Explain? Because what I saw as a USMNT fan he put together a brilliant game plan vs England, where we were clearly the better team and should have won it had not Pulisic hit the bar and McKennie missed a glorious one timer. Gave up a fluke penalty vs Wales in the dying moments after winning, and yes the Iran game should have been easier but no WC game is easy. The Netherlands game could have and should habe gone differently if again Pulisic scores in the opening minutes one v one with the keeper, and fatigue clearly set in the second half of that game considering the depth in subs was nowhere near what it is now. So, how was Greg in over his head at the WC with those things considered, but more importantly with the youngest team at the tourney?

@ronniethomas8780 In fairness to Berhalter, he accomplished all the goals he was supposed to. Win everything in CONCACAF, qualify for the WC, and make it out of the group stages. With that said, his selections and tactics were exposed when he went up against better coaches. He selected only 3 forwards for a 26-man roster. None of who were outright center forwards. He showed a complete inability to manage the Gio situation and allowed it to become personal and an issue. He then allowed it to affect how he played and instead of starting Gio and Aaronson, who could have provided pace against the Netherlands. He instead played a 3 man midfield against their 5 man midfield and got out manned and out-paced as their midfield controlled the game. The US actually had better possession than the Netherlands, but that was because after scoring two goals, the Netherlands were happy to just sit back and ride the game out. Berhalter is a decent MLS manager, but even in MLS, his inability to adjust tactics was found out. You can't tell me that after Berhalter was removed as coach, the US conducted an exhaustive search and came back around to Berhalter as the best candidate. That's not even going into the Wales game.

@@FrankieBlueEyes while you make some good points, the reality is the depth of the pool wasnt was then what it is now, so I don't know who else you think Greg should have brought to the WC that would have changed the circumstances more than what they were. The Gio situation was made by Gio, and Greg probably should have just sent him home, or maybe not even had taken him considering he wasn't fully fit because of injuries! Greg could have handled it better once the tourney was over, but in Qatar, he handled it great, and that came from the mouths of the players! We can talk about tactics and what should have been done, because hindsight is undefeated, but the reality is the players could have been also better in certain moments, something ironically you failed to call out for some reason, and Greg was a novice manager at that level coupled with the team also being really young, so taking all of those things into account I think we should be happy with how things turned out in the first cycle under Greg coaching this young team! I don't think there is too much shame to be had getting out managed by the likes of Guus Hidink to be fair, and as I mentioned thigs could have went differently if Pulisic had scored that early goal that he has to put away at that level

@ronniethomas8780 all fair points, I think, leaving out Ricardo Pepi, a true CF was a mistake as we didn't have anyone who was used to having his back to goal and being a target man. Also, not only was his handling of the Gio situation bad, his initial decision to not make him a big part of the team is still very puzzling. Something that was pointed out at the time by pundits and former players. We will just have to agree to disagree on Berhalter. The word after the WC was that he wanted to manage in Europe again. After the WC, it became pretty clear he would be out of his depth managing in any of the top leagues, and apparently, no offers came in.

@FrankieBlueEyes bro, his initial decision to not make Gio a big part of the team was bc Gio hadn't played many minutes leading up to the WC, he was injured for a few months and was actually lucky to even be called in to go to Qatar. So you'd rather be mad at Greg for not initially playing an out of form player, that maybe shouldn't have been there, as opposed to criticizing a professional players reactions and behavior bc they didn't get news that they didn't like? I agree that in the aftermath Greg shouldn't have brought it up, albeit anonymously, but come on we can't put everything on Greg, that's silly! And, I do think Greg had options abroad after Qatar, but I think, and I'm sure this was said by Greg, but he wanted to finish what he started with the group for another cycle. The players wanted him back, thats enough for me atm, and this summer will tell us a lot about whether Greg has learned anything

If that's your feeling, you're not a US fan in my opinion! That's the weakest mentality there is in fandom, this idea that because you don't like a coach you'd resort to rooting for the team he's coaching to lose.....does that even make sense to you when think about.....just wow

Berhalter is his former teammate and he is more than qualified to speak on the subject - being critical of him as a coach isn't a bias.

@@NoCoastRaps Jimmy Conrad wasn't a close teammate of Gregg Berhalter. They were both center backs and competed for playing time on the USMNT. Conrad said on his previous podcast (In Soccer We Trust) that he and Berhalter had a purely professional relationship and that Berhalter wasn't someone that he would spend time with outside of work.
