Nice! I like how falling fiery debris pops a hole in the hose line and that hole helps extinguish the fire. LOL. love it.

right around 5:45 looks like a piece of the house towards the roof came down and puntchured the Red hose line, dont know if that caused the hose to loose complete pressure or not.....but actually looks like that was a good thing did some good work on the fire coming out the side windows......

This was a great opportunity for a transitional attack. Hit it quick from the driveway before it crawls all the way up the outside like it did, and then advance inside and finish the hit. They could have maybe even stopped it enough on the outside before it burned through the power lines. It was ballsy advancing in right under those arcing power lines though, let alone doing it with an uncharged line. I wonder if that side door would have been an option also? I wasn't there and can only base my opinions off what I watched in the video. But hey, they made a hell of an interior attack. They just did it in a way which was different than what I would have done, and you cant knock them for that. Stay safe!

+JB91710. I can never understand the logic of never combining an interior and exterior attack in most US fires. Clearly jetting water directly deep into the rooms while crews are inside would put them at serious risk of injury, but using a diffused line to prevent cladding burning up to the roof eves and then working on the window frames would be a great help. Once completed, working inwards with diffused water on one room could then be coordinated with the crews working inside, but communication would be important at this stage. It is quite the norm in the UK and has never to my knowledge caused an injury and keeping fire from entering a roof space has probably reduced risk to crews inside. Clearly, if introduced, a lot of training would be required to prevent anyone from jetting water deep into the interior.

The way it has always been done... is for a good reason. We don't go interior to put the fire out. We go interior to search. There was a tenable portion of the building. We go interior with a line to protect the search crew. It just happens that the fire goes out while we are searching. Transitional attacks have their place, but it tends to write off the reason we are there in the first place.

And this is why I have a small kitchen fire extinguisher in the kitchen and those can like extinguishers in every bedroom in the house and a normal size extinguisher in the garage. Also I get my clothes dryer vent cleaned professionally by a guy that I trust every 18 months. If the fire doesn't destroy the house the smoke will, and if the smoke doesn't the water to put the fire out will, and if the water doesn't the fire fighters will by smashing every window out and cutting holes in the roof! Do yourself a favor, just buy extinguishers.

all structures are occupied until confirmed. Interior attack is warranted. white helmet is an idiot. Dont vent without hose lines in place.products of combustion take the path of least resistance. Vent resulted in flashover of room and began direct impingement of power lines.Power lines would not have been a problem if window was not broken. Interior attack good.Smooth bore through the open door would darken down the fire and made proper attack safer

I don't usually criticize other departments. Because I wasn't there but come on guys. Don't bust out another window to add more oxygen when the fire already self ventilated through the kitchen window. Wait until there's some fire suppression before you do that to release the heat and smoke.. secondly attack that at the seat of the fire in the kitchen through the open door and open window before sending people in there. On and all around bad job just a couple minor things that could have made your life easier in the end and why do we bust out so many windows

I would say embarrassment is a bit harsh, because I don't know very many Firefighters (myself included) that would stop their actions because there are power lines over head, especially when you're the first guys that will be in there "getting it done". Even though the wires became involved, its one door or the other, there is no other choice, either the front or side door will still have the members in the path of the wires. It appears like it took an unusually long time to get water on the fire after entering through the front door. Maybe a hall way needed to be navigated? debris? but whatever the reason, the line may have been able to operate sooner if they entered through the other door. Hose lines are going to fail regardless of where they are stretched. The burning debris could have just as easily fallen on the line inside the house.
@hfdff422
@hfdff422 11 жыл бұрын
I do know that we are not going to commit personnel to a well involved structure, with great personal risk to our lives, to simply put out a fire. All fires go out eventually on their own or with defensive measures. I can be sure of that. Our safety has to be first! We enter structures to search, we enter structures to ensure that no one is in there. The building is occupied until we say its not. The fire goes out, everything gets better- you are correct, that is our hope and the way it works.

@truckofficer1583

you cannot push fire. You can push the products of combustion. no matter which direction you enter a structure once you put water on the fire you will create steam which will scatter the products of combustion in all directions. appropriate and timely ventilation can help direct those products away from the hose team. The object is to reduce steam production and reduce injury and steam damage to the interior of the structure. Fog nozzles produce the highest quantity of steam and have the lowest sustained knockdown duration. Smooth bore nozzles produce the lest amount of steam the longest knockdown duration and disturb the thermal balance the least. Shit can fog nozzles for interior attack.

Interesting that you ask.They went interior because that's what has always been done, however this may change as some research is showing that an initial exterior attack may be safer. Notice in the film that when they open the front door, the heat and dark smoke moves towards them? Knocking down the fire from the exterior avoids this hazard. UL and NIST are doing studies I encourage you to check them out, if you're just starting out in the business you may find some changes during your career.

If you watch FDNY tactics, that's pretty much what they do now. They'll hit it a good lick from the outside first then shut down their aerial streams and let their interior guys have a go at it when they get to the fire floor. New York City has a lot of fire fodder to practice with. A lot of those buildings are close to 100 yrs old, dry and balloon constructed.

First off nice job on the interior attack!! By the book push the fire out not further into the house. Amazing the power line didnt fall actually lucky. I personaly would have pulled the red line out of the house once it punctured in the event it would have burst, but it worked. The only other thing I have learned through my years is to rip the storm door completely off, it always seems to trap the hose lines and never stays open even if you slide the lock. All in all great job!!!

Interior attack was definitely appropriate. Premature venting of window at A/D corner not so appropriate, although it didn't have a huge negative impact at this fire. Don't really understand the simultaneous stretching of two hoselines. Especially since there was a 2 1/2 minute lapse from time front door was forced until we saw water on fire. Charged line at door, force door, open line on fire. Not sure why such a long delay at this one.

3:18- please don't do that. 3:47- please don't do that, just yet. Hit the D side from the drive way, cool it down, make entry from the A side door for interior attack, CONTROL THE DOOR as we see what happens to that window on the D side that was opened next to the fire room. Things get worse. Live wires...eek! Again, I wasn't there, but it seems like there's a LOT of reckless behavior in from the initial engine crew.

RE: 3:18 - If you look at the smoke, he window was already compromised. He just pulled the screen. RE: 3:47 - If they would have had that red line [it's charged] in place of the yellow, they could have gone right in. And you're right. You need to have control of the door. RE: Transitional attack on the D side - Yes, that firefighter should have at least hit the exterior to attempt to slow the fire spread into the attic [eaves]. But look at the date of the fire. In 2013 [pre-UL study], the conventional wisdom was still that you would push fire into the un-burned part of the structure if you hit it from the outside. We know better now, and can see why we shouldn't wait. Unfortunately, there are plenty of current videos out there, showing someone waiting for the door while fire blows out the picture window a few feet away.

With fire and arcing power lines showing on the upwind side of the structure, why would you enter the downwind side of the structure directly under the power lines, and run the hoses right under the burning debris falling from the structure? Why not at least rip down the porch railing so the hoses aren't running under the burning debris and the arcing power lines? Why not put out the fire near the door first, and secure your entrance/exit, before extending further into the building?

@Jake, even though the neighbor SWEARS he saw the homeowner leave for work that morning as per usual, how do we know that one of the kids hasn't stayed home from school today (and was cooking French Fries on the stove-top but went back to her room to watch the next Justin Beiber vid on KZfaq!)? While some of the tactics left something to be desired (initial line stretch, premature OV, etc), the STRATEGY of getting a line between the fire and possible occupants was valid, imho.

It is not our hope that the fire goes out. It is our job to make sure it goes out. You are correct that they all go out eventually, but what if there are occupants? Does it improve conditions inside when we put water on fire? Yes, for firefighters and occupants. I find it hard to believe that fire extinguishment is not a high priority for your department. Why commit to an interior attack, bring the line to the seat of the fire and then go defensive? Makes no sense.

learning points from what I can see. 1. Stop smashing windows. For the love of god, please. Unless you plan to immediately flow water through the window, you're making the fire worse. 2. This has transitional attack written all over it. a 3:40 there is a firefighter standing with a hose line in his hand waiting for the others to force the door. A massive amount of fire could have been knocked down by simply doing the obvious and putting water on the fire. overall, fairly frustrating to watch.

I underestand your frustration but pulling them out to teach a lesson at that point would have been very counterproductive. We don't stop fighting fire to start a drill. Enough time had been wasted already. The right thing to do would be to ensure that someone helped out by flaking the line and eliminating kinks. I'm sure there was someone on lawn or in driveway just standing there looking at that mess of hose, not to mention the burning debris falling on the other line prior to it's failing.

I sat here in stunned silence, mouth hanging open, while a ff stood there - with a charged hose line - and waited for the front door to be forced while fire roared a few feet to his right. The interior attack would have been so much easier with the fire initially knocked down from the outside. As for the power lines, good on the guy who shouted the warning; too bad the warning was ignored. Get out from under them! Then, when the lines fell, someone should have been assigned to stand beside them and make sure no one stepped on potentially live wires. I started imagining the attack crew having to bail, running out the door, and getting electrocuted. In the end, glad to see firefighters getting in there and getting after it. It was a gutsy interior attack, just more difficult than it needed to be.

Jay, that FF happened to be a Chief officer. He shouldn't have even been standing there. His job is to lead and direct, not hump hose at the rear of the string. He should have been standing back seeing that a line or two needed to be deployed to the back of the house and entry made there as well. His fire fighting days ended when he stuck that white hat on his head. Granted, I wasn't there and don't know the training and expertise of him or his fire fighters. I can only assume from what I saw was that they are a volunteer department. If not, they sure acted like it.

When I started on the FD in '74, if we were caught with an axe in hand or just breaking glass to break glass, we'd be sitting before the AC before the shift ended. Once we swept the room with a 30 degree fog for half a minute, only then would we start punching out glass if it were still there. Don't know what academies are teaching the probies now days but we put out a lot of fire with one or two lines if hit quickly enough. We weren't able to surround structures with tower ladders or straight sticks. We only had one ladder truck, hardly ever used it. Watching these videos, I"ve noticed that it does seem to take a long time to get water on fires. It comes down to good leadership, training and lots of practice.

I would be perfectly fine if my house catches on fire for the fire department to show up protect the houses on either side and let mine burn to ground. I don't want the insurance company to try and salvage anything. I would just want to start over from scratch. Burn baby burn.

Well if this FD shows up with their best efforts it'll still be a total loss.

I am amazed someone wasnt killed in that fire. Power lines arcing over me ???? ah no big deal. Interior attack line blown ??? ah no problem. Live power lines down over my interior attack line? ah no problem. Terrible lack of control from the top and no safety.

Perhaps you should've used the deck gun it would bring the fire under control faster. The duck gun sprays 3000 gallons of water per minute. The hoses spray 250 to 500 gallons of water per minute

This was certainly not the situation for a deck gun. Also 3000 gpm is silly. Most Engines can only pump 1200 gpm.

No need for deck gun here. Also no engines flow 3000 gpm. Most 1500, 2000 tops.

This is an embarrassment to firefighters... 1 you extended the hose into the house when clearly you are directly under arching power lines. 2 you extended the hose into the house for an interior fire attack when exterior was necessary 3 you extended the hose right by the fire room thus causing burning debris to puncture the attack line and render your attack nearly completely. Now on arrival I would have ordered a primary attack at the window and door where the fire originated knocking down the fire that destroyed your line. this fire could have been stopped much faster than what it was. Thats the story.

Nope. Generally a bad idea. That wouldn't have stopped the power line outside from being live.
