I saw CLEAVERS, and I screamed! Seriously, it doesn't grow on our hilltop homestead very well, but down in town where our apothecary and office is located, I've discovered a TON! It's our first spring in the new cottage apothecary in town, and I'm delighting in foraging a new place. Find out the benefits and uses of this wonder weed, a medicinal and nutritional herb to know...And find out how to make Cleavers Vinegar. Galium aparine is an incredible herb to forage, eat, and preserve for medicine. #herbalist #herbalism #cleavers #foraging #homestead #plantmedicine

For a salad dressing, do you mix olive oil or anything else with the vinegar? I love that many of the herbs (weeds) found in the spring have tons of minerals and health benefits. What are some other spring herbs good for salad dressings?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 ай бұрын
Other spring herbs high in nutrition are chickweed, dandelion leaf, dead nettle, henbit, and some others. It's pretty interesting that the first plants up every year strengthen our bodies!

Im so glad you shared this information. Behind my fence is a ton of cleavers growing. I never knew anything about it. I live in Texas. So mine have already flowered. But next year I will make a vinegar recipe for sure. This information is very helpful.

Have you tried using corn silk? That is my go to for UTI issues. Corn silk tea and high vitamin C intake. Now im going to add in the cleavers😊
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 ай бұрын
I agree with Umpquagirl! Corn silk is definitely helpful for UTI. And I've been known to take massive amounts of cranberry tablets (do NOT drink the juice---the bacteria actually like the sugar). The cranberry keeps the bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. I use wood sorrel. It works better than antibiotics. It's high in oxalates, so I don't overuse it - but I find that a cup a day of wood sorrel tea for about 3 days knocks a UTI right out.

Thank you Heidi. I will be looking for this wonderful herb this week. I just got done harvesting willow bark and drying it. Do you dry willow bark before using it as an infused oil? Do you dry willow bark before using it as a tincture? When using these cleavers in a salad, do you use the very young cleavers? Namaste dear Heidi.
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 ай бұрын
Yes, I dry the willow first. And I just use all the cleavers, LOL. The younger leaves are more tender, though.

Hi Heidi. Thank you for all of the great information. Since the alcohol may not allow the release of minerals out, will dried cleavers made into a hot tea allow the minerals out? My concern is if/when you don’t have access to fresh, hopefully the tea will give you the goodness. Thank you.
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 ай бұрын
Yes, the water will help draw out the minerals. :-)

Thank you. If dried and used as a tea, will it still help with kidney problems, or swelling in the body ? Lastly, to be effective, does the plant have to be harvested and used before it goes to seed?

Hi Heidi. I just found your channel. I grow my own herbs and have been trying to learn as much as I can about using them. I recently learned that when using herbs to infuse oil that to prevent botulism the herb should be soaked in citric acid first. Does the vinegar act as the acid to make the vinegar safe to consume in a salad dressing?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas Ай бұрын
Hmmm...Well, I've never heard of this, and I'm assuming you're speaking of the fresh herb? I'm not a fan of infusing fresh herbs in oil with the exception of St. John's wort. Otherwise, I make sure my herbs are freshly and completely dried.

I was wondering about infusing cleavers in a carrier oil to make a salve? Is this something that you can use cleavers for? If so, do you let them dry wilt first? 😊 Thanks.

If you're talking about the process the Swiss use --- cleavers as a filter, then yes, some of the plant benefits will end up in the milk. But really it's just a great plant to act as a filter.
