I'd go paladin 6 and cleric rest of the way. Be a Smiting Paladin while upcasting Spirit Guardians. Sounds good to me.

There is a easy way to make a Cleric/Paladin multiclass work. Start off level 1 as a Divine Soul Sorcerer. This is thematically fitting and gives us many good things. We gain: Booming Blade, Green Flame Blade. Two of the three: Absorb Elements, Feather Fall, Shield. You also gain Favored by the Gods for a defensive buff, and we gain proficiency in Constitution Saving throws to help with concentration checks for maintaining concentration. Level 2, and Level 3 we go Paladin and pick up the Defensive fighting style along with Divine Smite. Levels 4-20 we go any cleric that gives us heavy armor proficiency. From here the build is ready, and the build really begins to shine at around level 8 once you get to pick up Aura of Vitality (Using the optional class features), and Spiritual Guardians. All of the above classes are casters so we continue to gain spell slot progression. This build gives us more spell slots than if we went straight Paladin with the ability to use divine smite, great defensive options from the Divine Soul Sorcerer, and the usual awesome features from the cleric class. Here is a link to a D&D Beyond build for anyone who is interested in an example build. ddb.ac/characters/72428471/zwKEP1

I mean...I just take 2 levels in paladin for smite, put my other levels in cleric and only worry about wisdom and cleric spells for my spellcasting.

That was my thought. Imagine having Spirit Guardian up and then stepping in with a good armor class to do Smite damage on top of that

I generally agree that this is a wholly unnecessary path, but the concept demands ;) Since we are not heading for the paladin capstone anyway, there are a couple of very front-loaded clerics that can lend some useful reaction and bonus action options to a paladin. The order domain allowing you to proc reaction attacks from your allies when you target them with spells combined with bonus action spells like healing word and shield of faith on top of your regular Attack action is pretty neat. There is no use limit to that apart from spell slots, so you'll need to weigh your allies attacks higher than your 1st level smites, but if you have a rogue in the party, that'll rack up damage quickly. Tempest and Light, while limited in uses by your Wisdom mod per long rest, can deal damage or impose disadvantage on enemies hitting/attacking you. Light also gives Faerie Fire as a domain spell, and with something like an Amulet of the Devout to boost your save DC to compensate for the mediocre wisdom, that can work wonders against low-dexterity enemies. The peace domain, as you covered in the episode on that subclass, is also an extremely powerful dip because the uses of your concentration- and slot-free mini-bless is based off your proficiency bonus. It might be an action to activate, but it lasts 10 minutes and so is easy to set up a little ahead of a fight. The value of ritual casting should also not be devalued.

Currently in a campaign running a war domain cleric 3/paladin 1. The only healer of the party. 18 AC flinging guiding bolt and using additional attacks due to domain. Plus Divine sense(found a incapacitated barbed devil recently) and lay on hands(when out of spells) has been helpful for the party. Now would have to decide to either dip in paladin to get smite and fighting style. Or go another level in cleric to get wisdom ASI and spiritual weapon/higher level spells.

Paladin 2 /Cleric 18 is the best combo imo. You can do Paladin 3/Cleric 17 if your Cleric subclass has a weak channel divinity. I been playing with these ideas, and those two are the only ones that feel worth it. I find Cleric 15/Hexblade Warlock 5 to actually be better if you're aiming for Xtra Attack because then you can at least dump STR.

You would think for so much flavor overlap there'd be more mechanical. But I agree in 5 levels of hexblade warlock being better

@@MonstersMulticlass i have a suspicion that since the general consensus is Clerics and Paladins are super strong, WOTC felt they would be too strong if they meshed too well together (i.e. if they were both WIS-based) and compensated it by giving each similar spell lists and features that replace what the class would normally lack. Paladins have Lay on Hands for healing. They now get Cleric cantrips. Clerics can get heavy armor prof and a mini-smite. It feels like they did it on purpose.

Paladin 5 (vengeance) / Cleric 15 (light) Focus your stats into the minimum needed for multiclass, grab at least 16 Str, drop dex to 10, and dump int. Use your spell slots for Smites and Spirit Guardians, grab Warcaster at 4th, then Alert later to improve your initiative (or swap depending on your preferred playstyle), then focus ASI on either Str or Wis. Grab plate armor, a shield, and an Amulet of the Devout to fill the missing Channel Divinity. You now hit hard and are almost impossible to hit.

just pick 2 levels of paladin and the rest of a tempest cleric, pick magic iniciate to get access to booming blade and also pick sentinel. At level 16th you will be a level 14th cleric and 2nd paladin with just one atack, but if you use spirit weapon at the first turn an deliver a booming blade spell you will deal a big damage, at the second turn use spiritual guardians and atack with spiritual weapon as a bonus action. And now for a almost a minute you will deal the demage of spiritual weapon + spiritual guardians + booming blade + your atack + 2d8 thunder of tempest cleric + divine smite, and I recommend to cast spiritual weapon with 4th level spellslot and spiritual guardian at higher levels when necessary. Big damage!!

While initially it may seem to conflict really badly, initially, but I kinda like the idea of 6lvls of peace cleric and 14 lvls of conquest paladin. Peace and conquest may not seem like they mix well, but mechanically peace domain isn't very peaceful to begin with. It actually has quite a few synergies with conquest. A reaction to take someone else damage and punish them with your Armor of Agathys and Spirit Guardians (teleporting and moving isn't the same, so there could be an argument that since it is there turn they take the damage) and you have a very useful out of turn Channel Divinnity for extra movement (to get closer the the BBEG) that also heals your allies. If you want another in for the flavor besides the ''when I've conquered and put everyone under my thumb by crushing the opposition, there will be peace'' archetype you could always go with duality/split personality complex thing. In a way your all about peace, love and friendship, but if they push the wrong buttons your other side comes out and you become all about violence and crushing your enemies and killing them before they do more harm. (see it as an alternative narrative to barbarian/paladin and explaining their divine rage) Edit: also going the opposite of 13 cleric/7 paladin can actually be pretty nice extra attack plus 2 auras can come in very handy, not to mention the smites. 2nd Edit: I almost forgot, but reducing their movement speed to 0 inside your Spirit Guardians is very tasty.

33:45 Honestly? Big agree. There's a lot you can do through flavor and RP to completely change up the feel of a class or character, and that itself holds as much if not more weight than mechanics. The only reason to get multiclassing involved in these cases is when you want a character to actually DO A THING mechanically. And even then, if it can be achieved through less expensive means like a feat or a spell, you should seriously consider doing that instead! Like for the Barbarian wanting to make magic potions, sure you could go Artificer! There's plenty of story reasons you may want to pursue it! Or if you just want the potions you could just take Artificer Initiate or Skilled to get the tool proficiencies to do it. For a Paladin becoming more religious I agree, unless your doing it because you want a character that can do things only Cleric can give you, it would be far better to just rp that! Or idk you want a god to acknowledge you and have it to be weighty and mechanical? Give 'em a magic item, or grant a feat outside of regular progression (or as part of regular progression) like idk Magic Initiate and grab some Cleric cantrips and spells that way! For Cleric dipping into Paladin makes a bit more sense, just cause Paladin is so front loaded with non-spell casting fighty options you may want and it slows your spell progression less than fighter (as well as the ever fun lay on hands). But unless you are just super married to the idea of this always on aura that blesses those around you, and the spells you get just aren't meeting that vision, there's really no reason to go far into it. But again if all you want is that vow and aren't interested in what the mechanics are giving you.... just rp the vow? And fulfilling the vow?? You don't gotta do all this??? I enjoy and encourage taking a level in a class just 'cause for story or character reason (maybe you got close to and learned from a party member or just for the interest like barbarian and potions) even if its objectively not the best choice mechanically because it's better and weighter story wise! Likewise choosing to completely switch tracks part way cause of a big character moment. I think both and many others like it are fun and can work! I just think you should be honest why your doing a thing so you can find the true best option for your character, 'cause sometimes that is just leaving it be mechanically and just roleplaying it out. tldr; For me radical reflavoring is always the way; if you like the flavor of a class and not the mechanics just steal the story for it and slap it on a different class. This works for literally all of them and it's fine actually, the chains that bind you are imaginary. Unless you want to do a mechanical thing that only that class can provide just cut out all of Wizards of the Coasts flavor text and replace it with whatever the fuck you want. Unless its a mechanical rule, you can absolutely just treat it like a suggestion to use or lose as you (and your DM) see fit. I think that idea jumps out here 'cause Paladins and Clerics are so closely related flavor wise in text, crossing that mental gulf is much easier and it really does lay bare that mechanic to flavor relationship. How it's much easier and often times better to just do a thing in flavor and rp, rather than to try and shove in unnecessary mechanics.

Yeah I am a big fan of MCing for the flavor, but this is one I really would just go with Will's suggestions. If you want to RP it, RP it! I dont think you get enough out of the mix that this is worth it.

Well you may run into some issues with stats. But if you have the stats for it, 3 levels into paladin Watcher just for smites and the fighting style isn't terrible. Definitely gives you more melee strength. You'll have to decide if it's worth losing the spell casting from missed cleric levels

OK I actually play this I'm going to give you the character and the environment; I play a twilight cleric in a OotA Campaign with a Rouge(Soulknife), Artificer(Artillerist), Monk(Way of the Shadow), Bard(CoE?), There's not really a tank, So I play the off tank, after we lost some people my characters journey saw him wanting to take on a multi-class dip, to better play the role of tank, as to him that is how he protects and provides respite to his party. So through introspection(Talk with my DM about what he was ok with and what I had in mind). My cleric decided to use and ASI to bump up his CHA to become a Twilight Domain Cleric Lvl 8, then 3-5 levels of Paladin ending in an Oath of Devotion, The god is Selune, for both the cleric and the paladin, the Vow itself is an extension of his protection of his party, "Some of you were born into happiness and wealth, while some of us were born into a life of hell, and some of us were lost and some of us were found, but most of us were beaten bby life to the ground, and maybe I'll never see the day that I win but I'll always have time for a beer and my friends, and if you fuck around with us you'll get you rhead kicked in!" After that he's a more on brand tank he can hit with 1d8 from the weapon plus 1d8 radiant from cleric then 5d8 radiant from smite. and he casts like a warlock, all the lower level spells are reserved for smite anb the spells are all up cast. Is it min/max? is it optimized? NOPE it's a niche situation that requires a Niche solution and this is mine, I enjoy this a lot though because the only oath and bond I actually can't break is my devotion to my party, and that was always a part of the character.

Has anyone shot for action surge paladin? Did y’all have fun? Looking to be built by lv 15 Intent: my party has a fighter and barbarian, I’m looking to augment and support my front line. I’m hoping to be able to capitalize on bonus actions and reactions to maximize the benefit to the team and myself. Aura protections mean later on people are going to cling to me anyway right? I plan on casting buffs but I want them to hold strong when I do use slots for those. This is what I’m looking at. Dragonborn Action Surge Shield Caster Paladin gets a fighting style: Protection- shield required- impose disadvantage on an enemies attack roll in 5ft as a reaction Lv 4- feat war caster - advantage on holding concentration for spells -can cast spells with shield in hand so long as all other requirements are met -other features but these two are the main focus^ Lv8 feat shield master- when you attack you can use your bonus action to shove an opponent within 5ft -other benefits but I’m focusing on this^ Lv 5 paladin Extra attack- attack twice when you take an attack action Lv 9 nothing- start multiclass to fighter Fighter gets a fighting style: Dueling- +2 bonus to damage rolls when wielding a weapon one handed. Shield in off hand is acceptable Lv 13 nothing - second level multiclass to fighter Fighter gets second wind and action surge Second wind-recover 1d10 as a bonus action once a rest. Free health for a bonus action Action surge- y’all know this. Take another action once a rest. Action surge extra attack combo yields 4 attacks + whatever divine smites 2 attacks + 1 breath weapon (side campaign goal is to grapple Someone and breath weapon their face off) What do y’all think?

I actually played as an Aasamir Fighter/Paladin. I went battle master. It was fantastic! My playstyle was a little different but actions surge came in handy MANY MANY times. I ended at 14 but went 1-8 Pally 9-11 Fighter 12-14 pally. Your plan looks good to me! You'll be helpful to your party instead of what I did which was basically just focusing on damage with GWM.
