Morning David. Thanks for the video. For me it was a combination of the shape and diameter of the stem, just before the bit, on the p-lip that was the issue. I concur, saddle-stems have been the most successful for me to clench, though I still have much to learn.

LOL , perhaps you misunderstood. Set it, smoke it and forget it . The more one thinks about clenching the more one will have issues. To me it is natural as the natural briar of the bowl itself. Clenching must be second nature or the smoker will continue to think about clenching and fuss about it not letting the clenching becoming an extension of the experience.

I do have a couple of question for you, I'm fine when I'm smoking my pipe and clenching, if I'm sitting it's great, but if I have to get up and do something I have issues with stability. Any tips for that? Also, I looked and couldn't find if you made a video on cadence. From one old codger to another, thanks agan.

Thanks for the advice! New pipe smoker here but instantly fell in love. My two biggest issues are clenching and getting g the tobacco to burn evenly. Speaking of which, do people mix the bowl around at all? Or just keep tamping and tamping? Does anyone smoke half a bowl and leave the rest for later? Sorry for all the questions and thank you! Great stuff man, subscribed!
@StDavidpipes3 ай бұрын
First of all thanks for the sub! How did you find the channel? Curious! As a new pipe man I would not worry about clenching. It takes time and practice. Please , don’t mix the tobacco in the bowl once it’s packed. Pack light, tamp gently and “sip “ the smoke. No heavy puffing. The tobacco will taste better and you won’t get tounge bite. Feel free to email me if so inclined with further questions. Just put YTPC or something recognizable in the title. Thanks again!! Yes you can smoke a bit and grab it later. Nothing wrong with that. It’s actually called delayed gratification. My email is in the about section .

I aso prefer saddle bits. I also use silicone tips for metal straws on my clay pipes so I can clench those. I dont like the softy bits causes my jaw to sit in an uncomfortable way. Any recommendations on a product that is thinner? Also what is your resting routine for your briars? I have a dozen or so nice briar pipes but they don't see much action because I really can't get more than 2-3 bowls before needing to rest them a few days. Which in turn has caused me to shift towards meerschaum pipes. I like to travel minimal so the idea of keeping up with 2-3 briar pipes while out is not something I want to do. I tend to average 5-6 bowls per day. Honestly if I could smoke freely through my house and not just in the study area it would probably get lit at breakfast and be burning till bed.

What is it with the P-lip that makes it harder to clench? Me, I'm just fresh into the game (two weeks in), but I have four fishtails and one P-lip. The way I clench them, I can perceive no difference on account of the mouthpiece shape - but then I still do not find it comfortable to clench any of them. I worry about clenching too hard, as I don't want to damage the stems, so maybe I'm not clenching as hard as I should.
@StDavidpipes2 ай бұрын
Hi there and welcome to pipe smoking. I don’t like P-lip at all. Tried one and hated it. Don’t over think clenching. It’s not for everyone. There are life long pipe smokers who do not clench for various reasons. If you’re worried about damaging the pipes by clenching then clenching isn’t for you. You will damage the stems with chatter (teeth marks). That does not concern me as I’m a die hard clencher . You can purchase Softie Bits r . That is the brand name of rubber bits you may place on the stem . It will protect from chatter. Purchase online at the pipe retailers. Thanks for watching.
