Do not use your kitchenaid mixer as a meat grinder.
How to clean your mixer.
I now realize that I made a few mistakes when I initially used the grinder which may have prevented this problem. HOWEVER, I still would not recommend using it. Buy a quality, dedicated meat grinder. They are well worth the money.

UPDATE about the video. I've learned a lot from the comments. Thank you to everyone who has commented. In hindsight, it is obvious that I made mistakes as I was a novice to grinding meat myself. I speak from my own experiences. Other people have experiences different from my own. I did freeze the meat first, but after reading some of the comments, I don't think I froze it good enough. Yes I bought a non KitchenAid grinder, but it wasnt exactly cheap, and I didn't like the way the KitchenAid one looked and felt I really wanted one which was stainless steel, so I got this GVODE. Lesson learned. There was not a o-ring, gasket, or absorbent disk with the grinder or mixer. I had no reason to think one may have been needed or included. Last, after making this video I bought a dedicated, quality meat grinder. It works MUCH better. I ground up an entire cow with it. I'll do a video on it sometime.

You made one huge mistake and resulting you are blaming the wrong unit. The mistake you made is buying some cheap - I don't know brand - to attach to your kitchenaid. I got almost all attachment for the kitchenaid and every single one is awesome. Way to expensive expensive but awesome. The grinder of kitchenaid goes for 165,- (euro) in Europe. Expensive. But on the other hand, all accessories are massive, strong, well build. Anyways. It is not the mixer. That one those not have to be sealed ipx at the accessories axis. The accessories have to sealed. Buy original...

Thanks for the edit/update. Nice to see someone admit there were things that could have been done differently. I've gotten MANY more things wrong than right in my 57 years, lol. I have the same mixer with the Kitchenaide grinder. I've used it to grind up 2-3 deer with pork, turkey, beef fat, etc., and I've yet to have a problem. But it's definitely something to keep in mind. I use a high speed setting and try to have my meat semi-frozen. I do agree that a dedicated grinder might be best. I had one, but it finally gave out, so now the Kitchenaide is all I use.

There is a O-ring seal in the Gvode drive shaft that inserts into the square drive of the Kitchenaid mixer. That's the only route fluids could get into the mixer head. If the O-ring is missing or you have a crack in the housing that bypasses the seal you will have problems. I have used the fruit strainer for de-seeding raspberries to make jam. It has an extention worm feeder that attaches to the same drive shaft to turn the worm feeder as the meat grinder and I checked, no juice leaking into the mixer head. It has to be your device. Using excessive pressure to force food into a narrow device can cause food and fluids to leak around a seal. You have to cut up the meat in small enough pieces to self-feed through the worm drive. The "pusher" is only a safety feature to move the food down the vertical feed so the worm drive can catch it and to push the last little bits that dont have the weight of food above it to push it through. Most of the meat grinding process I don't do any pushing but just plop pieces down into the feed. The point is to let the mechanical process do the work. The knives and grind plate and the worm feeder.

The reason why the meat that you grind is semi frozen is it results in a better mince and no juices from the meat can seep back into the mixer head.

A property machined joint where the shaft leaves the grinder housing won’t leak. It’s not the mixer, it’s the Gvode grinder 4:13 (inferior product) I can’t say the a quality part won’t leak, but it will be minimal, there’s probably an absorbent disk at the joint, maybe even a plastic disc to further prevent such an event. Some of it could have been the grinding speed as if you go back and you read the comments you'll see that a lot of people are saying it's the grinding speed allowing it to back up cuz you're supposed to use four or five and he said he used two. You're also supposed to have the meet pretty chill so that it's not so liquidy but the fact is it's worm gear so there is going to be a certain speed in which it can continue to push things out as opposed to letting them back up and there is a seal in there

When I got it, it felt so cheap and terrible. One of the shredding wheels had a spike of metal that punctured my finger. Had I used it, it would have broken off into my food. I posted my 1 star review on Amazon along with pictures of the dangerous product. The company offered to give me a gift card if I delete the review. Screw that! I make sausages for my family and have to grind like 20-30 lb of meat. I bought COFUN meat grinder because the KA original, plastic one cracked. I had no problems with any liquid getting inside; it actually will spew towards me, so I had to wear a good apron. That extensive usage actually wore off the gears in the mixer. I was about to run to the store to buy another mixer, presuming that the repair will cost me as much as a new one. I was told by my acquaintance that her husband had fixed their KA with a purchased on KA parts site. It cost me about $80 with new gear set and grease with free labor of my son. KA is good to grind a few pounds, but for higher volume, it is better to buy a commercial grinder. I took me hours to grind 40 pounds of meat with my arms up pushing meat on KA.I could not use KA to stuff sausage casing, so I bout a staffing syringe and only regret I have, that had not done it sooner,

The question I have if the author used the plastic nut or whatever itss called that is aupposed to seal the grinder from the machine. I actually bought the original KitchenAid metal grinder attachment and am hugely disappointed. After the first wash the grinder and all its part turned dark grey and as someone is saying this is a sign of "leaking lead". Not sure if this is true, but it is extremely nasty and unpleasant. So I am in fact looking for a stainless steel version of this attachment, and sadly KA does not make them. Only some noname Chinese products like the GVODE you used in this video are available on Amazon. Seeing your video made me pause for a sec but then I noticed there are quite a few video reviews of this chinese product on KZfaq and you are the only one reporting this problem. @@DGHamblin That might be the culprit. Shortly after posting my question I decided to bite the bullet. I bought the same Gvode as yours. It did come with the plastic washer attached to the rear end of the auger. The main body, auger, and the knives are indeed made from stainless steel, while other parts are made from some other alloy. All in all, while not a perfect match to my stand mixer, for the money it is a good product. And no, it does not leek meet juices into the mixer body. I would prefer it have somewhat larger diameter body to process more meet. Other than that not much to complain about. If i did not slready have a stand mixer, I would probably go for a standalone meet grinder, but for low volume grinding this attachment does the trick. And it is easy to clean.

@@HungLikeScratit’s aluminum. They are very opaque on their website saying « metal » or « die cast metal » but it’s aluminum. The fact that they’re hiding it is illegal where I live.

I am surprised to see i have all original KA equipment, but mine did the same thing as in this video, blood was all over inside. I tried the second time and it did that again. What am I doing wrong ? any suggestions ?

I can understand what you're saying happened but I have used mine to grind my venison MANY times and have NEVER had any issues like this. I do chill my meat before I grind which may be the difference so that might be something for people to consider if doing this. I LOVE mine!

I think the problem was more the aftermarket grinder. Even though I did my best to buy a quality grinder, it didn't work out so well. I didn't want to get the one from KitchenAid because I didn't like how it was made, but perhaps I should have done so anyway.

@@DGHamblin Don't you just hate hindsight? Unfortunately after market parts can be hit or miss, sounds like yours was a miss. Mine is a kitchen aid grinder so maybe the quality was better cause it's done well, however, I still think that even if I ran meat through there warm, there would be a lot more blood that may leak into that inside area, I just know I'm thankful for chilling it to begin with and not going through that pain in the ass. After seeing your video I'll make sure I always chill the meat! I always try to learn from others mistake before I make them! Lol

I bought 6.9 liter brand new one here in India and it was rusting under the mixer interior.

I'm willing to bet it's because you used a knock-off and you didn't even use it correctly. You didn't pre-chill the meat and the grinder.

I tried to, but being a novice I may not have frozen the meat enough or some other thing. Thank you for the advice!!

OMG What a nasty experience but do you think that maybe if you would have used the original grinder made for the kitchen aid this would not have happened?

Maybe. I ended up buying a dedicated quality meat grinder. It works like a champ!

No. Buy actual KA brand and, unlike this guy, use it properly.

Correct me if I'm mistaken here but when grinding meat, it doesn't go inside the mixer itself. It only touches the grinder itself.

Had a kitchen aid for 40 years. Use more as a grinder as a mixer. Wore out 2 grinders. Never thos issue......you said the kitchen aid brand was "prohibitively expensive "?? WTF? THEYRE LESS THAN 40 BUCKS

Was your plastic or stainless? I didn't want plastic. I spent a lot more than $40 for the grinder I had, and it was a fraction of the cost for a stainless from KA
