This old chuck came with my parts lathe. I never looked at it very close because it is oversized for a 10" lathe. Turns out it is kind of unique - a 4 jaw scroll and independent combination chuck. This video is about cleaning it up and showing how it works.

Hi, I love the way you narrate. Only when needed. No speeches, rants or bias. Of course there will probably be a day when...... There is also low noise, just the machines humming. I could watch you all day. The coolest part is that your videos are project based. You are not trying to teach us a lesson just occasionally telling us what you are doing and allowing us to go for the ride. I like that. Some hobbyist YT creators are trying to TEACH the big lesson - Explain everything first, repeat three times - 20 minutes of lecture 2 minutes of machine time. I have a pretty low tolerance for that. I learn and get great ideas from watching people like you very easily. Thank you!

You might consider buying an impact driver. It would have helped out quite a bit with those stubborn bolts.

Impact drivers are surely useful but when a fastener is rusted enough you risk breaking the head, creating more problems. The way he did is the gentle, slow, and in the end the correct one.

That’s pretty cool never seen one with a scroll and independent adjustments, could be very useful

What a cool chuck! Your lathe appears to be about the same as mine (10" Logan 850) and I much prefer my new, bulky 6" Shars chuck (almost as deep as this one of yours, but not quite) over either of the original chucks because that weight can act like a flywheel to keep the spindle moving through difficult cuts, and the jaws are much deeper, giving a better grip on odd parts. I rarely go back to the old one, even though it's my 4 jaw.

I have a four jaw chuck made by the same manufacturer, identical stamping on the jaws. It came with the machine. Vanguard Australian made @ 1930

Interesting chuck, I have not seen one like that before. As to its use I would guess the same as you, for production work probably on a turret lathe

I like that chuck. The best of both worlds. I wonder if you can still buy such a chuck? Good video as well. Always great to see something cleaned up and reused. Thumbs Up!

Hi , Roy here from England .I have a six inch version of this chuck and I can just read the inscription on the front. It says THE D.E. WHITCH MACHINE CO NEW LONDON CONN USA and underneath I can barely read patent ALMC WED I think. Mine is very old and tarnished nevr had it apart will I think machine a backplate and fit it to my Southbend. Thanks for the video.

Neat chuck. Definitely was wincing with those cheese head screws though. I thought they'd just bust or round out. Good job man.

I also have a 4 Jaw combo chuck that came with an antique Sheldon lathe that I bought several years ago. The chuck appears to be about the same vintage as the lathe ( 1880’s ). It design is a bit different than yours.

Cool chuck, South Bend used part numbers that started with CL and the like. Did you solve the mystery yet?

A viewer sent me this link; books.google.com/books?id=oxwxAQAAMAAJ&lpg=PA18&ots=Nlqb2Xu6GB&dq=dew%20co%20lathe%20chuck&pg=PA48#v=onepage&q=dew%20co%20lathe%20chuck&f=false D. E. Whiton chucks. This article talks about combo chucks like mine and says the jaws were all stamped "D.E.W. Co." to avoid confusion when reordering new ones. D. E. Whiton Machine Co was around from 1865 to 1960's. Pretty cool

Buck makes a chuck just like that one. I saw them in the grizzly catalog, they’re quite expensive too. I like your videos by the way, some of my favorites. How old are you?

Hello, very good video. I was wondering if you knew what size spindle thread this chuck has. I have an 11 inch South Bend lathe, which is the "red headed step child" of the South Bend line, with the odd ball spindle thread size of 1 5/8 X 8. If this chuck is this size, and you decide you're not going to use it, I would be very interested in talking to you about a swap or purchase.

Thanks for watching! The backing plate for this chuck has a 1 3/4" thread diameter. Either 6 or 8 TPI I can't remember

Cleophus A I have an 11 inch South Bend lathe also so I feel your pain. You may have already figured this out but if you find a chuck with the ever so common 1 1/2” 8tpi you can set it up in your lathe to chase the threads on the back plate and cut the threads to 1 5/8” pretty easily.
