The classic Charlie Hustle who raced to 1st base even on a walk or line drive out. He played the game hard 100% of the time throughout the years. He was a great example for the young learning how to play the game. Pete Rose is a Hall of Famer who is deserving. He's paid the price. He's never been a drunk or an alcoholic. I don't see how defending his betting on his team is a good argument for his case. Betting on your own team to win was still against the baseball rules. Also, unless he bet on his team to win every game they played (and he didn't), then it's quite possible he'd hold back relievers the game before he was going to make a bet or make other moves that would affect the next game because he knew he was betting the next game.

@@supernow8 Tell me more about your baseball days. Did you have a sign in every clubhouse that said " "Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible." And if so, did you ignore those signs, bet on your games, get caught, lie about it for 15 years, then come clean just in time to sell a book, oh and by the way, do it at a time to steal some thunder of from the new HOF inductees? This has nothing to do with spitting, or drinking or having a lot of pre-marital sex. This has to do with jerking with the fabric of the sport. The rules are crystal clear.
