleaning would the engine need to be reprogrammed, seeing I unplugged and cleaned it up! I could have missed something but not too sure!! Any advice would be great!!!

I have the nemesis code P0420, Just cleaned the MAF, and will do this as well. I'm hoping like hell I don't have to replace the manifold. Anything else that I can check or fix before I go the expensive route? Car is running but its running rough, Almost like its starving for gas.

does anyone know what that air box in the front right fender does? like the air goes through the front channel to fender area then from there to intake chamber but in the fender area there is also this random box it goes to/through. Any ideas?

Very good, I'll try this for my 2005 Forester that went "throttle unresponsive" this evening. Could you also have lubricated either side of plate (shaft) with oil? My code read (throttle position sensor) I may have to check voltage readings with a fluke but this will provide for a good start! Much appreciated!

Update; it worked. I also cleaned the MAF sensor. I did not oil the shaft as I was fearful it would travel along the shaft and run into the attached sensor. I understand first would be the spring void cavity but suffice it to say the throttle plate was very free.

Thank you for the video - I guess I wonder why not just spray some CarbCleaner in the intake and let the stuff drip off....am I wrong in this thinking??

Hi, i know it's good step to cleant it, but in my old mondeo mk3, when I I cleaned it ones, RPM started to "swimming", and noone could repair it, so now i'm sceptic. Even i bought another throttle body, but i didnt help. Now i have H6 and would like to do this cleaning but i'm afraid it comes to the same problem as before Regards.

I've cleaned many of them without having to do an idle relearn. Some do need an idle relearn after cleaning. Can't say which will or won't.
