Top tip. If you live in a hard water area try using distilled water instead of tap water. This eliminates the risk of leaving a tiny film of dissolved inorganic calcium salts on the components found in hard water. Also use the same for rinsing off after cleaning. Distilled water can be expensive so I have a dehumidifier in my workshop to keep the humidity down to a safe level at aroun 45/ 50% . This way I also collect as much distilled water as I need. I also add a few drops of rinse agent, the sort you add to a dishwasher, the cheapest brand will do. This helps prevent water beading and thus aids drying. Oh, and never ever put your fingers in the ultrasonic whilst it's working, it'll cook your fingers no prizes for guessing how I found that one out.

That's why I use KZfaq premium. Only $9 a month. I don't see any adds ever but the channel still gets the credit for me viewing the video as if I watched the ad. It's work the $9 to me because I watch so much youtube and you can also download videos to watch back later without service and my kids use that feature for videos right before bed when camping.

I used a ultra sonic cleaner for many years but eventually purchased a dedicated watch cleaning machine. The difference is remarkable in terms of cleanliness and ease of the cleaning process. The pearl retails at approx £500 and in my opinion is worth every penny. PS I still use the ultra sonic for clock parts.

When my dad died, he left me a 1976 Seiko Turtle with a 6309 movement that didn't work. I wanted a working keepsake but didn't know what to do. That was just over a year ago and I've somehow found myself a graduate of Mark Lovick's watchmaking lessons and a collector of sorts, of 6309 movements. You can imagine how excited I was to find this video. I'd begun to feel I was the only person in the world trying to save a dinosaur, non-hacking, non-winding vestige of Seiko history. Wanted to get my passed Grandpa's old 6119C square Seiko serviced. Was quoted quite a substantial amount, so instead bought the tools for half the price and stumbled upon your channel. Gotta thank you for the time you've taken and the vids you've made that have given me the confidence to have a crack myself. I certainly am going to try your US methods. Interesting and thorough quick course. I would think, considering the cost of the cleaning solution for the watch cleaning machine, that you might want to strain them through a dense flexible cloth or other similar material, therefore keeping the cleaner but tossing the trash. Maybe even a chamois cloth. Just a thought that might save a few (or more) bucks.

Great video, and very interesting to se how you clean the watch parts. I don't have a watch cleaning machine like you, so I use an ultrasonic cleaner, and it works great too. Looking foreward to se the assembly of the watch.

I found your channel because I wanted to learn servicing watches (I thought it's a good place to start), but the more I watch your videos, the harder it seems. There is more to learn than I thought :(

It can seem overwhelming but its not. Start slowly with some basic tools and take loads of photos of the movement as you take each part off and that way you have a record of how it call goes back. Its only on when you have done one that you realise its not so difficult. However thats when you want to get better, more tools and then cleaning / timing becomes important to you. its a gradual thing. I have only been doing this for around 2.1/2 years although I have got a bit obsessed.

I've got a huge can of fast panel wipe and wondered if that is any good for putting in a ultrasonic as it says on the paperwork its good for degreasing especially instruments and dials as I use it for spray painting in between layers and is good stuff. Fills my daughters lighters a treat too hehe

I used for ultrasonic: Case - vinegar and hot water or fairy, Balance - medical gasoline, Other parts: alcohol 90%.

I basically use this exact process with the exception of using a different brand sonic cleaner. That's it, and everytime I wash all of the high torque (steel) parts like the canon pinion they come out rusted. I don't know why. I'll pull them out of the alcohol stage and place them in a mason jar with a heat gun to dry, to which they'll come out looking fine but after 3 hours there's always a layer of surface rust over all of them and I have to bust out the scratch brush to remove it. Interestingly, after I remove the rust with a scratch brush and wash it in alcohol (making it look good again) the rust comes back in another 3 hours. I'll also add that no other watch part does this, either on different watches, or on new parts I order, just on the ones I wash using the Naptha+Distilled Rinse+Cleaner+Distilled Rinse+Alcohol+Dry process. It's driving me insane.

I use white vinegar,a touch of degreaser I give a couple sprays of deGreaser,Rubbing Alcohol alcohol,and a part of ammonia. To run in the ultrasonic cleaner

Could I ask for advice on ultrasonic washing, because Cousins does not send liquids like Renata and similar to Ireland, I have liquid Elma 1:9,IPA 99.9,ligher fluid,in what order should the parts be washed and then rinsed safely so that they do not rust, etc..? hope I'm not asking too much, thank you very much...

Hi Mike. EXCELLENT stuff again. I am watching this series with interest (if you pardon the pun!). I have about a million (small exaggeration) Omega 1022 movements all with subtly different problems. Test yourself, try an Omega 1022 movement and make it work repeatable. When you find out how, please tell me!! Cheers pal.

The smaller the movement the challenge becomes more interesting . Bigger magnification mainly. I have done a ladies Seiko 2### series and those things are smaller than a penny.

Very interesting and informative. Out of curiosity how did you learn how to restore (assemble/disassemble) watches. I work on very fine stuff in electronics design work (0.002" tolerances) and enjoy the fine movement skills under my microscope. Did you take classes or just wing it ? I'm reluctant to try a rebuild of some old pocket watches I have and would someday like to restore them (with the proper knowledge on how to do this).

Thanks. My understanding is the Seiko 6309 shock jewels are the same size so I have washed them together. I guess if we have problems in regulating then that will be the cause. I have done this before on a 6 series without a problem.

I'm rebuilding a Seiko 7009A and find that some parts are slightly magnetised. I think I have seen something blue on your bench which might be a demagnetiser from Amazon at anything from £8 to £15. Does it work? Keep up the great videos which I dip in and out of for specific info. Thank you.

Mike, that was actually fascinating. It's tempting to scrape some of it, but I know the damage that would do. I am a bit curious as to why you didn't do the dial? Wouldn't it have been relatively safe to at least put it in the ultrasonic cleaner? At any rate, I'm really enjoying your videos! Many thanks.

Dials are often lacquered and the decals are transfers so you run the risk of removing them. My only cleaning method for a dial is rodico and on occasion a Q tip with saliva. As its the dial we look at the most I do not want to risk ruining this one.

Nice video! So I have just one question. Will you make a video how to oil the watch? there are not many videos that can sharpen everything so sharply. Thats now the only thing I’m missing. In the future I want to purchase a vintage not running Seiko and try to get it back running my self! your videos have inspired me to finally take the step to try it my self!

There is an easier way of cleaning the balance than doing it separately. Mount the balance assembly in its place on the main plate and after doing so remove its diashock jewels. You can then throw the main plate with the mounted balance in with the rest of the parts for cleaning. Much safer than fiddling with the balance on its own and it will get a better clean. That's how I do it anyway.

We have not machines in my country therefore we use only the solvant oil or you can say clear white and pure gasoline for service watch machines only and a hand brush. May you advised any other components or detergents in reply for cleaning watch machines.

I'm looking for a ratchet ring for a Seiko turtle 6309-7049, vintage 1984. I'd be open to moding it, or just fixing it. Biggest thing is finding the ring. I own more expensive watches, but the wife bought it our 1st Christmas, so it's a sentimental thing. I'd just like it complete in so form. Thanks, I'll be watching. No pun intended.

Have you ever tried polishing the inside of the barrel to remove / reduce the scouring of the mainspring?

No, that would be really hard to get in there and removing any material could take it out or round. Dont forget that spring is under one hell of allot of tension inside the barrel on a full wind.

Hi there, love your videos and you've certainly inspired me to have a go, anything, you wanted a few more comments so here's mine, I'd like to see a video that gives a bit of guidance on applying oil to a watch movement as there don't appear to be much info out there about this. A bit of a guide as to where to apply oil, how to apply oil, what type of oil to apply, grease or oil, mineral or synthetic, what viscosity, etc, etc.

Thanks. Oiling is very subjective and I am not a pro by any means however I will be showing as much of the oiling here as I can so will talk you though this on the rebuild video. If you look at some of my more recent build videos I show oiling in those eg 7s26 series

And yes, I do find the videos interesting, especially since you have a few regarding subjects,such as oiling, approached in a novel way. Hi Mike! You are the Seiko guru, can you tell me how the indices on a 7009 are fitted plz? Are they glued or just a friction fit? Just dropped my favourite and dislodged two markers.

I can’t answer that dials can be different for each watch. Generally Seiko are friction fit on two pins.

Apart from the corrosion to the defunct pallet fork, the jewels seem to held with too much shellac which would surly detract from performance.

possibly yes. I have actually seen first hand too much shellac interfering with the motion of a pallet .

How did your manage to put the ultrasonic on 50C with so little water? I did something similar at 30C and the machine started smoking. I don't know if there wasn't enough water to soak up the great generated from the ultrasonic waves, or if the wire insulation was burning up. But everyone i turn on the heating element i smell a burning smell.

Never had any problems with heating with 50mm + of water. My cleaner is only 2L

I hope and am sure this old gal will tick again! I have a bit of a thing for the 70,s at the moment. Just a question ,did those tweezers also magnatise the escape wheel. I think way too much? I fabricate and fix most things to my wife's dismay because I can but these tiny machines are too much for my fumbling digits and eyes that need glasses just to see and type this! I hate buying new when old can be kept going.Cheers.

Do you know how to change bezel insert for omega 200 pre bond watch?

Sorry not really. On Seikos you remove the bezel and heat with say a hairdryer as they are glued in position so the heat softens enough to remove. Then you buy these bezel adhesive disc things to then stick down the new one. Cant say Omega do the same though but I would assume so.
